My old house had a kitchen with a large, deep window facing south which was perfect for growing most herbs. I didn't always grow them,I was too lazy and not much of a gardener, but I miss that window. This house faces the opposite direction and I have no real kitchen window since my sink is in the island, but it's open to a wall of windows. However, those face north. It's also my backyard, which isn't great for growing herbs either. I now there is Aerogarden, but is it possible to grow herbs on my counter with my under-cabinet lights on? Would I need special lights. I figure I could try it with a few herbs, but was wondering if anyone has done this successfully. If I could do it with at least parsley, basil and rosemary, it would be perfect. I do have other windows that face south I could use, but one of them is DH's office and I know he wouldn't be thrilled with that, another is the dining room, but it has a tree in front, so not full light. Any tips or ideas?

What kind of lights are your under-cabinet lights? If you can switch out the bulbs to a full-spectrum bulb you will have the best results. It IS possible to get herbs going under florescent lights, but I'm not sure they would like it there permanently.

I just checked - the cabinet lights are a light bar, but with 3 bulbs inside that look like little halogen light bulbs. They are wired to the wall, but you can turn them off individually under the cabinets if you don't want them all on. They could be replaced easily with something that would help the herbs grow. I'll have to do some research. Mine are similar to these

I've used under-cabinet lights to start my tomato and pepper seeds when we lived in a home with under-cabinet lighting, so it's totally possible! I would start by seeing what light bulb options you have using the existing fixtures.

Thanks mrswz. I wasn't thinking of growing them from seeds but just keeping the plants alive. I've seen some plants at the grocery store, so I'l be picking some up - not much to lose in trying. I did see some grow lights at amazon, so that's also an option and I could use them anywhere. They are cheaper than replacing my fixtures.

I keep forgetting that I want to try this. I am bumping this up as reminder to myself to get some plants the next trip to the grocery store. This time of year I mainly just use dry herbs, so I'm not really thinking about it.
