My sweet beautiful 11 year old niece was just diagnosed with childhood diabetes. Anyone here have a child with such? I'm just devastated. Thanks.

I'm so sorry to hear that. There will be some challenges, but there are newer insulins (I think the FDA just approved a once/week shot....not sure if applicable to children), there are pumps that make it virtually like living without diabetes (sounds easy but still requires monitoring and care) and a transplant is on the horizon. Try not to "be devastated" in front of her....let her know that there are many people/kids with the disease who live long, great lives, do great things and this is just a blip in her future.

Thanks Wallycat. She lives in Washington state and I'm in California so no worries there. Sadly, the original diagnosis was a thyroid problem so she went into a diabetic ketoacidosis before they realized what the real problem was. She gets out of the hospital tomorrow- has been in since Thursday and from what I here she's handling the diagnosis okay but a life changer for sure. Yesterday they were in an all day training session.

Indeed, life changer. Sounds like she is in kind, loving and capable hands now that they know the issue.

When my niece (who is in her mid 20s) was diagnosed she was 3 years old, and they found out after she was admitted to hospital. For many years she took insulin shots...but then she got a pump. She is living a productice life and is working on a doctorate now and is living out in Washington DC area. Once it is under control I am sure your niece will live a very productive life...and she is still young enough she will be able to learn how to live with the ins and outs of being diabetic. My niece certainly has...

My niece certainly has... Thanks - I'm sure she will but she is somewhat of a frail child so I was really worried but I guess she is handling it as well as can be expected. She is actually my grand niece?? - she is my niece's daughter so whatever that makes her. What really kills me is the misdiagnosis from the doctors. She had been having symptoms for a while. Just two weeks ago she was having breathing issues, suffering from weight loss, lethargic and depressed and they said it was nothing more than anxiety. They day before she lost responsiveness they had taken her to the doc because she was dizzy and had blurred vision. They ran all sorts of tests except for glucose levels which would have caught it. They live in an area with good doctors and they have a good health insurance plan so I can't understand how this was missed. In any case from what my sister says, she's doing well. Thanks for all the comments.
