Is there any way to make *Politics* read-only with the provision that if you want to post you must register?

That section can't be seen by visitors and can't be seen by members of GFF either, unless they join that group. Hope this answers your question.

Back when we started this forum, some folks complained that they didn't want to have to, on a food forum, wade through political subject lines to get to threads that they might want to read. They made a good case that made sense. So, we made it optional. Members can see, write, whatever ... all they have to do is go to their Profile and the Group tab and opt in. It's an optional group that anyone can view or not. Everybody wins. It works great.

I actually really like how it is currently set up. I have no interest in reading political threads and really like that they are not interspersed amongst the most recently updated threads when I come and visit this site.

Cookieee, I don't see what the problem is. You don't click on any thread you don't want to read. I'm not political, but at times I like to read other opinions. I can choose to ignore them or not. If you join, you can read the posts, but you don't have to participate in the discussion. I don't read/open all the threads as I only open what interests me. This is AMERICA.
BTW - you can join to read that section and then change your mind if you want to. It isn't permanent. I don't think anything has been posted there in a week anyway. Hope that helps.

At first I thought it was unfortunate that the Politics forum had to be private, but at least we had a place to talk. One person, in particular, seemed to be the impetus behind that. It's easy enough to avoid forums you're not interested in, but she seemed convinced her way was the right way. And it wasn't Bev or Brenda. If she's even still posting here I'm not aware of it. Cest la vie!
Cookieee, the forum hasn't been very active. By the time I talk politics on Facebook and GardenWeb I don't really bother to continue here and that's mainly because of the lack of activity. If the forum were public it might be more active. We'll never know.

Thanks Charley, so, in other words, we're not missing anything? lol That just changed.

I just posted a " TIP" on how the Politics board works. I hope this clears up some of the questions.
