This is a thread that is for everyone who may want to discuss "diets", as we did on the weight watchers thread on the other BB. There were only a few of us left, and we really were't following the plan any longer, especially with the changes and app/site problems that were made to it over the last couple of years, but it was still a place to come and discuss what was and wasn't working. I was successful on the WW plan and lost and have maintained that loss over the last 3 or 4 years. I learned that portion control is the key, weighing or measuring food. I hope to see some of the regulars from the other board here, but also some "new faces". I find that it's easier to eat healthy during the summer months and it's a little more difficult over the winter months. I hope to see you join.
Val, greek salad, EmptyNestMom, LakeMartinGal, dcollier (if you find us), soupsandstew (I hope I got your names right), and others. Hope to see you!

Hi caffe latte! Valerie here. so good to "see " you here. I've seen everyone but denise so far. I guess she retired from everything at once. Hope she is still doing well. Maybe she will find us. I haven't posted much as we were on vacation and have some more time coming up. I ate too much on my last vacation and the jeans are tighter again so I have reason to be here.

Hello everyone, Pat here. DH and I still wrestle with the weight & activity issues everyday. I didn't post too often, but lurked and have always appreciated the wisdom I found. I'll be back here!

Good to see you guys here. I wanted to start the thread to see who was around and if there was still interest in it. Hopefully we can get more members to join us too. I am back from vacation now, and even though I didn't do any real damage to the scale, I know I need to get back to my old ways of tracking. We were in Waikiki for a week and we walked a lot, so that was what really helped. Tracking on my phone, we got 8 - 10 miles a day in with walks, and that's more than I do on my treadmill at home. I told DH I needed to move to Waikiki as I'd always be outside. Val, from the sounds of it, I don't think Denise has computer access at home. I sent her a PM just before the old board closed down so that it would go to her email (if she ever sees it) with the link to this thread in the title and letting her know the board is closed. Hopefully one day when she takes a break from retired life, she knows where we are.

I hope to participate on this thread. I lost a lot of weight back in 1996 and kept it off until about three years ago and now I must do something about it. Hopefully you guys will be an inspiration for me.

Hopefully you guys will be an inspiration for me. Welcome mcgee! I hope you join in and tell us what works and doesn't work for you. I followed WW, used the app religiously and tracked everything I ate, the best I could. I also kept a small notebook where I wrote what I ate for each meal, one day a page. That way, I could go back and look over days weeks or months that I was most successful and follow that again. This helps since when you no longer subscribe to the program, you lose your tracking. I need to dig up those notebooks again. I've used other apps as well to track, and I need to start doing that again. I haven't regained, but it helps keep my focus on eating better.

Welcome mcgee..... the more the merrier. I did better with tracking. right now I track my exercise on a paper calendar. still not formally tracking food but am sticking to a basic plan. complex carbs, vegies, fruit, beans, nuts, fish, blsl chicken breasts. I tried adding in a few chopped walnuts to my breakfast oatmeal, and promptly gained a pound or two. so annoying. anything extra, even good nutritious calories, does not help fat leave the area.

Thanks for the welcome. I think my diet will officially start Sunday but I'm not going to weigh myself for at least another week. My biggest problem is the lack of exercise. When I used to work in an office I went to aerobics after work at least 3 - 4 times a week. I've been working from home now for about two years and exercise has become non-existent and I used to love it. We recently moved and we now have a community pool so DH and I try and go in the evening. I have a shoulder issue so can't really do the crawl anymore but I do a modified breast stroke and hop back and forth from one end to the next. We also have bikes and need to get out and use those again!!!

Mcgee I'm the resident bicyclist. DH and I ride a couple times a week. road bikes or mt bikes. also have an indoor spin bike. all are good exercise, easy on the joints. we ride a trail open to bikes, walkers, horses. less risky than riding in traffic. I don't like swimming and have no pool access anyway but whatever works for you! I use exercise DVD's regularly. It's easier to stick in a disk and just follow the script. find someone who isn't annoying to work out to, and at a level of intensity that works for you currently. DH and I hike and xc ski too. There are many reasons to work out a way to exercise at home. it's convenient. don't need to drive anywhere. no need to dress up. no one cares what you look like. I used to belong to a gym, but after a few months it got inconvenient to go, and excuses start popping up... someone is on the equipment you want.... the music is annoying...etc. I like being able to do a workout while dinner is in the oven, or while the wash is running. I have been working out most of my life.

That way, you know if what you are doing has been a kick start. Just my opinion. I basically weigh daily because it helps me correct my ways before they get out of hand. Just my two cents. As for exercise, walks are a great start. Not sure what type of area you live in, but walking around the neighborhood, even for 30 minutes can be 2+ miles.

I signed up for a 3 mile walk Oct 1. I have become totally sedentary over the last year so it won't be pretty but I need to do this on a personal and spiritual level. I've also signed up for a 2 mile walk in November.

Hope you guys decide to post here. I decided today is the day I was going to start tracking food again. I always used Thursdays as my official weigh in day, so why not start now. I decided to stick with my WW-type app, Ultimate Food Value Diary. I think it still follows the old PP program, but that is what I was used to. When WW changed their plan last year, I signed up again to see what the new program was about, but didn't really care for it as much. This app only costs a few bucks from what I remember, and there is not monthly fee such as with the WW app.
One thing I need to do is get back to making sure I am drinking a min of 64 oz of water regularly. Some days I do, others I don't, but I need to make sure I do as it's really the only thing I drink, besides coffee in the morning. I also need to get a new food scale - I have 3, but none of them seem to be functioning well. I was hoping that Costco would have one, but I haven't seen any in a long time.
How is everyone else doing?

caffe latte... where do you find the app you're talking about? I am about done with vacation and would also like to start tracking again.
I track exercise, but not using a system that gives points or anything. just a paper calendar, log in what I did and for how long. I'm not tracking food on paper or electronically. I never got the updated WW program to work at all last year so am a little skeptical about re entering that program. I found it very hard to get vegetarian meals counted in at reasonable point values, where as on PP, it worked pretty well. the new program seemed to make it unlikely to include grains and beans very often, and that is a diet mainstay for me. I eat a little fish and blsl chicken breasts but that's it for "meat".

I might check out the premium version at some point, but this is the app I was using a lot when I stopped using the WW app. It's been updated recently too. www.ultimatevaluediary.com/If you have an iphone, their health app has been updated recently and tracks so much more than I remember it tracking. I think you can track your cycling in it automatically. I carry mine everywhere now so it tracks steps, flights of stairs, etc. The best part is you don't have to enter anything. Even if it is off bit, it gives you a general idea of what you are doing.

Val, If that app doesn't cut it for you, there are so many out there.
I've been diligent about tracking and keeping the points between 27 and 33 per day (I get 26 Daily and 49 Weekly, as the old program). I'm going to pay the extra 99 cents to try the premium for a month. I think it's 9.99 for the year, but I'd rather see what it's about first. I don't remember a premium option when I used the app before.

Hi There Peeps - First post.
I also lost a lot of weight but with decreasing activity, gained it back so I am doing WW.
I really really like their new Smart Points program as it enables me to eat in the way I naturally lean towards. Fruits and vegetable are 0 points. The points for lean protein has also been lower while points for "treats" with sugar have gone up. So it really steers one towards eating well since one can enjoy a great lunch of a VERY stuffed turkey sandwich, for example. A VERY large portion really is filling. There is incentive to nosh on fruits or veggies.
I am doing it online but I am also using their Personal Coach option which is also great. You pick a coach and you can schedule a call for as many times as you want. I am only doing it once a week but it really centers me to have someone to whom I really am "reporting" in. Not that she is an authority personality but it makes me accountable so that I don't drift and rationalize as much.
Their on line tracking program makes it super easy to track points and fitness etc.
At least in my opinion, well worth the money.

Welcome amarante - so glad you decided to join. WW is a great program and it does work. I used online exclusively myself for a few years. When they changed over to the program you are using, a lot of people had problems with the apps and the websites from what I remember. They must have gotten the kinks worked out of it by now. Since I am maintaining, I find I can use a similar app that doesn't have the monthly costs associated with it.
Hope everyone is doing well.

Welcome, Amarante good to see you here.
I was one of the people who failed at WW last fall when they went live with the new program. oh my, nothing worked. and if it worked, it erased itself. I got an extra month or 6 weeks free but it still wasn't working. I did well on points plus. the newer program is not very friendly to carbs, complex or not. I need beans and grains and the point values shot way up. I eat mostly vegetarian with a little chicken and fish thrown in. I found "light" meals were ending up at 10-12 points, things that had been more like 6-7 on PP.
I am changing up some things in my exercise program. I exercise almost every day but am finding steady state cardio seems to work better for me than all the newer higher intensity workouts.

Makes sense to me because I am just the opposite as I do best with lean protein, lots of veggies, fruits. and a small amount of even complex carbs. I keep the carbs to no more than four servings a day - i.e. a sandwich on whole wheat bread. Therefore the points calculation which has very low points for protein makes it really easy for me to follow. I did get into trouble during cherry season and when I discovered cotton candy grapes. Even though fruit is theoretically 0 points, it was just too easy for me to gorge myself on these "finger foods". If anyone hasn't discovered cotton candy grapes, try them. They're quite a hoot although I am not sure if they are still in season.

amarante, I've tried those grapes and they are good, but I haven't seen them recently though. DH is the one who eats most of the grapes - I find the acid or tannins in them doesn't always agree with me for some reason.
Even though WW states 0 points for fruits and veggies, I think with previous program they suggested to limit to 9 servings total. I would gorge on watermelon and end up gaining weight because I just ate too much. I remember reading that if you followed the program and aren't losing, or are gaining, adjust the amount of fruit you are eating.
val, good that you figured out what type of cardio works for you. I still prefer walking at different speeds.

I am pooped!. we are getti ng some bad weather coming tomorrow so will check back in when I can. sounds like "power out" time.

Val, what a bummer that was for you. I can imagine how cautious you will be from now on. Good that they caught the guy since it probably wasn't his first time stealing, and would not be his last.
It's been beautiful weather here - the leaves are starting to change color, but many are still green. We have a maple that is half red right now, but among other green trees, it looks beautiful and stands out. We had a patio put in and have an area where we put some adirondak chairs and fire pit. We used it one night to try out, but hopefully will again this weekend if it continues clear. Maybe we will even make some smores. Haven't had those in ages.
Hope everyone is doing well.

we survived the first storm yesterday with only losing a couple trees and our TV antenna. it was very wet and windy. trees still have a lot of leaves so that didn't help. today will be more of the same, maybe worse, maybe not. since the storm track is along the coast, it's not certain what to expect, except more wind and rain. I think they are backing off of the extreme wind, but we will wait and see what happens.
caffe latte I will take a look at the app when things settle down. we've had a bad stretch here lately. meantime, I'm eating carefully and exercising most days. heading downstairs for a workout shortly.

I'm still not tracking. I guess I hate to do it and right now I don't have time to do all the recipe calculations. yes I know, excuses, excuses. I am (every day) exercising, and eating Ok, very little junk. but that doesn't amount to weight loss for me. so stable.
caffe latte we are in the early stages, power, septic, well. our driveway needed some work before the bigger trucks could access. we don't expect to be done until late spring at the earliest. depends on how the winter weather is. they work all year but not as fast and there are more weather related delays. we are not on any actual schedule. it will be done when it's done, or something like that.
we are doing projects at our current house . needed to replace a garden retaining wall that is proving way more work than we expected. Big heavy landscape bricks, 60 pounders. and a few loads of gravel.

Just wanted to bump this up. I hope everyone is doing well. Hopefully there is still some interest in this thread. I am going to try my best to eat the healthiest I can between now and Christmas. I just feel sluggish after Thanksgiving, and I didn't pig out by any means. It's just this time of year I find I eat mindlessly and want to snack. I hate that it's dark earlier and I am not outside like during the summer months. I guess food is on my mind more than it has been in the past as well. I've also been lazy about walking on the treadmill, and I need to get back into that as well.

In honor of the new year, maybe we can take advantage of the usual diet/exercise mania that will descent upon us in January.
I "re-signed" up for WW Dec 20th. I do very well tracking exercise. I missed only 3 days in December, 2days jury duty, the other xmas day. It's rewarding to have the big calendar hanging on the wall and watch month after month fill up! It works WAY better for me than electronic points.
WW is working pretty well. I don't like the points being so high on my more "carb centered" choices but I am tracking and sticking with it. I have been hungry most nights. t that seems to be what it takes. right now I'm focused on "working" winter vegies and getting some new ideas into the line up. I have a few turnip things I like. right now working on Brussels sprouts. I made the one posted on the food section, roasted sprouts with pears. the WW program is completely different from the version I wrestled with last winter. I need to weigh in this morning so we'll see if I'm still happy! the program works well.
ETA ... not especially happy. my jeans feel looser but scale not showing progress.
