Had to drive over an hour tonight to emergency animal hospital. Stripey was throwing up; when I went to look for him, he lost use of his hind legs. The look on his poor, sweet face--fear, discomfort, confusion. I tried calling a few of the vets but no one is on call. Finally drove the hour or so... Embolism at the base of his spine and a secondary pulmonary embolism. He must have had an Arrhythmia that came on suddenly. He had a check up less than a year ago and was told he was in super health, especially for being 11. I can't believe my baby died at 11. ****sob*****

Thanks. He was a male, not that really matters. ***SOB**** the house dynamics are going to change and his adopted brother is looking for him for their morning chase. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! Oops, sorry, you did say he. Mine is female so I tend to always refer to cats as she. I'm sure your other cat is sensing something has happened.

so sorry RIP Stripey... good you did the drive and ended things soon. You know you did all that you could do..... that isn't anything fixable.

Wallycat, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you were there for him when he needed you. It's the one part of having pets that really stinks.

Thank you all, very much. I think the shock of how sudden and the manner in which he died is weighing heavily on me. Can't get his suffering face out of my head. Death can be so unkind...no kidding...sigh. His check up did not indicate anything sinister...and then this. I guess, just like people, no one gets to pick when the grim reaper visits us, or how. Thank you all again.

Thank you all again. I can imagine. Last summer we were visiting my sister who has 3 cats and a dog. All the animals were playing and approaching us (unlike my scared one). 12 hours later, she texted me to tell me she was sent to a University vet hospital because one of her cats (a Ragdoll) was deathly ill. He ended up passing away. Turns out is was some sort of bacteria in his intestines (they did an autopsy and she got results about 6 wks later). We were floored since he looked perfectly fine the night before. I've heard that cats are good at hiding illness or when something is wrong, so most times when we notice, it's too late. It's okay to grieve and it will get easier over time of course.

Wallycat, I thought I posted earlier but don't see it. I am so sorry for your loss and so glad Stripey lived his years embraced in your love. There's just never enough time with them because they are incredible and enrich our lives.

I'm in tears and I didn't even know Stripey-cat. I don’t know that I can say anything to make you feel better after losing your furry-buddy, but I would like to say I’m sorry for your loss. ((huggs))

Thank you all again. I'm so sorry. I know from experience that those sudden losses are even harder than when you're a bit prepared. We lost our Hanna on Wednesday. She was 18.5 and had health issues. It was pretty clear the last couple days that the time had come. Found a lovely angel vet who came to the house to set her free.

Oh Charlie. My heart goes out to you. You did good. I'm in tears now, too.
Adding to say: we've been so lucky to have such loves to live with and to care for. And now to miss. I love every one of my babies forever.

Thank you all! It's unfortunate that the loss of a pet is a common bond for many of us, but such is life.

Yes. Many pets (I wish all) are, in fact, family members. So Wallycat and Charley, we do understand. It seems that most of us here are pet parents and we feel for you. I keep thinking I should share photos of my only cat now...Winnie. Maybe our sweet babies would make us all feel better? I had sworn off...heart could not take the pain of loss, not one more time. Gave away EVERYTHING cat related--3 months later, I met Winnie... We are now a threesome family...each needs the other two.
