What are your food plans? Any special menus or nibbles that you're making? Haven't been out on the road on New Year's Eve in years. Prefer to stay home to avoid the drunk drivers and police checkpoints. . So far, I'm thinking of rounding up a few lobster tails to make lobster scampi over linguini, with crusty bread and butter etc for New Year's Eve. Have saved a few ideas to compare. New Year's Day - Chicken Vesuvio (chicken, white wine garlic potatoes and peas) from proud Italian cook.com.Dessert from the bakery.
I'm open to new ideas, though. What's the plan at your home?
Happy New Year.
ETA: Noticed the market has chocolate panettone and Cappuccino gelato. Might add this to the list for dessert or New Year's Eve, along with some eggnog.

I have fond memories of eating fondue on NYE. We never did the cheese or chocolate, just the oil. Lots of fun and laughs around the tables as we ate. Lately, I've been staying home more though--I prefer a quiet NYE if I cannot have the big, fancy blow-out party. All or nothing! And, this year, I've not been feeling well, so food is an issue. I might do breaded chicken and a roasted acorn squash. NYD means pork roast and we have plenty of pork left from our Christmas party crown roast fiasco. Sometimes sauerkraut, sometimes gravy, sometimes both, but not together! I think my contribution will be mashed potatoes. Also headed out on Friday night for my dad's family Christmas. I hear tell we are having chili so I might make cornbread (maybe Corn-Studded Corn Muffins with Honey Mascarpone) or rolls (maybe H erbed Pull-Apart Rolls) or dessert. I've been thinking about Anna's One-Bowl Mocha Cream Cake lately, but there are so many new recipes to try. We'll see where the end of the week gets me!

Staying home but no menu plans yet. Just want to thank you, calcook, for introducing me to Chicken Vesuvio. Had never heard about that dish before. Not even during my many visits to Chicago.

I like Marie's blog too. Her bucatini amatriciana is a regular in our house. Those stuffed portobellos look really good! Printing to save for this summer when I have garden fresh tomatoes.

New Year's Eve we will again go to our local French/Spanish bistro for food that always amazes (hint-I'm having duck breast and seared foie gras with blackberry gastrique for my appetizer). New Year's Day for us is traditionally movie or shopping sales + football so I chose something easy and semi-healthy after the holiday excesses, black-eyed pea gumbo allrecipes.com/recipe/78454/black-eyed-pea-gumbo/ A pan of cornbread and we're good to go. Happy New Year's everyone.

DH always makes black-eyed peas for New Year's Day, and we have ham, cornbread, some kind of greens (turnip or other).
For New Year's Eve, in recent years we've been taking in a midnight movie, then going to the local all-night diner to eat.

We usually have our neighborhood gang over for NYE. It's casual--everyone brings an appetizer or dessert to share--and no one has to worry about DWI. Both my sisters and their families will be visiting as well! Besides shrimp, veggies/hummus, and a cheese platter, I'm going to try to make this Bread and Butter Lattice recipe that I initially saw in Bon Appetit. New Year's Day is kind of weird this year: since it falls on a Sunday, there are no bowl games and, more importantly, no Rose Parade until the 2nd!! We usually have our tradition of making mimosas from the leftover champagne and lazing around watching the parade on TV, which we'll have to scrap. So I think the girls are going to watch White Christmas (it's a sisterly tradition), and the guys will go out go-karting. I'll probably throw some pulled pork in the slow cooker.

We are having a group of 8 friends over for New Year's Day lunch. It is Southern all the way. My family always ate good luck foods on 1/1, so I am continuing the tradition.
Texas caviar pickled okra grilled pork tenderloin chipotle mayo sauce collards sweet potatoes pinto beans cornbread tea
For New Year's Eve, I am making a pot of red beans and rice, a new favorite in our house.

Thank you calcook and charley for the links to the Proud Italian blog. The Vesuvio Chicken would be perfect for this weekend and the caprese mushrooms look excellent.

How did I not know this?! I have decided I am not a fan of the holidays on Sunday thing. I am trying to make a shopping list for the weekend. DH wants to grill at some point, so I think I'm going to pull various cuts of pork out and let him do whatever he wants with fire on Sunday. For sure there is a rack of ribs hiding in the freezer, maybe a roast to go with since there is only one rack. Otherwise I have some loin and some chops if he'd rather. I guess I'll let him choose. I might make some red beans and rice to go with that-that sounds like a great go-with. I think I'll surprise DH with some homemade Irish Cream. Smitten Kitchen posted a recipe on her blog, and I have everything on hand except the whipping cream. No clue for NYE. We seldom do anything and usually end the year by turning in early. This year we're staying up and playing games and/or watching movies. But I have no idea what to prepare to eat.

Thanks for that link mcgee! Thank you all for making me aware of the change of date. We had no idea. Now DH has a few days to get over his disappointment. We are old and retired and can watch any day even if bowl games on New Years Day have been a tradition. DD1 even took her daddy to the Rose Bowl a few years back My grocery list is written. For New Years Eve I'm making Shrimp and Scallops with saffron served over fresh linguine (my version of Venetian Shrimp and Scallops omitting the broth). The Lobster Scampi above was my inspiration Dessert from La Madeleine Bakery - Sacher Cake. We both think that's the best store bought chocolate dessert in town whether authentic or not. ETA: Soupandstew, I also got all the ingredients for the gumbo you posted. Thank you!! Great comfort food on a sleepy New Years Day.

Still undecided. Have been on a non-cooking kick this week.
Maybe baked ham, sweet onion casserole, sauteed spinach, and baked sweet potatoes for NYE.
Then ham sandwiches, cole slaw, and black-eyed peas for NYD.

Not authentic, but I like this CL recipe. I adapt: make my own rice; up the sausage and have used many different kinds; have used seasoned salt instead of Cajun seasoning; usually leave off the parsley.
Andouille and Red Beans with Rice CL 3/06 1 3.5oz bag boil-in-bag long-grain rice 4 ounces andouille sausage, diced 1 cup chopped red bell pepper 1 cup prechopped onion 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons salt-free Cajun seasoning 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco) 1 (16-ounce) can dark kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 (14-ounce) can fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1/2 teaspoon salt Cook rice according to the package directions, omitting salt and fat. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add sausage; cook 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Using a slotted spoon, transfer sausage to a bowl, and keep warm. Add bell pepper, onion, Cajun seasoning, thyme, and hot pepper sauce to pan; sauté 3 minutes or until onions are tender. Add beans and broth to pan; cook 8 minutes or until thick, mashing half the beans. Add sausage, parsley, and salt to pan; cook 1 minute or until thoroughly heated, stirring occasionally. Serve over rice.
Decided to make the mocha cake. It is cooling on the counter. Hope it is as good as I remember! Hmmm, didn't know about the college football either. Maybe I want to go to my parents' on Monday instead of Sunday! No TV here.

I appreciate the heads-up on the lack of football and parades on Sunday. Hello, old clueless person here thought it was the usual New Year's Day, oh duh......
Okay, so if I want to watch the games (Monday), I have to take down the Christmas decorations on Sunday. But that can work b/c Monday is usually my cleaning day and I can definitely watch football while cleaning.
Happy New Years!

Well, last night, I made Bon Appetit's Fruity Rum Bundt Cake. Today, I made a marinated black-eyed-pea salad starting w/fresh peas (soaked overnight), fresh tomatoes, thyme . . . it's great, & it's sturdy enough for leftovers to be just as good for our lunch on Sunday. Main dish for tonight (BEPeas = side dish) is Ina's roast pork loin w/ a Dijon & thyme rub, w/ fennel, potatoes, onions, & carrots. Burned my arm on the 425-degree roaster handle; derp. But otherwise, we should have a great dinner, although I've worn myself out w/ cooking plus putting away Xmas decor (I made meringue cookies today, too), so I've done zero prep on my planned family breakfast for tomorrow. What I love is the juxtaposition of commentary by my family: "hey, don't wear yourself out; take a break for awhile," but then "what's for snacks around here?" (after I've already planned, shopped for, & cooked, breakfast-lunch-dinner-baking-more). Yeah; those two quotes are often heard in the same day, but they do NOT go together well, do they? Ha!

After last night's massive feast (see this post, and yes I did the tamales, too) just about every part of my body aches. I decided that Chicago Dogs (or our version thereof) and champagne sound just fine for tonight. (That's a weird little thing my husband and I have done pretty much since the beginning of our relationship.) I Intend To Rest.

At this moment my entire house smells like pot roast. We are cooking pot roast from Cooks Illustrated and it smells heavenly. This time I decided to roast carrots separately and DH will make mashed potatoes. Nice thing is we won't need to cook for a few days after this feast.
The champagne is chilling in the fridge and light appetizers will be Union Square bar nuts from Smitten Kitchen and Cambazola (?) blue cheese and crackers. Probably won't need any dessert 😄.

Happy New Year's everyone. The black-eyed pea gumbo was a good concept but failed in execution. I followed the recipe exactly and it produced a somewhat tasty mush. Next time I will cook the rice separately in chicken broth and add to the pea mixture which I will simmer maybe 20-25 minutes. I think that technique will preserve a lot more texture. I will also add sliced andouille sausage or diced ham to the bean mixture.

Thanks for the gumbo review soupandstew! As it turned out I cooked Meaty Spaghetti Soup last night. Great for DH who is trying to get over the big, bad cold I gave him desertculinary.blogspot.com/2008/12/meaty-spaghetti-soup.html?m=1It was posted on CLBB by applecrisp. Big batch made enough for three dinners in a household of two. Love to be lazy once in a while

We usually host New Year's Eve for some dear friends, but one friend was ill this year. I made a big pot of beef stew, a green salad, appetizers, and cherry pie and "hosted" at their home so we could all still celebrate together. Less fancy than usual, but the stew was good and being with friends was great.
