food52.com/blog/24032-best-butter-for-baking-unsalted-american-style-taste-testScroll to the very bottom of the article, if you are interested in reading reader's comments. For me, it was an interesting read, but only one of the brands, Land 'O Lakes, is sold in my shopping area. In our area my butter of choice is normally $5.00 per pound, but is the grocers frequent "loss leader" at half price.

I've not tried any but the Land O'lakes, and TJ would be the only other available to me. Vital Pasture and KerryGold are good. Costco organic is also good. I use butter so rarely that I probably am not a good judge. Rumiano is the next one I want to try that is grass fed.

My "everyday" butter is Kate's Homemade Butter, which is made in Maine. I'm not sure if it is available outside of New England. (Kate's is also my choice for buttermilk.) I sometimes splurge on European butter. Like many of the commenters on the article, i use salted butter in my (limited) baking. I do like trying other butters when I see them. I grew up on Land o Lakes butter, but once I was on my own and started trying different brands, I never went back to the Land o Lakes from my childhood. I've never seen Breakstone's butter. I can get all the others mentioned in the article, but even when I've tried others, I always come back to Kate's.

Interesting reading - especially the comments. For baking I finally caved in and now use unsalted butter (Land) after reading long articles explaining why NOT salted butter. For occasionally spreading on freshly baked bread I would choose unsalted Kerrygold. That flavor has a lot to do with nostalgia.

That was an interesting article, definitely regionally based testing, and I always love perusing the readers comments. People get so feisty about such small things. Of the brands they listed, only Land o Lakes is available in my area. Nearest TJ is 150 miles away. I've used Kerrygold and didn't really notice it adversely affected my baking, but I wasn't baking much at the time either. I was ordering a brand from CA (Sierra Nevada Creamery I think?) that was made from pasture raised cows like Kerrygold, but we stopped because pick-up day wasn't working for the Husband. So, right now my butter of choice is Organic Valley (unsalted) from our co-op. I think it's about $6-7 a pound. Makes good chocolate chip cookies.

I bought package of Kerry gold, and at least one other "upscale" butter. I don't care much for butter myself, but DH likes it and has what I'd call a very sensitive palate. he didn't think there was any significant difference in flavor. I can at least taste salted butter while unsalted seems flavorless. I use salted for everything without a problem. recipes asking for unsalted, I use salted and decrease other added salt. mostly I am happy to have one product in the frig rather than two. it always seemed to me like a rip off.
