It seems that I may be in the market for a new washing machine. My old one (21 yr. old Maytag) is still working (limping!), but either the belt is going or the bearings. Belt would be an easy repair but still run $250-300 with a service call to diagnose, parts, labor and fixing it. If it is bearings, than it is a dead puppy. I have to decide if I even want a person to come and diagnose the problem or for another couple hundred dollars, just replace it. At 21 years, it does not owe me anything and I may fix it only to have it really die in the near future from something else. Anyway, so I just started poking and looking at new ones (just in case!!). Anybody want to confuse me more with their 2 cents on washers. I was focusing on top loaders. Today I looked at a Maytag and GE that I liked (one was ~ $500, the other ~$800). I know a lot of people have LG or Samsung but I have heard so many mixed reviews on those. Your thoughts..... I appreciate any input that will add to my general state of confusion! Karen

We purchased an LG a year (maybe 2...time flies...3??) ago and have had no issues with it. We bought ours at home depot with free delivery and set up. GE is now owned by Haier; they finally sold the appliance division. I'm not sure that has any real meaning since they are still making them in Mexico or Louisville... I think Maytag is under the Whirlpool umbrella now as is Amana and a few others. Samsung had a scary news blurb similar to their phones (burning stuff) but not sure how frequent that is these days. My LG is front load. From what I have read and researched and scoured the world is....if you have the money, get a Speed Queen. Built in the US and built like tanks. It may outlive you!

I bought a LG recently. only used once so far. the main thing is top or front loader. I wanted a top loader without an agitator. they have gone up in ratings lately. I heard too many complaints about front loaders with smells and mold or using so little water clothes didn't get clean. I used consumer reports and appliance reviews on Lowes and Home depot websites. the top loaders without an agitator have much larger capacity than old ones, and use way less water. I like to use it as a "soaking tub" for some things too. I've had to replace a DW and refrigerator lately so I personally think it's Russian roulette with appliances these days. they don't build them to last 20 years anymore.

Thanks wallycat and traildoggie, this is the kind of info. I wanted to hear i.e personal experiences. I am always so skeptical of stuff I read on line. Today I was looking at some LG's which are a bit more expensive but nice. I also want top loader, probably without agitator. At least I have that much narrowed down so far. And of course, today I used mine at home and it worked fine....it must have heard me talking of replacing it. At least I don't have to replace it emergently at this point since it seems to work fine some of the time. Anyway.....the search goes on..... And yes, they don't build them like they used to which is why it is so hard to part with my old one. I have never had a single issue with it in the entire 21 yrs!!!! And they are all owned by someone else these days, too! Not sure if that has much impact at all on things.

Speed queen. They still build them like they used to and I think you can pick top or front load....but anything appliance, house or car...I cringe. HATE throwing money at that stuff. I guess considering you got 21 years out of one appliance, that is money in the bank. In WI, I finally went Maytag for our dryer because the "employee discount" was wasted on how many GE dryers I had to replace. Never had an issue after that...left it when we moved.

I've used my LG a couple more times and am pleased. I got an LG dryer too, and it also works well. this is in a vacation house so it won't get hard use, but we are pretty far out and repairs would be costly, a laundromat is not an option. the controls are electronic but not hard to use. I would not call it 'intuitive" but close. I have a very old machine at my main house that will die one day soon, and I would buy another LG at this point.
ETA after a few more uses, I am very pleased with the LG. I have no clue if it will last a long time but it works nicely, and I absolutely wanted a top loader. I will probably never use this machine intensely but if you are feeling "pushed" toward a front loader, make sure you check out the agitator free top loaders. the potential capacity is huge but doesn't fill if it's not needed.

Thanks everyone. Right now my old machine has decided to "sorta work" again but I do not know for how long. At 21 years it does not owe me anything but since I know the newer machines "ain't what the old ones were like" I have been procrastinating buying for as long as I can hold out. I am leaning toward either an LG now if I take the more modern approach, but I still want to check out Speed Queens as a reliable option. Guess time will tell..... The real tests will be when my son gets back from Israel in 2 weeks and my daughter from her 2 months at summer camp end of August whether my old machine can make it through all of their dirty clothes!!

DD got back from camp this past week (with a fellow counselor from London) and finished both girls laundry with my old machine, but it was very unsettling listening to it spin all over the place. I have stalled long enough so the day after dirty camp stuff was cleaned, I went out and ordered the new machine. Should be here next Wednesday. I ended up going with the Speed Queen top load. May not get 21 years out of the new one like my old, but I am hoping it will give me a decent lifespan!
