What's cooking?
It's supposed to be about a hundred degrees this weekend, and I haven't got a clue.
I've been ogling a Neapolitan ice cream cake at the market (chocolate cake with one layer of vanilla ice cream and another layer of strawberry ice cream), and poking around Baskin-Robbins' site looking at ice cream cake etc.
Maybe something involving Jack Daniels' barbecue sauce. LOL Not sure
What are you cooking up for Father's Day?

Bourbon Marinated Flank Steak, broiled as we don't own a grill. DH loves cheese cake and I'll buy some slices - better than the two of us finishing off a whole cake. That Neapolitan ice cream cake sounds delicious, calcook!

I was thinking along the same lines when I mentioned Jack Daniels. Maybe steak with a pat of whiskey butter or boozy ribs and corn etc. Can't go wrong with cheese cake. The Neopolitan ice cream cake is pricey and only. 8". Still poking around and looking for new ideas.

Not that I am trying to dissuade you from buying a few slices of cheesecake, but this was excellent, smallish, and easy! I thought it was too much crust, but I could have eaten the filling with a spoon! Maybe that is a good idea--cheesecake in a glass!
Lemon-Poppy Seed Cheesecake Bars (Food Network Magazine April 2016)
For crust: Combine 1 1/2 c flour, 1/2 c powdered sugar, 1Tbsp poppy seeds, pinch of salt. Work in 2 sticks softened butter until clumps form. Press into a foil-lined 9-inch square baking pan. Bake at 350 until lightly browned, about 25 minutes. In food processor, mix 1 c Greek yogurt, 6ozs cream cheese, 1/2 c sugar, 1/2 c heavy cream, and grated zest and juice of half a lemon. Process until thick and combined. Pour over crust and refrigerate overnight until set.

Found a good-looking recipe for whiskey compound butter on Epicurious (for topping the steaks, or burgers etc).
Some ideas, so far, for the menu
Blue cheese wedge salad
Steaks with whiskey butter
Corn on the cob
French potato salad
Ree Drummond''s Onion Strings - either buttermilk or beer battered
Neapolitan ice cream cake from the bakery, or an easy peasy recipe for Neapolitan ice cream pie on Betty Crocker site
Links on request.

Today is my mom's bday (85!) and her bday will be the main celebration this weekend. We will toast to my dad and celebrate my brother, brother-in-law, and nephew who are the dads in our family. I'm doing a taco bar for dinner. My sister is making my mom's favorite chocolate cake for the bday cake. We always celebrated my mom's birthday and father's day together, so the weekend is bittersweet for me with my dad not there.

Father's Day will be quiet around our house (and we have earned it!). All my kids were home from school, but they are now finally going in various directions for the summer. My DS#1 left yesterday for a 6 week trip as a counselor to Eastern Europe and Israel. DD leaves on Father's Day to be a camp counselor for 2 months at the overnight camp that she has been going to since she was 6 y.o.!! She will come home weekend after this one for her high school graduation and then go right back to camp the next day. Finally, DS#2 is going to be home the summer but he has a 5 day/week job working about 8 hr. each day. That and a busy social life so he is not around too much. Sunday will just be DH and I. Not sure what the plans are yet, but may go out if that's what he chooses. I am marinating a flank steak now so that is always a possibility for DH (I am not a meat eater but I have a bean dish planned for me). So that's it.....nothing too exciting, but the peace and quiet is needed right now!!!

My husband has been dying to make this milkshake for years, so I'm going to surprise him with it! smittenkitchen.com/2015/05/toasted-marshmallow-milkshake/Other than that, we're having our 11 yo's birthday party with our family on Sunday. I'm making a mixed grain cherry salad from this month's CL, and the momofoku milk bar birthday cake.

Some great food planned. Have fun!
calcook and swedishcook -- Your menus sounds terrific! I don't have a grill either, I should try broiling a flank steak but I always worry about setting off the smoke alarm (super sensitive or maybe its just my cooking : ) )
erin -- I already copied down that recipe from another thread. Ok seeing it mentioned again, might just convince me to bump it up and make it. I do need a small dessert for a dinner next week, and and this sounds perfect. The last thing I need is a ton of leftovers.
PattiA -- Hope you have a fun time celebrating, and that you are keeping the celebration going and can cheer your dad, although will certainly be tough. I always think a taco bar is a great idea since people can customize what they want to eat.
KarenW -- Enjoy the quiet. Man time flies, I remember reading posts and your kids were so little.
SallyT -- What a fun surprise! If not too much trouble, I would love a review. I remember seeing that recipe on SK too, and like your DH, it caught my eye. Off to check out that CL recipe. Have fun celebrating your daughter's bday.

No kids, but he is "daddy" to a couple feline boys. They're giving him a Life is Good lobster T-shirt.Thought about steaming lobster for dinner, but I think we'll boil shrimp instead. Bought blueberries at the farmers' market today. Going to make zabaglione later today

It is HOT here - today it's 100 degrees and tomorrow it's expected to hit 107 which is even too hot to BBQ outdoors. Sooo, we will have sandwiches - tonight BLTs and tomorrow tuna salad. This heat is supposed to continue all week so it will be either salad or sandwiches on the menu for a while.

The weather is pretty much the same here too, Mcgee. Glad I have two indoor grills. One is a digital George Foreman, and the other one is larger, but fits on the counter. The market had stuffed clams (Malawar?) and chocolate covered strawberries. Going to give them a try. Edited the menu a bit. Glad the market delivers. I'm not going out in this heat.. Happy Father's Day all.

Re: toasted marshmallow milkshake - good, my family liked it more than I did. It was VERY thin so we added 8 (!) more scoops of ice cream. I wouldn't repeat, but they loved.

Thanks for all reviews and recipes. After first searching in vain I finally bought two slices plain cheese cake from Cheese Cake Factory. Served with fresh raspberries. We are empty nesters for over 20 years and the girls live a couple of states away in opposite directions.

Sallyt -- Thanks for the review. So glad the family enjoyed (and what an great treat for your DH). I like how you adapt by adding 8 scoops more ice cream! Onto the next milkshake....
