I've made smittenkitchen's one-pan farro wit tomatoes a couple of times and it is so good! I've always followed as written (using grape or cherry tomatoes) but I was wondering if anyone has tried it with canned tomatoes. I am trying to use up some canned goods so just wondering (and I have just four grape tomatoes on hand) and I don't want to deal with the after work shopping crowd. Another idea, order pizza tonight, and pick up grape tomatoes over the weekend. I was just looking for an easy dish tonight and got reminded of this dish after seeing her instagram today. Of course you can sub it, just wondering if would really take away from such a good dish. Here's the recipe, smittenkitchen.com/2013/07/one-pan-farro-with-tomatoes/And for those that make it, do you have as a side, a main, along with ? I just had as main, and leftover are great too! Thx.

It's been awhile since I made this dish, but I bet canned tomatoes would work in a pinch. I might do well drained petite diced or whatever you have on hand. Or even replace some of the water with the drained tomato liquid for a more "tomatoey" result. I am sure it will be a slightly different dish with canned vs. fresh, but I bet it will still be tasty. I am making a veggie dish for tomorrow and subbing some canned tomatoes for fresh. The dish I am making calls for diced tomatoes, not specifically cherry which are usually acceptable tasting throughout the year. But since beefsteak are only decent in summer, I will use canned.
Let us know if you have success, Karen

I haven't made that recipe, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. I sub canned tomatoes for recipes where the tomatoes need to be cooked with other ingredients and get great results. I wouldn't hesitate to sub in this recipe.

I forgot all about this post, sorry. Karen and cafe latte -- thanks for the info. I ended up not making it for dinner, just went with leftovers. But I do want to give it a try with canned tomatoes since I always have cans of tomatoes on hand. And like you both said, bet it would still be really good, just a bit different. I've subbed canned tomatoes in recipes before, just never in this one. Not sure why I was hesitant.
caffelatte, I made the recipe a few times, and thought it was very good. A big recommend here.
