I make the Knorr's Spinach Dip recipe from the back of the vegetable soup mix packet, with a few modifications. I make it fat free by using all fat free greek yoghurt (no sour cream or mayo)--we really like it with greek yoghurt. Also, I only add lots of chopped scallions--I am not a fan of water chestnuts. Anyhow, I recently decided to look at the ingredients on the back of the packet and saw that MSG is the second ingredient. Yikes.
Do any of you have a flavoring soup type packet with a similar flavor profile that you use that does not contain MSG? Or do you have a recipe where you make your own spinach dip with a similar flavor profile? I thought about finely chopping up carrots and maybe red peppers but was wondering if that would result in chewy bits that would turn off some of the fussy people in my family who are used to the non-chewy-ness of the dip (well, other than the chewy spinach and scallions, of course).
Thoughts?

Sigh.
I miss that dip! The MSG was a deal-breaker for me too when I discovered it on the packet. I have yet to find the right combination of things to dump in the dip to come close to the original.
But as I read what you were thinking about chopping up the veggies finely, I wonder if you could use dried vegetables and give them a whir in a spice grinder to make veggie powders? I've been making my own rice blends by using dried vegetables from Penzeys, but haven't ground them up to make powders. Garlic powder and onion powder together go a long way in making a dip tasty, but I've never thought about using other veg.

Oh, scallions, what a great idea. I love them on everything. I'm going to make some of that Knorr dip one of these days using Greek yogurt, scallions AND maybe those things you don't like or not! Thanks for bringing this long forgotten delight up! I've always kept away from it because of the mayo--but I *love* it so. I want to use fresh spinach (?)...because I've never seen good frozen...but it's been years. Last time I opened a package...decades ago, it was tough and smelled like fish. I wonder if the BAGS of frozen are better than the boxes of it?? Maybe I just got some bad stuff? So, what do you think...when a recipe calls for frozen spinach (as so many do), can I what?..saute some fresh spinach to get the same thing?? I've always wondered and never have tried. Gee, I should just give it a try sometime instead of always wondering...how lazy I am!)

Catbatty:
i have always thought about steaming some fresh spinach and using that. I think it would be fine. I would just make sure you chop the spinach. I have had better luck with the packaged frozen spinach in the bag rather than the boxed frozen. The one thing I do now is to chop the spinach more, even though I buy the chopped spinach. It distributes better throughout the dip that way and then one is not eating a wad of spinach with every bite.
I was was just on the Penzeys web site and ordered some Chip and Dip seasoning which looks similar ingredients-wise to the Knorrs, minus the MSG. So, I am going to try that and see how that tastes.
This spinach dip was how I first got my kids to eat spinach!

This looks really promising! Some of the comments below make it sound like it's at least close to the Knorr dip.

You won't believe this but I was making the spinach dip using Penzey's Chips and Dip spice mix and I happened to pull out a Knorr Vegetable soup packet that I used to use for the dip and just happened to glance at the ingredients list and guess what? No MSG. I thought my eyes were going bad. So I pulled out another packet and sure enough, one packet contains MSG and a newer package does not. So, Knorr now makes a packet *without* MSG! By luck, when I was at the store I had grabbed a packet that said, "No artificial flavor" on the front of it. And this new packet has updated Spinach Dip recipe ingredients--it says to use sour cream *or* greek yoghurt. It's almost like they read our thread! ;-)
