Do you use a veggie/fruit wash or just rinse with water?
So, what do you use. Water? A homemade mixture (and if so what)? Store bought product?
Just curious. I've used a vinegar/water mixture before but not in awhile.
Thanks.

I just use water for the most part, but I will wash the outside of melons with Dawn dish soap since cutting through the rind can transfer dirt to the fruit.

I just use water. I've seen studies in the past where the veggie or fruit washes aren't really proven to be any more effective than good old water.

Water here, too, but I like the idea of making a water/vinegar spray for that use because vinegar is supposed to be a good antiseptic, isn't it? Wouldn't that make sense then, or ?? <just thinking on this for the first time ever> I mean, I've been hearing from one old friend who uses vinegar for EVERYTHING, and lately reading articles online about same...so all that has me thinking of using plain old apple cider vinegar for cleaning and MAYBE for veggies as well. (Just about to cut into a watermelon myself....and now am thinking for first time ever of CLEANING IT before cutting into it, so thanks Cafelatte, for giving me the idea!)

I also wash the outside of melons, avocados, anything I peel the skin off or cut through. I did use a vinegar/water wash on strawberries that was suggested to help them stay mold free and it seemed to work. I think it was one part vinegar to 9 parts water.

Water or, if I have the time, I'll fill up my Oxo salad spinner with water and vinegar - the "spin" cycle helps to dry things off after I've rinsed things. I'm one that uses vinegar for nearly everything - in the washer (every load of clothes gets a cup), washing veggies, cleaning out my electric kettle, in a spray bottle as a disinfectant, in the carpet shampooer... I try to be as chemical free as (reasonably) possible.

Most things I rinse with water. I often use the salad spinner to spin dry, especially berries, leafy greens. melons I wash with a dab of dw detergent especially anything with a textured skin like cantaloupe. winter squash get washed in a vinegar solution since we keep them for months and it slows down deterioration. it's funny but I never thought to wash avocados but it's probably a good idea.
