There MAY come a time when Pro Boards can no longer continue (funding issues) and our Great Food Forum would close. I want to let you know that we COULD survive, but it would be a different structure: an email list group. That would be super easy for me to set up plus I am very familiar with groups like that because they have been in existence for decades now and I belong and have owned several. SO, be thinking about changing our course at some time in the future. You might want to save things from our current postings, just in case we go dark. Yes, I did receive an email from ProBoards folks awhile back. Times are tough everywhere. They are good people. Please contact me PRIVATELY if you would like to talk further about this.

I know a lot of people have left Facebook, but my main reason for being there is a handful of groups. The sourdough and bread baking groups were probably the first ones, but I've joined more for other interests. That would be a easy and free possibility.
I appreciate the possible/maybe no-time frame warning. Would appreciate a time frame more. I can't afford the time drain right now. This site has been less about recipes and such -- more about a connection with a few who shared another time and place and the ability to keep tabs. To send Wallycat good wishes, etc.

*sob* I feel the same about many of you...the connection from the past and just sharing our lives....the good, the bad....

Depends on the advertisers the Pro-Board owners can attract.

Email groups work in similar fashion to Facebook. They have a webpage (that user can elect to sort by thread if they choose to); users can elect NOT to get any email each time someone posts. The post will be at the website.
Only diff I can think of is: email groups do show your email address (on posts). Email groups: you get email of each post AND you can view it at website. You can post to group from either place (your email or directly when online at the website).
Email groups are more private, I believe, in the long run. I can handle an email group, but Facebook I don't use enough to be comfortable enough managing it.

I've been in groups that used email groups before -- none of them lasted very long. If there is much activity, it really becomes an email nightmare and you can't scan to see what is happening. Sounds like you have experience with one where you can -- so that may be better than what I've dealt with.

Yep. I have been member of many email groups for the last coupla decades. I've started/owned/managed a few as well. So, at least I know what I'm doing there, better than I would Facebook. (I, too, belong too a few Facebook groups. But I don't think I'd feel comfortable managing one.) Whereas, email groups, at least, I know I could manage. You don't even have to look at emails. The website itself stores all the posts and you can use the website's Sort feature to make them show by threads or by dates, etc. Easy. Plus there are sections where we can store files (share files/recipes...whatever to be downloaded by anyone who is member). One big feature is that owners/managers have ability (an option) to view each post before it gets published. So management can stop anything or anyone that is not welcomed by group. But, someone ELSE who wants to can always start a Facebook group and I'd be happy to join.

I'm not thrilled with facebook. I belong to a couple groups that are only available there, so minimize my use as much as possible. my facebook account is largely nonsense data. I'm saddened that activity here is shrinking. Never "get" the appeal of facebook. its annoying aggravating and every other negative I could name. no conversations take place unless limited to a very specific topic.

One really nice thing about email groups: totally private within group. Whereas, for instance this group here, our messages can be read around the world. Look in Search engine sometime. So, say we wanted to exchange recipes, or collections of them, we wouldn't worry about restrictions or outside views of our stuff. ALSO: Just because it's called Email group, does not mean you HAVE to receive posts via email. SORTA like this group here (but I cannot remember if here we can opt out of notification emails)...we get something via email...but we can go, via link in email to the WEBSITE. Same with email groups. One can elect to NEVER get email (which means you just to straight to website and never get any notification or post in your email. OR you can elect to get a daily DIGEST of posts...and you can also read them at website...or my preferred way: full email post with link at bottom to go view any or all at website. One other cool thing, email groups have storage at website for FILES. Like: I want to share 55 recipes with group, I can put the file there for any member to download. ONLY MEMBERS get the emails and ONLY MEMBERS have access to the website where our posts and files, etc., reside. For management, it's super easy, too. Closed membership...invite only. No need to check on dozens of applications per week and have to decide if legitimate or spammers or unsuited for group like I do now.

Some of the email groups I've belonged to over the years: Pretty much any Mastercook group (most members own Mastercook recipe software and share recipes or MC software how-to) a) MC formatted recipes - mastercook.groups.io/g/Recipes (I say JOIN and view ONLINE...you will be amazed at all the recipes you can copy out and save.) b) Mastercook software talk only - Eat-G (which was Eat-L) and has been around since late 90's. General food chat/recipes, etc. EAT-G: Foodlore and Recipe Discussion List groups.google.com/a/vt.edu/g/eat-gThe Bake Shop -- This group began 2010 groups.io/g/The-Bake-ShopTNT: Tested recipes ONLY. Group been going for decades. Living Cookbook (recipes mostly) - I quit when the software developer went dark and the program no longer was supported, updated, etc. All purchases stopped when owner disappeared. List owner died. (AHA, I see a new LC group started a few years back: groups.io/g/LivingCookbookRecipes)I'll add more info (and maybe addresses) as I get time, if folks are interested.
