Any good? (Taste of Home) I have never been much interested in any of their publications but just bought: Taste of Home HOLIDAY COOKIES & CANDIES which I could not walk away from! Comments? Thanks.

Any good? (Taste of Home) I have never been much interested in any of their publications but just bought: Taste of Home HOLIDAY COOKIES & CANDIES which I could not walk away from! Comments? Thanks. I've tried some of their recipes on the Web, Catbatty, and many of them were decent, but I've never bought any of their publications. I think their magazine has a pretty high circulation, though.

Loved going down to their test kitchen and store when I lived in WI. I too have tried many of their recipes and find them decent. Down-home type cooking and used to be without a lot of fancier/newer ingredients. I've purchased some of the bound annuals...but geeze, haven't cooked out of a real book or magazine in ages since internet blogs, mags and such are available so easily on computers.

I didn't know that they have a test-kitchen. That's a good sign. Do they say that they test every recipe? Loved going down to their test kitchen and store when I lived in WI. I don't recall that they say that...which doesn't mean they don't but I didn't pay attention **blush**

I feel like TOH recipes are hit or miss. Some are excellent, some are not great, but really you get that with any magazine or publication. I currently subscribe because I got a really good deal for several years worth. When I get an issue, I flip through it and note any recipes that stand out to me, and then I hand it to my daughter. What I really like about TOH is that the recipes are from home cooks and almost always do-able by a home cook. So it's a great magazine to hand to my teenage daughter as she learns the ins and outs of cooking. She's chosen a few recipes here and there to make and so far all of them have been good. The only drawback is that these recipes ARE from home cooks, so sometimes you read a recipe through and wonder where on earth they came up with such a strange combination! I'm pretty sure they test all the recipes and only publish the ones that are deemed good. I used to check the annuals out at my library and go through them.

With grandkids selling magazine subscription for their school I decided to give TOH a try last year. Have a couple of good recipes (from Joe's blog?) and had high hopes. Sadly I didn't find a single recipe that appealed to me so I have not renewed my subscription. One explanation might be that I'm only looking for savory dishes, preferably fish, which we love. My files are already bursting with recipes for cakes, cookies and sweet stuff - most of them yet to be tried.
