Any knitters or crocheters in our new group? One of the biggest influences the old CLBB had on me was in introducing me to the international (about 6 million users now) crafting site, www.ravelry.com. I joined over there and love it (thanks, CLBB!)--knitting (with a little crocheting) is now a huge part of my creative life, and I have the CLBB to thank for hooking me up with like-minded crafters (since I know so few IRL). The fun part is also that Ravelry, in addition to having hundreds of thousands of patterns (many free) and lots of crafting support, also has myriad boards that operate as the BB did: chat about anything under the sun, not just the stated main purpose of the forum. The "Cooking Light Knitwits" group on Ravelry has long gone quiet, but I was hoping to find some of our members moving over there.

I'm a knitter. PattiAKnits on Ravelry. I mostly use Ravelry for searching for patterns. I'm not even good about posting my finished projects.

I will check it out. Haven't knitted for years as Texas weather doesn't inspire wearing sweaters. I did crochet some kitchen mitts last year to replace old ones. Printed a pattern off a Swedish site. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for posting! Yay; more activity here! The more I knit, the less I cook. My challenge is to do both. And scrapbook--well, at least get my photos caught up in a very basic way. Need more hours in the day (don't we all?).

Ha-ha! I joined the CLBB Ravelry group long ago when I first learned how to knit and purl and was excited about knitting. Then I made a couple of scarves, tried to learn some new techniques and completely failed. I just went to look and see if my account was still there, and there it was!
Some day I will get back to knitting- I did enjoy it, but I think I need to actually take lessons from someone to understand a few things. Right now I'll stick to my sewing machine for my fiber arts.

I joined the Ravelry group when we were knitting to make an afghan for another member going through a second round of chemo. I checked back a couple of times and then forgot about Ravelry until I was looking for a pattern. After my mom passed, I got very sick and needed something fast and easy -- wanted to ake a scarf to go with a top I was gicing my SIL for Christmas. I found the easiest crocheted scarf and made several of them -- and then got back into doing a little here and there.
Mrswaz, there are a lot of videos online. You tube has a lot of knitting videos. Somne are pretty good and some - well, you can always keep looking. Have you heard of Craftsy? They have a lot of knitting and crocheting classes and most go on sale frequently. My sister has done a knitting class or two. I have done a couple of cooking classes and looked at some for advancing my knotting. Once you buyy the class, you can go back and look at it as often a you like for as long as you like. You can ask the instructor questions. The classes I've seen have been good. They mght help you if you don't have someone to teach you -- or even if you do but find you need to keep looking back to make sure of what you are doing.

I think I need to actually take lessons from someone to understand a few things. Knittinghelp.com. BEST THING EVER. That's how I learned. They have tons of videos, & not only are they sorted by subject (so you can pull some oddball term from your knitting pattern, search for that term, & bingo! you've got a video showing you how), but also they are well made. Each video is filmed with a perspective as if you're looking at the work in your own hands, instead of watching a knitter across from you & trying to translate into what each hand should do. I was thinking "forehead cam" but it must be on a mini-tripod; camera doesn't shake. Light yarn on a dark background. No visual or verbal clutter. Probably better in some cases than having someone show you, b/c of that non-mirrored perspective. Give it a shot. I'm delighted to have a hobby that I can keep in the car or take with me into a waiting room--sure beats looking at magazines from the Carter administration. Or People mag; ick. Think about it: football season is coming up . . . never again will you have to just sit there during a game . . .

Ya'll are funny! Videos are nice, but you can't actually ask them questions right there and then.
I do actually have several friends who can teach me in person- one who actually owns a yarn shop and raises llamas to make her own yarn to sell in her shop. So I do have people.
What I don't have is time right now, and I'm okay with that. I do LOVE the idea of having WIPs to take with me- (Dance Mom who spends hours on end sitting in a crowded auditorium waiting for one of my kids to dance!) When I'm home with time (like Sunday football) that's when I have the sewing machine out working on someone's costumes or costume pieces, OR I'm getting something ready for our school week ahead. OR I'm prepping meals and treats for DH to take for his work week on the road.
Someday. In the meantime though, I do a scarf every now and then to keep the motions fresh, and to make something to match my winter coat at the time.

I knit and crochet as well. I'm on Ravelry--it's an awesome site--but have never posted any of my completed projects on it. I usually make afghans, scarfs, or other things that don't need to fit someone, but I recently took a leap and started knitting a sweater for myself Keep your fingers crossed! I agree that on-line videos are the best; I would not have been able to figure out the intricacies of knitting socks without them.

Thank you testkitchen45 for mentioning knittinghelp.com! I know how to knit but I've never used American instructions. There was a glossary for knitting abbreviations. What a great help. Just found out that youngest granddaughter is interested in learning to knit and I have to figure out what words to use. Will be watching some videos and "learn a new language" before we go visit in MO
