(Editing to add: For new folks...figure I'd better explain. Back when there was a forum called Cooking Light message board, people *could* share and talk about any published magazine or book. And we all did. But one fun thing some folks did (many subscribed to Cooking Light magazine) was to talk about and cook from that magazine. We were NOT limited to just that one source. But we had fun waiting for each month's CL magazine to come out...and at least, many of us would all look it over together...and chat about marking the ones that looked good, etc. Some folks COOKED and reported back the duds and the successes. It was fun. Now, I've brought up the subject of maybe having another (or the same) mascot magazine for a period of time. It's just a thought. We used to have some fun times with having something to glomb onto and read over together. Nothing formal.) --- I wrote: After reading through archives of CLBB...one thing struck me: WE HAD SOMETHING TO FOCUS ON. For years, we had a magazine to talk about, to cook from, to report our findings about. That one magazine gave us all one thing to, as a group, get together about. (I can't quite put what I mean into words. I'm sure some of you can do a better job of describing that THING we had...a unifying source? Something that brought us together -- just for fun.) What I have been thinking is: maybe we should try that again. Even if we switched off mags every...say 6 months. We could all get overly excited (ok, well maybe I would)... and race to libraries, stores, our piles of mags... OR maybe just start at the current month and go forward. Hmmm... I would nominate Fine Cooking. Why? Well, it seems to have something for everybody. It's available at most stores. It's not overly worked already in our forum lives. (My second choice is Martha...for same reasons.) If we got too specific, some folks wouldn't be interested...so I didn't nominate Eating Well, or Vegetarian Times, etc. Good Housekeeping, while tested recipes, doesn't it also have lots of unrelated to food stuff? I think yes. Anyway, don't you think we need SOMETHING to turn us on again?? Would we want to continue with CL?? I think, unless you all have other ideas, that a place to start would be Fine Cooking. (And they have special editions, too.) WOULD YOU GET EXCITED? hehe hehe hehe Would that suit everyone? Do we want to do something like this? (Instead of CL, we'd do FC or which another or none?) BTW: I thought about two mags at same time, but that might undo the magic... just a thought.

Well, I think that would be fine (too--would be fun to do sometimes) but what I had in mind was a constant (like Cooking Light used to be)...so that we have lots of time to buy, read, select, buy for, you know...all the things we did. Took time. I'd rather have one or two and stick with them for months...until we change them again. But that's just my own thought...and I just wanted to throw it out there. Dunno if others will want to. . .

I'll sit back and see what others have to say, however, I do like Fine Cooking so if we did go that route I certainly wouldn't be against purchasing an issue or two.

As someone who posted on CL a great deal in its earlier days, but rarely purchased the publication, my impression back then was that it was the common love of cooking which held the CLBB together very possibly more than the magazine did. That said, sure, there were the folks who were totally attuned to CL's philosophy and lifestyle and dove into each issue of the magazine with the enthusiasm of puppies in a basket. For those who really love sharing their thoughts, opinions and discoveries about particular publications I think what you're proposing sounds like a good idea. Like mcgee, being only a sometimes customer of magazines, I'd be inclined to peruse more than contribute (here, you are breathing a sigh of relief, thinking "Thank GOD! Does this woman ever get to the point?") but I'm really pretty boring anyhow.

I don't think we need a magazine, since this is a "Great Food Forum" and we are discussing food. I still subscribe to CL and few other magazines, but I really can't remember the last time I even looked at them. I don't plan on renewing any of them upon expiration. The last few years on the CLBB seemed to have fewer and fewer reviews or even people who were looking at the issues. Once they changed the format of the magazine years ago, it became less appealing, IMHO. I'm still interested in what others have to say.

Yeah but, when I look back at when the old forum was reallllly kicken' it...was back when everybody, besides posting any recipe from anywhere, also had one spot that they could count on that would be talked about, marked up, tagged, drooled over... something to get excited about each new month that a new one came out. Back before they changed the mag...
Anyway, that's just more of what was on my mind about it. I just used to LOVE how excited everybody got. We were like little kids at Christmas. hehehehe .

I agree with cafelatte: when CL was redesigned, they lost me as well. The new mag looked cluttered & mass-market, indistinguishable from the BHG I might peruse while at the dentist's office. I do like Bon Appetit now; I received a free subscription & typically every issue has one to several things I'd like to make. But I would be hard-pressed to buy the mag b/c I'd think of all the cookbooks I have at home already. True, the general love of cooking does unite us, but if you want a magazine focus as well, what about "the X thread" for each one that people like, similar to "The Pumpkin Thread" currently going on for pumpkin recipes? I still think "The Bon Appetit Thread" or "The Eating Well Thread" might be less important than the general recipe posts, however, b/c you'd have to sift through the whole thread to find gems, as opposed to the recipe-focused threads where you can determine the recipe just from the thread title. But it's a thought; I may be in the minority.

I think the idea has merit, but I don't think we really want to lock ourselves into one specific magazine. On the old CLBB, we had the regular monthly issue excitement (before the big redesign) but then we also had a large number of threads devoted to specific cookbooks. I loved both kinds of threads, and as our group grows and we settle in I can see a lot of these things happening naturally anyway.
I think if we get focused on one specific cooking magazine, then we limit the potential of what this forum could grow to be.
I don't see why the magazine and cookbook threads can't just happen organically. If I'm really excited about a particular issue of CL or Eating Well or Fine Cooking or Rachael Ray, I think I would start a thread up and see if anyone else is as excited about this particular issue. I've had my eye out for a new cookbook to get as excited about as I'd been about AYIAVK, HTCEV, Dorie Greenspan's Baking, King Arthur Flour's Whole Grain Baking, and 600 Curries. It would be fun for someone to discover a new find that gets us all cooking together and sharing reviews again.
