I was just wondering how many people here actually do something special for Valentine's Day... It's a Tuesday and both DH and I work all day on Monday and Tuesday...flowers are nice but I always tell him not to buy them, the prices are outlandish...I might make something special to give him to share at work but normally we do nothing...what about you?

We don't do anything. Our anniversary is the 11th so we'll go out for dinner to celebrate that but as far as we're concerned, Valentine's Day is a non-event. And I'm not a fan of cut flowers, they give me a headache . Love fresh flowers outdoors but don't bring them in the house...well, I'll make an exception for Tulips - I love them indoors and out.

We usually have a nice dinner at home and that's it. This year, though, as a Christmas gift to DH, I reserved us a night in a local lighthouse that's been converted to a B&B the weekend immediately before Valentine's Day. Should be fun!

Ohhh a lighthouse B&B sounds like such fun!!!! I'm so envious. Every year, about this time...boxes of those little hearts with the words on them (some selected just for me...the words) start appearing on my desk, on the kitchen table, often just the hearts and not the boxes included...on notes he leaves me, on my chair seat, etc. (When the boxes ARE there, most of the hearts except a few green and yellow ones (and maybe a pink one) remain and have been placed around the empty box. I've always thought that he doesn't like those last ones...but maybe it's the words on them that holds him off from devouring them, too. I dunno.) This has been going on for years... he likes to eat them, you see...but he's THINKING of me...right... So, to my surprise, after a couple of recent days of hearts appearing, and yes, a few were on the table mit empty box when I got up, but...shock, a mini Almond Rocca packet and another little package of chocolate turtles was sitting there next to the hearts!! These, I do believe, really are for ME to eat...mostly. (Things are getting better and better around here--30 years later.)

This is the first time I heard about lighthouse B&B. What a great idea! Enjoy!! Catbatty, those candies are like little love notes for you to find. If there is a special day that involves chocolate we wouldn't pass up that opportunity. DH's favorite is Mozart Kugeln (marzipan and nougat covered with dark chocolate). I'm crazy about Godiva's open oysters. Only a few because an open box is an empty box - and we both know that. You could call it a no surprise gift exchange. I don't wear jewelry and I don't care much for cut flowers, especially not red roses. (Long story long ago before I met Mr. Right.)

I used to do something goofy like make something for dinner that went with biscuits, heart shaped biscuits. But for the past few years we have been going away in Feb to escape winter a bit, so our trip is our Valentine's Day celebration.

I bought DH a card today and maybe we'll fix something sort of special for dinner. No gifts and most restaurants are a rip-off on V-day, overpriced and overwhelmed.

Since it's amateur night at the restaurants, and overpriced besides, we don't go out on 2/14. I really don't want anything (well, except some full-sized Reese's Peanut Butter Cups--yeah, it's lowbrow chocolate but my favorite candy). With our son being married this year, we're anticipating buying a special necklace for me to wear with my mom-of-groom dress (I inherited a drop but there's no necklace to hang it on), & knowing how pricey jewelry can be, I told DH let's not buy random stuff on 2/14 & Mother's Day but just apply any $ toward that necklace. I'm so easy to please. He has always made V-Day & other occasions very special; we do cards & such & we'll make a special dinner at home on 2/14. And a richly chocolate dessert, of course. We also get a big kick out of using V-Day as an opportunity to show love to our kids: cards, away-from-home care packages, chocolate. That's fun. And it means everyone gets something nice on V-Day, whether or not there's a "special someone" to do it.

If I was going to be home for Valentine's Day, I would make these. heart ravioliI was thinking along similar lines, like crab and ricotta filled ravioli with a lemon butter herb sauce and asparagus on the side. There's a small breakfast-like place that serves red velvet pancakes with mascarpone that's very tempting. My brain says yes, but my waistline says maybe not. At the end of the day, I think men would prefer a side of beef, while women would rather have a more foo foo kind of dish. Thankfully , everyone likes chocolate though. LOL.

How did you like your lighthouse B&B experience? I hope it was everything you hoped for. I'm still in love with the idea. Do you have a link you can share? I'd love to see this place. Thanks. Yes, we had a wonderful time! It ended up snowing that day, which made the experience even more romantic in my opinion. Here is a link to their website--they use coal to heat the stove and a cistern for all of the water used (drinking water is treated), and there are 1930's vintage refrigerator and stove in the kitchen to add to the ambiance. There would be a lot more to do during the summer, but we enjoyed just hunkering down and reading by the fire.

Thank you! Looks awesome. Were you two alone in the place? Someone must live there full-time? Lovely quilts. Looks like a very bright, clean and lovely place for as old as it is. Here is another thank you for the link. I'll share it with DH. Maybe we'll go there one day. Light houses have a special place in my heart. I'm so glad it was as good as you hoped.

Brenda There are two rooms in the B&B, so there was another couple there as well. It would be fun to get together with another couple and basically have the place to yourselves! Yes, there is a youngish couple with an adorable toddler who live there full-time--they were pretty unobtrusive though (not that we really would have cared).
