My kitty, Winnie (Winslow). Adopted him 1-1/2 years ago. He was, they think, 4 at the time. We have just now noticed something new about him. He cries loudly and stands near his food and water bowls. We humans coming running. Why, the bowls are both full enough--what's the problem, Winnie?
Well, that's how it started...
And each time, we would decide to pick up the water bowl, empty it, clean it, and refill it with fresh tap water...pure as the driven snow--just in case he was displeased with the level of water in the bowl or something.
Don'tcha just know soon as we gave him a fresh bowl of water he would begin slurping up water very enthusiastically? YEP. He wants his water bowl changed at his whim and snap *to* it!! LOL
(PS: Mind you, the water that he *doesn't* want...is always perfectly clear and clean and very lovely. But oh, it's not good enough. LOL)

I wish I could get my cat to drink water! I always put a bowl for her and she looks at me like "you know I won't drink that". Wallcat, My cat would only eat canned food at first, but I started leaving some dry food out for her and now she eats it. It only took about 6 months of leaving some out for her. It's great for the days we are out for long periods. She tends to eat many small meals rather that large meals. Cats do what they want to do, when they want to do it. I'm sure you cat lovers will get a kick out of this. Somebody showed me an article and photo of a cat in NZ that roams the neighborhood at night and steals underwear, socks, etc from the clotheslines of neighbors. There is a photo but I'm not sure I can post it here or link to the article. If you google "NZ cat steals underwear" you will find it easily.

Well obviously the standard of service in your house is sub-par. The cat wants cool, clean water and he wants it NOW. Mere humans should live to serve! Our dog pokes with her nose, often multiple times, to inform us she wants dinner, a walk, or whatever; she also stands and stares at us. She'll sometimes give me a poke if I sleep too late, making her wait for her breakfast and being let outside.

Our last cat would protest when he could see the bottom of his food bowl. The bowl would have plenty of food, but if there was a bare spot, he demanded more.
Our current cat is defective; he has no idea that boxes are the best cat toy ever. Absolutely no interest in boxes. He loves diving into paper bags, but has no interest at all in boxes (aka cat traps).

Update: Our cat, Winnie, is acting like a dog!
Husband goes off on backpacking trips every few weeks. He always goes for 6 nights. That's his big thing. (He even moderates a backpacking forum...in case you think he might have another woman somewhere. LOL) (Been there, done that...with a previous husband...and a boyfriend...and and and.... but no...not this guy--he is really CRAZY about backpacking!)
Anyway, I have now noticed two of hubby's latest returns home...once when his truck (NOT a loud diesel engine) came down street--mind you, it was out of sight, another time when truck arrived in driveway -- that WINNIE stands in entryway...yelling. MEOW!! MEOW!! Right in front of entry door. (On the INSIDE, I mean. He is never allowed out nor does he want to go out...so this screaming is not a signal that he wants out, I'm pretty sure.)
He's a DOG!!!!!!! He knows when his beloved daddy is anywhere near. Additionally, first nights that hus is gone, Winnie is kind of...put out...confused...needy. I've noticed that always. But this? He ALERTS when his person is HOME HOME HOME at LAST!!! LOL LOL
Editing to add: PS: This is NORMALLY not a very bright cat. We adopted him 1-1/2 yrs ago...at age 4. I must say that, of all the cats we've loved and lived with, he is the absolute dumbest of the bunch. No really. He can barely find a treat when it's thrown to him. Big, black and white, furry boy TUXEDO cat...dumb as a rock. So that is one reason his KNOWING when dad is home is such a surprise to me. (And that he loves his new daddy so much.)

Natasha, wally is no longer with us. He had a great 23 or so years. DH found him as a feral, wandering the neighborhood back in WI. The avatar I have is now Bandita. She is lone-female from a litter of 4 other males. Our WI neighbor took 3 and we have one brother (Stripey) (and they HATE each other). A new addition 2 years later (nick-named BB) when yet another feral was lurking in the neighborhood.
