Things have slowed down to a snail's pace around here. I'm surprised that the Pro-Boards owner hasn't shut us down. It appears we have run our course. What should we do next?
My Pref: create a mailing list...
I am currently (and for the past decades) a member of several 'mailing list' groups. (Mailing list groups are different than public website type groups.I really like them and love collecting and chatting about the recipes that people share there. There is far less worry about copyright infringement, for one thing and one reason is that there are fewer rules and regs regarding those. (Each owner, the person who puts tog the group and moderates it, gets to make the rules they see fit...in other words, more control AND I FORGOT TO MENTION: IT'S TOTALLY FREE AND GROUP IS BEHOLDING TO NOBODY.)
I think we could join an existing group (or groups) or we could form our own. THEN, we would not be costing any owners fees for keeping us online, nor for upkeep, profits, etc. If we prefer to make our own group, I am able to create a private group and maintain it.
(Yes, we did try mailing list...as a temp home right after CLBB shut down, and I got the impression that past CLBB members were ducks out of water, not being used to whatever a mailing list was all about. That was my impression. That those people had grown used to the way online forums work, but had little history with the kinds of groups I'd been so much into.) BUT...
I feel we need to do something because this space IS costing the ProBoard owner(s) money and we aren't carrying our weight to justify the cost for staffing, space costs, etc. He/she has to sell advertising in order to cover these expenses and I think attracting advertisers must be hard to do for groups that are barely alive with new posts. We have the option to have our members PAY but I think the costs would be pretty high considering we don't have that many active members. SO, I think we should go to the other sharing/posting method that I personally think offers us many more advantages:
1) privacy (the world doesn't access our posts in a mailing group if the person who sets the group up restricts viewing to MEMBERS ONLY
2) copyright infringement is not the heavy concern that it is for owners of public groups (e.g., strict rules and concerns about legalities)
3) mailing lists CAN HAVE storage online for extra files/photos that members want to put up for sharing or viewing, even whole FILES can be stored
4) all member POSTS remain online, for viewing at any time by members
5) PLUS members have the option to also receive posts to their phones or computers
6) members can post to group from their phones or computers OR by going to the group site online
7) owner/manager has far easier time managing the various parts of the group.
I realllllly like foodie recipes groups that are called 'mailing lists' and IF you miss getting more recipes in this existing group, I think you will be happier. I would put together a group that is private/members only. (Not sure if members would see each others email addresses or not. In smaller private groups, I've never know that to be a problem. IF it is for you, you could always setup an email account strictly for that group, e.g., a gmail account.
What you think? And NO, the owner of Pro Boards has not hollered at me. He wrote me awhile back, mentioning that he has staff of 9 to pay, etc...and very kindly and nicely mentioned that we could pay. I feel strongly that he has been wonderful to us, allowing us to continue but I don't feel right about not carrying our weight in the deal. PLUS, I would love to have a more private group where I could control who sees in.
