We see fresh whole mackerel at our local grocer but I also see a lot of recipes calling for "Spanish" mackerel. Some sources say either fish can be cooked in the same manner; others say they aren't interchangeable. What do you smart cooking folks think? Yes, all mackerel is strong and oily which we value. I will appreciate all responses.

Thank you! I see both at my Korean market. I think I'll get one of each and give it a trial run. The regular mackerel is $2.99/lb and Spanish mackerel is $4.99/lb, both whole. Our favorite Japanese restaurant recently added mackerel sushi at $1.00 per piece and it's so yummy if, like us, you like fish that tastes like fish.

We love the taste of fish. Once upon a time I could ride my bike down to the little harbor and buy fresh from the day's catch. Please let us know how your recipe turned out!

I've purchased canned mackerel but no idea which one it is. I'll have to see if I have a can left to read the ingredients; some places are starting to list the latin name. Report back. I love fish!! Shark was the only fish I wasn't wild about, but i would eat it again if it were served.

Shark was the only fish I wasn't wild about, but i would eat it again if it were served. We have a can of mackerel in the pantry, but I have no idea what variety it is. Given the incredible panic buying at our local stores, I'll be grateful for whatever I can find be it canned or fresh. As a high-risk person (over 60) I'm supposed to distance myself but we need fresh foods. I don't have a chest freezer so we are limited on what we can stock. I'll let you know what the canned mackerel tastes like. Tonight we had crackers and a tin of herring in tomato sauce which was wonderful; I think it was the Aldi brand. I'd get more of that for sure, but our Aldi closed at 4 yesterday afternoon because they had NO inventory; there was a line an hour before opening today and again, I'm supposed to socially distance. I'm with you on the shark thing; I had it but it was not a favorite.

We went to Walmart in Sequim on Tuesday and the shelves were sad looking. Costco seemed fine. We have 3 freezers (one chest) with venison. I always have canned sardines, tuna, salmon so that is great. Flour for baking bread, etc. I wish I had thought about canned fruits and veggies because I usually do have fresh. I'm over 60 and DH is on immune suppressors for his cancer, and nearly 80, so it is a tough thing to think about.
