Hi Karen,
how was your trip to Boston? How's your son's transition?

Sally, Thanks for asking. Most of the trip went smoothly. We hit absolutely no traffic in either direction which for Boston as you know is a small miracle. Actually, a big one! Move in to his dorm was smooth and he has a huge room in a building right across from Harvard square so it is a beautiful setting. Not that he appreciates that, of course. But by the time we got there and got him settled, we had no time to grab lunch as they wanted all the Freshman and parents to line up for a convocation. And after that they kicked the parents all out!!! So he was on his own for dinner. They had a BBQ for the students. That was at 4 PM so we decided to start heading home. We ended up making a pit stop in Hartford which is where my oldest son is going to school and we had dinner there with him. I'll have to save your suggestions for the next visit. The only main downer of the whole day was my son himself. He was very sad/depressed as he is/was leaving his girlfriend of 3 years, the one he thinks is "it." All you had to do that day (and the night before for that matter) was mention her name and he would tear up and had to leave the room! Anyway, I have communicated with her since move in day (as well as my son briefly) and I guess he is doing better and really does love the area. He and his girlfriend are talking everyday, video chatting a lot, and he is trying to get out there to meet people(he is very social so that is no problem) plus he is very busy with his classes. She has told me there will be lots of opportunities for her to go visit with the first visit at the end of this month. She is going up for the campus tour (she is a high school senior this year in my daughter's class!) and plans to apply there for next year. I think the other big adjustment for my son was being in a big city with many "different" kinds of people. He has led a very sheltered life growing up in a smaller conservative town. But I think he will fit in just fine in Boston.

Exciting times! Best of luck to your son (both of your sons) in their college careers!
