I bought a honeynut squash at my local farmers market this week. I've never seen this type of squash before. Of course that means the next time I'm shopping i will see it everywhere.
It is a smaller version of the buttenut squash --- this one is about the size of ones palm, and they say sweeter and has more of a squash flavor than the big ol' butternut.
Has anyone tried it? I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet -- probably just cut it up, toss in some oil and roast. Perhaps use in a salad or......

I heard about it on a podcast I listened to last week. And then saw them at the market so I bought one. My husband will eat squash, but he doesn't love it, so I'm figuring it will be a good way for me to get one or two servings of squash. I plan to roast it. (Roasted butternut squash with sage and red grapes is a big fav of mine. Great at dinner but I also love it for breakfast.)

PattiA -- Unless I'm using squash in specific recipe, like a soup, I don't buy it often since sometimes too much if I'm just cooking for myself. And no complaints that it this squash will be much easier to cut since so much smaller. I've bought the pre-cut buttenut a couple of times but sometimes the texture is off.
Do you roast the grapes along with the squash or do you add it later? I've used grapes in savory type dishes before and really liked it. I've never bought/cooked with sage before -- I don't even know what it tastes like/flavor. Thx for the recipe idea.

Love honeynut! Discovered it last year. I cut in half lengthwise, scoop out seeds, brush cut surface with olive oil, then roast face side down at 350 for about 30 minutes. Serve with a bit of butter.

Whole Foods carried them last year and has them again this year as does TJ's. I don't find a huge difference between these and butternut (in taste) but they are nice for when you only need a small quantity of butternut squash, for example, in a soup etc.... Then they are very convenient. They are tasty, BTW, just not a huge change from butternut IMHO.

I roasted the squash last night and it was very good. The smaller size is super convenient, and it was so much easier to cut too. will certainly buy again and I will look out for them in TJ's, WF, my farmers market.....
