Is anyone here a member of Eat Your Books? I am actually doing a trial membership at the moment and it is an online website that indexes cookbooks. Since there are a few of us who love cookbooks and magazines, I thought this may be of interest. Here is the blurb from their site: "Eat Your Books is a website for people who love cookbooks and love to use great recipes. If you have a cookbook collection, you probably get a lot of pleasure from browsing your books - but there are times when you haven't got time to look through them all to find a recipe. Or maybe you feel you're not using them as effectively as you'd like, sticking to familiar recipes or not branching beyond the current favorites. Eat Your Books can help you find recipes in seconds - we're the only website to have indexed the most popular cookbooks, so you can include them in your online searches. You might also like to use recipes from other sources and with Eat Your Books you can do a single search across ALL your recipes, no matter where they are. With Eat Your Books you can create your own personal Bookshelf and you can find recipes across: Your cookbooks - tell us which cookbooks you own. If we haven't indexed a favorite book, use the EYB indexing tools and do it yourself. Your food magazines - add that stack of magazines, all the most popular magazines have been indexed. Great food blogs and websites - add Food52, David Lebovitz, Smitten Kitchen, 101 Cookbooks and many more. Your own personal recipe clippings - bring some order to your clippings files by using the EYB indexing tools. Your favorite online recipes - using the EYB Bookmarklet you can add any online recipe to your collection. Eat Your Books is NOT a recipe site, so you won't find the recipes here, but you will be able to find them and if there is an online version of the recipe there will be a link to it." Eat Your Books

Hi Gecko, I'm not a member but I recall reading about that site on the CLBB way back. I could see how it could be super helpful for those that use lots of recipes from books etc and would like it more organized/easier to access. Enjoy.
I just do the cut and paste in word -- not ideal but it works for me And for the last few years I no longer cut out recipes from the paper etc since the pile would just increase and I would end up tossing.

applecrisp, when it comes to clipping recipes from magazines I've been surprised how many times I've found these online so I can cut and paste to word. Even from second hand cookbooks by Ina Garten. If all else fails I type if it's something that really interests me. Searching for recipes from several sources at the same time sounds like a great time saver.

Swedishcook, I'm with you, I've found so many recipes just be doing a search. I've been trying to be good (ok not great) about cutting back on the amount of recipes I save, even if just electronic since I have more than enough (plus maybe 20 or so cookbooks), since the cut and paste or adding to say pinterest, still takes up time/adds to my collection on my laptop/and it is just too many to look thru/try. Now if it it a recipe with tahini, feta etc, all bets are off.

I remember when we were all using MasterCook, but I ended up giving up on it because they never brought out a Mac version. I have almost 500 cookbooks, so I Eat Your Books a great source to locate that particular recipe I am looking for, or to type in a few ingredients and have some recipes suggested for me. BTW, I am in no way associated with them (other than having an account I paid for) and I do not work for them, just passing on information

I am a member, but one who needs to learn to use it better. When DH and I were married, I knew every cookbook and even magazine with a favorite recipe. That's no longer true. DId you know they have some magazines indexed? I have some more books to add to my EYB library, but then I need to work on magazines. What I really want to do is sort at the ones I really care about and scan them, create an index -- or for a couple I have an index, and get rid of piles of paper I am not using.

Because I have Mastercook and many magazines on it, I have indexes for many years of many magazines. Holler if you want something, Beth. PS: I posted some stuff about Eat Your Books back in Oct. I use it mostly for magazines. Many of them are indexed PLUS have links to the recipes. There are tools like Mastercook's grab feature and RecipeFox, even EverNote, that can be used to then grab each recipe (or in the case of RecipeFox, grab ALL the recipes if they are located at one site. Mastercook and Living Cookbook users can really get going with all of it if they also use John Shotsky's RecipeClips program. In other words, just about no matter what you use...nothing but Save to Text or Word or recipe software programs, you can use for MORE than just it's intended use.
The one negative: EYB doesn't offer a way to copy out the entire index in one action. That's why, when I want a copy of an entire index, I have to hope I have the book or mag in Mastercook or in a PDF or Ebook...and then I know I can copy the complete index to text or wherever I want to save it.
SO, if you want a complete copy of a cookbook or foodie mag index, check with me. There's a chance that I have it. (Especially foodie mags.) And it's easy for me to make one without having to type by hand or copy each recipe name one-at-a-time.

Thanks. I will try to remember that when I get to them. I have a few other projects for the house and my Monarchs that are taking priority now. The Monarchs hit early and heavy here. We have raised and released 120 so far and have another group in the works. I am still learning, so they keep me busy.

So many of my books are currently in storage since we downsized our house when a couple of the girls moved away to college. There was no way I could part with them, although there were lots of tears over my magazine collections.

Gecko, I feel your pain. I am facing a similar problem someday soon because we are talking about selling someday in order to get a small spot to manage. This place and the 1/2 acre is more than 2 over 60 year old people can keep up with (or want to or can justify). I use my laptop computer for most of my new books nowadays (ebooks) and Mastercook. I still have a ton of cookbooks (hardcopy) that I can't bear to part with. I did get rid of many last year. Put a table out front with Free sign and kept replenishing it for days. Nice way to meet passersby, too. It was actually fun. But alas, I am an addict. I still do buy hardcopy cookbooks now and then. And Rose books. And art books. And .... SO, I've mentioned to my husband about STORAGE when we move. He isn't thrilled with that idea. LOL

Gecko, I didn't realize until the other day that the Mastercook *online* account...the one they are working on the most these days...is for any device, Macs included. I know nothing about all that...but just thought I'd mention. SO, I suppose that means that you could go online, get the free account, use your Eat Your Books to take you to any recipes you want online -- or unrelated to EYB, grab any recipes online, save to that online account, shop, making shopping lists, etc... for at least 25 recipes at a time. Then if you really like and find it useful, you could purchase a year's worth and use that account for all your recipe saving, etc. I don't know enuf about the online status to know if it's ready for ALL devices now...or if it's still in the works. It might really be fun way to work with recipes and not have to have stuff in your house. Something I do, re: limited space in house -- ebooks of cookbooks! LOVE THEM!! I have hundreds! I buy em, friends send me them and I get them from library! SO NICE! Space on COMPUTER is all they take up. Wonderful!!
