Our GE Profile side-by-side is leaking water. We would repair it but both DH and I HATE it. It came with the house - much to our disappointment - so we thought we'd keep it as long as it continued to function despite our hatred for it. Well, with this water leakage issue we have decided it's time to replace it. Also, the freezer side is so dang small you can't even fit a frozen pizza in there without taking it out of the box and the shelves keep falling. Just a poorly designed appliance all around in my opinion. Soooo, our Christmas gift this year will be a new fridge. What do you have that you like and what do you recommend staying away from? I know a lot of people have the freezer on the bottom (which is my first preference) and love it but I have a girlfriend that absolutely hates it. She said she's tired of rooting around for everything in there - I could say that about our side-by-side. I'm anxious to get some recommendations from you all as we'll be shopping this weekend .

Our Amana with bottom freezer has served us well for 12 years. Did a lot of research before buying and this one had great reviews back then. Never had a problem finding what's in the freezer but friend complains about having to bend down to get ice cubes. For me it would be bend down to retrieve things from bottom of fridge that I open more often.

We are madly in love with our 4 door Samsung. We've owned it for a few years. I love how the two "French" doors at the top can be opened at once and everything in there is on display (and lights come on that remind me of a jet plane runway...I don't know why...but I love the lights. AND, even if opening only one of those two doors, there is lots of room/view/access to contents. Oh, and the doors have deep shelves and lots of them. THOSE, in any fridge, are a must for me. (Long story...battled with husband for years..trying to get him to listen to me about why those are so important--him rushing me to buy...when first married...a side-by-side without them. HATED IT and seethed over that for years...secretly. But I'm over it now, maybe, and I FINALLY got my WAY when buying one I shopped for ALONE!!!! Lesson learned: LEAVE HUSBAND AT HOME WHEN SHOPPING FOR APPLIANCES. They can become toooo controlling...because, I think they JUST WANT you to DECIDE and they RUSH you. That's part of it. Just leave them out period, is my opinion. Sorry men/husbands. Ok, I'm still mad at my perfect and awesome husband over that.) I love the middle drawer. I use it normally for things like tortillas, butter, cheese, misc stuff...but when I have a large casserole or pizza, for instance, I move everything to the side and make room for the large pan or cookie sheet, etc. The freezer has two drawers...top one is where we keep ice...no problems getting to it. (There is also a door ice/water dispenser but we haven't hooked those up.) IF we have to buy again, say if we move, we will buy this same model again for sure. (We have owned many refrigerators...many side-by-sides (hate em) and this French door type fridge beats them all. LOVE LOVE LOVE. (Also, we did buy protection and used it once...Geek Squad. Something needed replacement...newer part. Happy with Geek, but thought it was something that should be covered regardless of whether we'd bought warranty or not. Perhaps they would have offered, I dunno.) No matter what...even if we'd have had to buy the part, I'd buy same fridge and I'd pay whatever. It's so completely wonderful to be IN LOVE with your refrigerator. That one appliance seems to be the most used (and visited/experienced) in the kitchen--daily. Gotta be in love, I say. PS: We have a full freezer in garage...so can't realistically say what I would think of the bottom freezer. Seems to be fine for us and we keep favored things in it. Kinda piled up. But it's not like we are constantly looking for things in it. AND we don't store lots of meats, so those aren't taking up space. How much do you use the freezer? That might be an important consideration.

This house came with an LG French door (freezer on the bottom) and it isn't horrible. I don't really use the ice cubes/water dispenser except during fishing season. When we lived in WI and I had a basement (man, do I miss it!), I had a huge freezer chest and then bought an all refrigerator (Whirlpool) for the kitchen. It worked well for us then. I have a small chest freezer in the laundry room now, so I don't care how big the fridge freezer is.
I guess if you use your freezer a lot, you'll be bending down to look at the bottom freezer. With a side-by-side, you're always bending down for the fridge or the freezer.
GardenWeb used to be a great site for appliance reviews but I think it isn't as good since it became Houze(sp?)....still may have some info there.
If you use the dispensers, GE is making a new one with a hot dispenser (for oatmeal, tea, blah, blah)....not sure if that's just a problem waiting to happen.

I have a Whirlpool Gold with freezer on the bottom. I have space restrictions where I put the refrigerator so I did not have a lot of choices but I really do like it. I much prefer the freezer on the bottom to my old one which was top freezer. I would go for bottom freezer again if this one ever goes while we are still in our house. When I was looking years back, I was not happy with side by side or French door models. In my dream world I would have a sub zero or something similar but alas....too much money and too big for the spot it has to fit into. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. Reviews for every brand seem to be a mixed bag but I think I’ll definitely go with the bottom freezer so thanks for helping me make that decision. We’ll probably go to Lowe’s or Home Depot tomorrow. If anyone else wants to chime in I’m all ears

We have 2 refrigerators, one in our house, one in a vacation cabin. Our house has a new side by side. ( bad water leak while we were gone) sections are narrow. could not put a frozen pizza in there. maybe a PIECE of pizza. it's a whirlpool. I have a separate garage freezer because it does not hold anything large. that is the space available due to island in kitchen. It isn't perfect but it works well and we are limitred to a side by side of this size.
the cabin I made sure there was room. got a French door bottom freezer. it is nice to have the width so you are not jockeying things past each other to get to what is behind. much easier to see and find things. has a bottom freezer. It's not perfect but much prefer it to the narrow side by side because it is wide and everything doesn't fall out of the freezer when you pull a package out.
the side by side has thru the door water and ice. I use it a lot because our water supply is over chlorinated and it is so nice not to smell it in drinking water. I did not do that in the cabin because of chance of a leak if we are not there for a while.

I've never had a fridge I have loved, nor do I know anyone that loves their fridge. I have a Samsung french door, freezer on bottom (4 door total) that we have right now that works well and serves our needs. Last house we had a side by side 42" Kitchen-Aid that looked great, worked fine, but was shallow and limited to what you could store in it. We've always had an spare fridge in the garage or basement as well. I find there is never enough drawer space for fruit and veggies. We've never had a fridge die - had one for over 20 years we used as a spare and finally got rid of it because it was an energy drain. My sister has a Sub Zero that's needed to be service several times and the water/ice dispenser comes out at the back corner and always causes a mess. I just go out an see what there is, what you think will work for you and not give it a second thought. My idea of a perfect fridge, size wise, would be a commercial one, similar to but without glass doors.
