I'm almost out of Minor's Chicken Base (I get the low sodium chicken version) and I'm planning to place a new order soon. I've ordered from them a few times (soupbase.com) and have always just bought this one item. I was wondering if any of you order from them, what do you buy/like etc?
And I have to give props to their customer service. On two different times I asked them how long does it last/when I placed my last order/how best to store etc -- and they said the chicken base concentrate is fine, no need to buy more! And it was opened for a long time. They easily could have said, oh you should toss...... or for better flavor we suggest replacing.....
If you are not familiar, here's a blurb: Minor's soup bases are perfectly seasoned, paste-style concentrates of freshly cooked meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. They are 100% natural, containing no artificial ingredients, preservatives or color. Most of the soup bases contain less than 1 gram of fat per serving and are available in No-Added MSG, Low Sodium and Vegetarian Varieties. Minor's soup base will add a dimension to your dishes you never thought possible. You can create the same flavor profile in recipes, at home, that you savor at your favorite white tablecloth restaurants. All meat bases yield 5 gallons of perfectly flavored stock. (the container is just 16 ounces)
No surprise I first heard about them on the old CLBB. I find it super convenient, no waste, no need to store cans/boxes of stock ......
Thanks.

I used to buy the Organic "Better than Bouillon" base from Costco. Their ingredients seem close to what Minor's is. I've switched back to cans because there's no sugar in those--of course, I should re-read the label since they can change ingredients on a dime. I've tried the beef from this brand and was not impressed. I know Penzey's also has their own bases they sell---I tried mushroom once and liked it..waaaay back.

I use "Better than Bouillion" and also buy cans/packs as well. I didn't realize some contained sugar - should read those labels more. I have never ordered Minor, but remember them mentioned on the old CLBB. Do you order from them or Amazon? How long do you keep it once it's been opened? I haven't tried TJ's and I think Penzey's has some bases as well that I haven't tried.

Another one who uses Better than Bullion -- read about that on the CLBB too. LOL I can pick it up at Trader Joes, regular grocery sstore or Costco (in a larger jar). I seem to have missed the Minor's discussion.
I hadn't noticed Penzey's mushroom, but I did get some dried mushrooms and mushroom powder from Spice World -- sister site to Beanilla where I ordered vanilla beans.

I also use B than B! It's totally fine. If I'm using a large quantity of chicken broth/stock, I'll buy Swanson's

Thanks everyone --- So lots of B than B fans out there. I've never tried it before and it is good to know that many of you like it. I might give it a try when I finish the last of what I have. I could just pick it up locally.
Has anyone tried both? I wonder how they compare in taste etc. It looks like you can't go wrong with either one.
cafelatte -- I've always ordered it straight from them. I don't know, I just wanted to make sure I was getting the freshest stuff and that it wasn't sitting in a warm warehouse or something (no reason behind it). And I've kept it open for over a year and they said it was fine past that. Their site says " We suggest using Minor's Bases at their peak quality. Most Minors' Bases are the best when used within one year. Seafood Bases are best when used within nine months." They also said you can freeze, I just refrigerate as directed.
Thx all.

Nothing in my fridge would stay opened for a year, so I would be safe there. I agree with the wanting freshest lots, but you'd be surprised how many companies use Amazon or other consolidated warehouses to ship from. I can't think of the company, but I've ordered directly from only get a box from Amazon, and I probably could have saved on shipping costs too.

I use Minors. I have also used B and B as well as Penzeys. They are all acceptable to me but I do prefer Minors over the others for flavor, ease of dissolving, and seems smoother (less gritty) to me. I think in the end product, the minimal grittiness I encounter is not detectable once I complete a recipe, so you are probably fine with any of these. When I order Minor's, I get the low sodium chicken and vegetable bases. I usually order 3-4 of the chicken and 1 vegetable at a time. I store mine in the freezer at all times. I have an extra freezer in my basement for the unopened ones. The ones that are opened, I keep in my upstairs freezer and I find I it is soft enough to spoon straight from the freezer when I need some (i.e. it does not freeze solid).

Karen Karen, Thanks so much for the info and comments. I never thought about freezing the Minor's base --- thanks for the tip.
