I noticed more and more mention avocado oil in recipes that I see online, and I've noticed that more and more supermarkets are carrying it etc. Does anyone use it? Anything you use it for in particular?
I'm a huge fan of avocados (good for you and just love them too!), so I would guess I would like avocado oil. I've heard it has a pretty mild flavor so would be good in all types of recipes. I wonder how it compares to other oils, mainly olive oil? I know that it has a higher smoke point than many other oils.
Just curious I might give it a try --- perhaps add to my next Vitacost order. Thx.

I use it! I get mine from Costco. It has a higher smoke point than olive oil (which is my oil of choice) but is also flavorless, so using it in things (dressings, baking, etc.) makes it more versatile. Depending on the olive oil you use (some has peppery bite, some buttery tones), avocado oil (the stuff I'm getting) is more buttery but pretty nondescript.

I bought some at Trader Joe's and use it here and there. Like wallycat says, it has a higher smoke point and has no real flavor. It's worth a try.

Thanks. I am going to pick up a bottle, could come in handy for stir fries etc or just to have another oil to choose from. My go to is olive oil too.
I've been meaning to buy some, but forget to get it at the store/or order. I was just surprised how often I've seen it mentioned recently.

I got a bottle at Costco too. using it instead of canola oil for no particular reason. I thought it would work in stir fries where higher temps are standard but so far have used it in baking where olive oil might have too much flavor. very mild . I use mostly Olive oil except for baking.

I use avocado oil all the time. It is now the only oil I use other than olive oil. It has a very neutral flavor and a high smoke point. I always use it in place of vegetable oil, canola oil, etc.

So I bought a bottle of avocado oil and so far just used it in a quick stir fry of some veggies and in a salad dressing.
I also bought a bottle of roasted walnut oil since, well, it sounded really good. It was one of those total impulse buys.
It will be nice to have something other than olive oil on hand for certain recipes/cooking.
Thx all. ,

Glad I could help. It was just funny how I've seen it mentioned in some many recipes etc recently. Your potatoes sound great -- where do you buy your Tajin seasoning (or do you make it up yourself at home)? I bought a small bottle a few years back and haven't seen it since. I see that TJ's has a chili lime seasoning, I wonder how that compares to what I had (which was soooo good). I love those flavors. Thx.

I found Tajin at the Walmart Neighborhood Market...although it's been a while. The Trader Joe's version is not as spicy as the Walmart one. I have used both TJ and Walmart's on potatoes (24 small potatoes cut in half with 2T olive oil and 2T Tajin). I like to use TJs Chili Lime seasoning on popcorn (I use butter flavored olive oil)...when I tried the Tajin on popcorn I thought it was a little too spicy...

I'm going to pick up a bottle at TJ's next time I'm there. I love those flavors (and the fact that you think it is a bit milder is a good thing, I'm a wimp with heat). I've heard good things about it, and have been meaning to pick up a bottle. Thanks for the review and recipe!

Emptynestmom -- It was so nice out today that I took a walk to TJ's and remembered to pick up the chile lime blend. I used it on some chicken cutlets, and had it along with a black bean/corn salad. Thumbs up to dinner -- I can definitely see using this often since I love that flavor profile. Leftover chicken going into a salad for tomorrow's dinner.
What was so funny then when I was getting a bottle of it, there was a women next to me that was buying a couple of bottles. I guess it sells out fast, and she said she needed to stock up! I have to think about other ways to use it. I've never tried tajin (or TJ's take on it) on pineapple, mango etc, which is a pretty traditional way to use it, so I'm up for trying it.

My DIL says it is great on pineapple...I think I would grill the pineapple and use it on that, haven't so far because I just bought a new grill and haven't bought a pineapple yet...

emtynestmom and traildoggie -- Thanks for the ideas. I will definitely give it a try on fruit, so far I've just used on chicken and while stir frying up some peppers and onions.
