BACKING UP IS SO IMPORTANT. I have been reading. I never knew that THUMB DRIVES...in fact, most types of mechanical things that back up our stuff....ARE TEMPORARY. THEY LEAK. (aka DRAIN--die off.) Some quickly go and some take longer...but you never know what yours will do.
So, I have read that we should backup to online services (I have for years), which is safer... or backup to lots of places and different types of ways.
I suggest, if you all back up your stuff, that you do like I did and read up on the subject. (What I read is: flash or thumb drives are NOT for backing up. Transferring stuff perhaps...but not for backing up.)
(I mentioned to my daughter last night and she already knew all this....she is IT person for Microsoft. I barely got the words out to her and she finished my sentence with one word "leaks". She says they have a product that backs up online and to several places (redundancy for protection). Well, I'll look into theirs but I'm betting it is more for biz.
So, yes, I am renewing my online service and this time, I think I will opt for the additional disk they make (for faster loading all my stuff back. I have a terrabyte of stuff backed up. It's mostly my cookbooks, my ebooks, all my Mastercook stuff...a lifetime of my work and my friend's work. I'd be lost of I lost it all. (And I'm constantly reading that it happens to people. One gal in our Mastercook recipe group just posted that she lost ALL of her stuff...her computer fried or died or something., Anyway: it's all gone...she is sad.)

I have a Scandisk (I think that is the name) external drive. We don't back up as frequently as we used to, but enough to have some continuity if we got a crash. YEEEEEEARS ago, microsoft would periodically just die on our computers. After many weepy nights, I switched to gmail for important things. If i have a recipe or something I need, I email myself so regardless of my computer status, I can get into the email account and get important things. That and the external drive.
p.s. wow on your kid working at microsoft. I swear I got gypped in the looks and brains department. And genetics is not that great either, LOL

My laptop is backed up every evening to a backup drive on our home network and the backup drive is backed up every evening to the cloud. I know so many people who don't back up and have lost everything. I had a hard drive failure years ago and because of our backup strategy, I was back up and running with everything in a very short time.
