I saw this cookbook the other day, flipped through it, & decided I wanted to make something from every page. Amazon link here: link . If you have this book, what do you think of it? I'm interested in a general opinion plus any thoughts about cake recipes I can do in Bundt pans (probably anything in the firm/pound type of category, I would suppose). Thanks!

I was tempted to buy it sight unseen, but I spotted it in Costco and flipped through it. While I totally trust Bittman's books and my son uses his original one like I used Joy of Cooking when I was his age, it didn't strike me as something that would really add to what I already have enough to justify it. If you felt differently, I might need to see if I can take another look at it.

While I don't have the book, I'm a fan of Bittman/NY Times' food/recipes. Enjoy his cooking videos as well. He makes everything look easy. The no-knead bread was a big winner. Don't know if it would work in a Bundt pan though Re Bundt pan cakes, there's a recipe for Flan cake that's been on the web for ages. Maybe it will interest you. Have fun with your new cookbook.

Have fun with your new cookbook. Well, not yet. But Santa knows I'd probably love it!

I have the book and think it is just so-so. Many of his recipes are already on line, plus he devotes pages to small tweaks...which to me are common sense. Do you have a library that carries it? Or inter-library loan it. After having it for 2-3 weeks, you can decide for yourself if it is worth it. I would ship you mine but it probably costs more to ship than it does to buy it these days.

What a kind offer, wallycat! Thank you (you're likely right about ship costs but the thought is very nice and I appreciate it!). It's interesting that he does a lot of common-sense tweaks--I have a feeling I would like those (instead of thinking that they're obvious), b/c I am still trying to restart my cooking enthusiasm and it would feel a little more secure to have an expert spelling out that kind of thing. So what isn't working for you might actually be a good thing for me. I will let Santa know that the book is still on the list . . . ha! And just talking about baking is motivating me to squeeze in some baking time this afternoon if at all possible.

Oh, gosh, Catbatty--please tell me that was a cut-and-paste!!! Thanks for the comprehensive list; now I want the cookbook for sure. Wallycat, no worries--I think Bittman's titles all sound the same anyway; easy mistake. Now I want to bake, but it's time to go to bed. Maybe tomorrow. Ha! Yes, it was and you're most welcome.

As far as Bundt pans, have you heard of the book "Kiss my Bundt"? I got that one about the same time as Al Cakes Considered and Cake Keeper Cakes. There might be one other one in that group, but I've made some really good cakes out of them.

Beth, Have you made any of the recipes in Kiss My Bundt? I bought and read that book (little, as I recall) long ago. I remember that it was a fun & inspirational read, the kind of book that makes you want to get in the kitchen and give it a try.

And for Kiss My Bundt or anything else, I trust this board's reviews more than the Amazon reviews; the Amazon ones for KMB are not so great . . .

When you have a chance, check out foodlibrarian.com - I like big Bundts. Lol. There's a plethora of bundt cakes -- from zebra bundt cake to ice cream filled bundt cake, and the list goes on and on and on.

I just went to pull out KMB and found the other one I was thinking of right next to it -- Cake SImple. Cake Simple would be the first one I would buy for bundts. All Cakes Considered and Cake Simple have a different focus. KMB and Cake SImple have a lot of similar recipes, and I have probably made more out of CS -- the hardbound format is easier to work with than the small paperback that you have to weight down or break the binding to get to stay open as you mix. The $7.99 Kindle version might be the way to go on that one. And you can get a used copy of Cake Simple for as little as $4.15 (plus shipping). I'd pay that for the recipes I've already made.
It looks like I have a number marked in KMB, but the only one I am sure I made was the lime basil -- and I remember it being pretty great too. Cake Simple has Lemon Basil/ The Vanilla Pink Peppercorn was great. The reason I keep pink peppercorns in my stash now. I think I also made the Mojito, Cranberry Crème Fraiche, and at least a couple of others. Think it's time to make that cranberry one again...... And I'm going to have to check out that website too. LOL

just looked at the reviews for KMB -- 4 plus stars with 72% giving it 5 stars. That's a pretty solid rating in my book. I would buy them both. LOL

Calcook--Oh, my gosh; foodlibrarian is the best!!! I never heard of this blogger but I had such fun poking around the site, & am excited to see tons of Bundt recipes also. Today's recipe for the Dorie Greenspan cookies looks amazing also. I started following her on Instagram as a way to bookmark the site; thank you for sharing that link!
Edited to add: I just noticed that she hasn't updated her Bundt section since 2013. Wonder why? Hope it doesn't go the way of the CLBB . . . might be time to save some intriguing recipes.
Beth--I'll check out Cake Simple; thanks! It has been awhile since I checked out reviews for KMB, but I thought several people said they'd rather see photos of cakes than photos of her. Good point, since it's all about the cake, right? But I'll look at both again.

Kiss My Bundt has only a few pages with a group of photos in the center of the book, so those who feel every or at least most recipes should have a photo in order to be a worthy cookbook will be disappointed. There isn't even one of the sassy sketches per recipe....
Cake Simple is better about having photos -- not one for every recipe, but one for every few recipes, and better photos at that. And that said. my criteria for most books is what the recipe says to me -- the flavors, the ideas, the inspiration -- and then whether the recipes work or I can tweak them to get what I want out of them. Lots of glossy pictures, like the chocolate cake in most bakeries and restaurants, can get you to buy something that looks better than it really is. I've done it, but I try to be more careful.

Wow, Catbatty, thank you for sharing all the recipe titles!
My 12 year old niece has REALLY been bitten by the baking bug the last few years. For her birthday this year I bought her KAF's Baker's Companion, because she's been getting a lot of recipes off Pinterest... you know... the ones that LOOK good, but in reality don't taste the best or are impossible to re-create. I daresay the few baking samples I've had since then have been a big improvement. I was thinking about getting her Dorie's Baking for Christmas, but after seeing that recipe list, perhaps Bittman is the way to go. Especially if he goes into the details that he's used in his other Everything cookbooks- and the variations sound great too.

Mrswaz, I think that sounds like a really good book for someone fairly new to baking or who doesn't have a lot of books already. It might be one I eventually buy for either of my sons, but for now I've told myself that most of the things I saw in it that appealed to me were things I already had one or more recipes for. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it until I get my cookbooks shelves under control again.
