I'm not sure if anyone here is in the cone of uncertainty for TS Harvey over the next few days. If you are, hunker down, cook good stuff, and let us know if you are okay. I'm in Houston and the forecasts are uncertain. I think we're going to get a LOT of rain between now and Sunday so tomorrow we're laying in the groceries and alcohol. Our wonderful part of the world gets significant street flooding at the drop of a hat so I want to be prepared.

Be safe...my kids are in San Antonio so probably won't feel too much from the TS but could get rain...I'll have to call and talk to them...John is a meteorologist (and as a side used to be a TV weather person) and should be able to determine if it will be rainy...

They are still saying it will be primarily a rain event except along the coast which will also feel the winds. However, the forecast rainfall totals are pretty scary and will cause widespread residential flooding across the city if it stays on the forecast track. At this point we're not planning to put up our hurricane shutters but might secure some of the stuff in the yard because 45-55 mph can turn yard art into an airborne missile

The coastal areas and Corpus Christi are in a very, very bad place. Here in SW Houston it will probably be a significant flooding event and I anticipate that we will be trapped in our homes by flooded streets from Sunday through Thursday????? No one really knows b/c the models are changing by the hour. Harvey doesn't have good steering currents, the ridge of pressure above us is trapping the system and our urban drainage system goes to Galveston Bay where the onshore currents and surges will reduce the outflow of storm waters. Ain't gonna be pretty but folks come together during a crisis in ways they don't at other times. Just talked to neighbor who bought a new chest freezer in anticipation of hunting season, and filled it with bags of ice to help us all out if we lose power

My part of the world dodged a really big bullet because the storm track moved further west than originally thought. The coastal community of Rockport was devastated, and some Houston suburbs experienced tornadoes. Many areas still face the very real possibility of significant flooding and more tornadoes during the days ahead. I am so grateful that, barring a tornado embedded in a storm cell, me and mine will be okay. Right now we are experiencing an extremely severe rainstorm. Upside of all this is reduced electric and water bills.

Virtually every street and highway in Houston and the surrounding communities is flooded and tens of thousands of homes as well. It really is as bad as the national news says, maybe worse. The extent of the damage is almost incomprehensible. It is truly the worst event here in living memory. Fortunately although we are pretty much marooned on a little island here for now, we've had a break in the rain which has allowed some water to run off. My house has not yet been at risk of flooding (I say as yet because there's talk of 2 more days of heavy rains) so I'm feeling very, very fortunate. We have electric power and the municipal water supply is good. Biggest danger for me right now is going stark raving mad! The tornado warnings go off periodically and I'm getting tired of sitting in the hallway for 20 minutes at a time.

Thank you. The rains just started up again really heavy but this afternoon's break may help a lot. Complicating the equation is an announcement from local reservoirs that they will begin controlled releases. On an intellectual level I can comprehend the science behind this (release in a controlled manner prevents disastrous uncontrolled breaches) but the other side of my brain knows that just means more water in places we can't handle it.

SoupandStew please keep us updated as the storm/rain continues for next couple of days. I am glad that you are safe as of now...We had weather channel on most of the weekend and it looked like many people were helping with rescues...
Is there anyone else from Texas participating on this forum? Just curious...

SoupandStew - hope you're still doing okay - please let us know. It's just heartbreaking to see all the devastation and wondering if it's ever going to end.
Emptynest - I was wondering the same thing. I know there used to be quite a few from Houston on the old board but don't know if they moved over here but are remaining incognito. I believe Beth is from Texas but not certain where.
If anyone from Houston is reading these boards, please let us know how you're doing.

Update tonight. In my immediate neighborhood water in streets receded, came up again and then receded again. Really grateful for no tornado warnings in last 24 hours. Still very few houses flooded here - maybe 10 out of 7000 - so no complaints. News for all of Houston area is getting worse with mandatory evacuations of many more areas as communities flood from controlled releases and rising rivers, particularly the Brazos. Death toll is rising with the waters but over 2,000 high water rescues have removed folks to shelters. It will get much worse before it gets better but we are doing what Texans do best, caring for one another in adversity.

soupndstew -- Thanks for the update, so happy that things are good for you and your area and little flooding. I so hope it stays that way. I was watching the news on tv and online and the pictures are staggering.
Take care. Thinking of all those in the area. I will be donating to help in my small way but it all adds up when so many others do the same.

Thank you for another update! All the red tornado squares popping up inside the flood warnings had me very concerned. Kept zooming in and wondering if they were heading your way. Watching lunch news right now I see it's still raining in Houston slowly moving east to wreak havoc in Louisiana.

Thanks to everyone for the hugs and good wishes. The rain in southwest/central Houston is very light, and all of our area streets are clear. We haven't had any tornado alerts in about 36 hours which is heavenly. We've had about 30 inches since this started and the local drainage infrastructure has handled it well. We aren't behind levees or near reservoirs which is a very good thing! Evacuees are overwhelming the shelters and more are being opened in every available school and church. Start of school will be delayed at least one week. Long lines and short supplies at area groceries but that will get better as freeways clear and trucks can get in from distribution centers. Water rescues continue. There is zero exaggeration in saying the process of recovery will take a decade. But Houston is an amazing place - full of grit and gumption. We can and often do fight one another on issues, but we can also come together in strength. Because we have been spared, many in my neighborhood have organized supply drives and are volunteering at area shelters. Houston Strong!

And every one of those warning puppies sets off an alarm on your phone, tablet and TV which propels you from sound asleep to inner room hunker down in less than 60 seconds. Even the cat got the drill down after day 1. The scope of Harvey is broadening with the damage to Port Arthur, Beaumont & Orange, not to mention Louisiana. The impact on the refineries with the subsequent hit at the gas pumps will be tough for the whole US. |

Soupandstew, good to hear you're ok! The magnitude of flooding is unbelieveable!
The past 2 days I followed rescues by the Cajun Navy. Local reporter was traveling with them and streaming live.
Hope that system in the Gulf doesn't bring more misery and praying that Irma takes a sharp north turn and heads out to sea.

Thanks for the good wishes Charley! I think the Gulf system is DOA and praying that the local forecast for Irma curving back out into the Atlantic is correct, although God help the East Coast if she comes near. The worst part is some ways is those folks who were unscathed by the rainfall and even the river/creek flooding but are now flooded due to necessary releases from local reservoirs. Even those whose homes may not get water during the releases will be trapped in their homes for the next 10-15 days due to 3 to 5 feet of water in the streets. Levees and reservoirs are such a part of life here that many people don't even know they are behind a levee or near a reservoir. We've all learned a lot of hydrology and stuff in the last week. Good news is that some of the rivers were supposed to crest today and then gradually recede. Bad news is what homeowners find when they return. I can't venture far from home because I see mountains of flooring and sheet rock on the curbs with furniture and lifetimes of memories and start crying which isn't conducive to good driving.

I only caught a glimpse of the devastation here from last year's August flood, but my dh saw much of it first hand as he helped a family member tear out sheetrock, window & door trim. His home still isn't back to normal. Two other members impacted were luckier in getting their lives back on track.

Charley, it will definitely be a marathon rather than a sprint for all the affected areas of Texas and Louisiana. I did hear from a friend of a friend on Facebook that they were allowed to return to their subdivision today and the waters did NOT reach the homes. I'm hoping for the same outcome as other folks are allowed back into their areas.

Hey y'all I won't be around for awhile because Harvey things will need every ounce I can give for a long time ahead. I got a call to go to a house today and do what I could. The up-close experience is way beyond what you see on media. I will never get that smell out of my brain. Love everyone on this board and so grateful for your support over the last week plus. I'll see you on the other side of this challenge, whenever that is. Meantime, cook like you mean it!
