We seem to be invited to a lot of potlucks where we're asked to bring an 'American' food dish. Today was a coffee group at the school - I brought banana bread and Southern-style cheese biscuits. Other offerings from the US were donuts (Dunkin Donuts!), rice crispy treats, and brownies. Last week at a playdate, I served hotdogs (Ikea hotdogs, but close enough), corn on the cob, and watermelon. Later this week is an end of school party and I'll likely make banana mini-muffins since I know my kid will eat them.
So my question: What would you bring to an international potluck to represent the USA?

Hmm... I'd probably go with choc chip cookies or apple pie/apple crisp or something similar. Here's some ideas (not sure how "American" they all might be).... smores, fried chicken, lemon meringue pie ?, boston creme pie, cornbread. For some reason I'm thinking of barbecue foods, coleslaw, potato salad, buffalo wings. Texas sheet cake (well it has TX in the name). Red Velvet cake? Key lime pie or something similar, devils food cake, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches ? Anything with ranch dressing (ha).
These might be more east coast ..... IMO way too much work but just for some ideas.... black and white cookies.
Some not for a potluck/what you have in mind but tossing it out since might give other ideas .... fried clams, lobster, barbecue, deep dish pizza, cobb salad.
Oh that tunnel cake that was famous in the 50s or 60's ??
Something with maple?
So not a fan, but I'll list it, jello salad. : )
Have fun! Hope you are enjoying your new home! I'll post more if I think of anything.
Clearly I'm in the mood for dessert

BBQ is classic. Baked beans are more east coast but always considered a picnic item. Pizza is now more americanized than the traditional Italian pizzas. Burgers, slaw, mac & cheese, buffalo wings, Cobb salad (but not sure how eager a kid would be to eat it), Reuben sandwiches, a pot of chili, ribs, meatloaf, grilled cheese sandwiches, deviled eggs or egg salad sandwiches, 3-bean salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, clam chowder, fried chicken, pancakes, turkey & pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, popcorn, pot-roast, banana splits, crab-cakes, potato chips, BLT sandwiches, cobbler,

The first two things that came to mind were Macaroni and Cheese, Hot Dogs and Apple pie, which applecrisp already mentioned. There is Gumbo, Jambalaya, Ozark Pudding, Kentucky (aka Southern) Green Beans, Cheese Grits casserole, Philly Cheese Steak, corn-on-the-cob. There is Anadama Bread and Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, New York Cheesecake, and anything Creole or Cajun. There are many cheeses from different states (Wisconsin, Vermont, etc.). Any fruit pudding that is called a Buckle, Grunt, or Slump. Shoo-Fly Pie. Don't forget southern favorites, Pimento cheese and Sweet Tea.

How did I forget mac and cheese. Insert shocked emoji! Kind of fun to think of some ideas -- some not for a potluck or kids but I'll add anyway, and who knows if all American type foods .... stuffing, pecan pie, hush puppies, ice cream cake?, ice cream sandwiches (between two choc chip cookies too), onion rings, Mississippi Mud Pie, that onion dip that used to be at practically all parties years back, fudge, salt water taffy, oatmeal cookies, strawberry short cake. (sorry if repeats)
Some let's not take credit for, ha (not sure if started here, but mentioning anyway)..... cotton candy, candied apples, peeps, corn dogs, spray cheese. Ha!. A big no IMO to SPAM.
And for some nostalgia types... something topped with those canned onion rings or crushed potato chips. twice baked potatoes, sloppy joes , tuna melt: ) Ok just had to mention.
And its own category, tater tots!
Ketchup : )
