Post by traildoggie on yesterday at 7:56am I think we should have a new thread for this year. I posted the info below on the old thread so it is duplicated here. Is anyone still around?
In honor of the new year, maybe we can take advantage of the usual diet/exercise mania that will descent upon us in January. I "re-signed" up for WW Dec 20th. I do very well tracking exercise. I missed only 3 days in December, 2days were jury duty, other xmas day. It's rewarding to have the big calendar hanging on the wall and watch month after month fill up! It works WAY better for me than electronic points.
WW is working pretty well. I don't like the points being so high on my more "carb centered" choices but I am tracking and sticking with it. I have been hungry most nights. that seems to be what it takes. right now I'm focused on "working" winter vegies and getting some new ideas into the line up. I have a few turnip things I like. right now working on Brussels sprouts. I made the one posted on the food section, roasted sprouts with pears.
the WW program is completely different from the version I wrestled with last winter. I need to weigh in this morning so we'll see if I'm still happy! the program works well. ETA ... not especially happy. my jeans feel looser but scale not showing progress. WW does not to seem to have actual forums anymore, just a connect feature that is not useful for me.

Thanks Val for starting this. I've been indulging in too many glasses of wine and cheese lately. I really need to focus and get back on track. I've been having some issues with my back ( I think it's my sacroiliac joint, as I've had this problem years ago) so I have been lazy at walking and just moving. I've not looked at WW since I rejoined to check the new points out. I know they were getting rid of their forums and member blogs that used to be open to everyone and I think they were redesigning everything so only members could participate.
What do you find different about the program now?
Hope others join in - everyone is welcome.

Well, I guess we're not going to get overrun with all the new January dieters... hope a few folks show up as we get out of the holidays.
It's been several years for me now since I had a working WW program. Many of the foods I had from back then showed up in my food list. most had disappeared last year but somehow, they're back. that was the main block for me, I didn't want to do a new program and re enter all that data. I don't know if point values updated to the new standards, think unlikely. I started with 30 daily points instead of 26. this came from last year as did my weight. I think the main difference is points are calculated differently and sugar and sat fat are penalized, protein emphasized. Most older recipe's nutritional data didn't include "sugars", or sat fat. things without added sweetener may have some sugars. I haven't entered many new recipes to see how it works, but it's a required field so my work around is 2 gms so it can run the calculation. I find many of my carb centered meals end up at 10-12 points.
the chat feature works quite well if you have a question. I get help almost instantly when I ask. the billing center now seems to be ( my guess here by accent.... India). the " activity" section is cleaned up and includes more things without getting too long winded. I just record there and also on a paper calendar so I don't pay much attention to the points. I exercise an hour at least every day, doing something. the 'connect' is kind of fb-ish with lots of pictures but no conversations taking place.
there is supposed to be an initial consult foronline users that you schedule in the first month. I decided to let it go for a bit as I was busy enough. making a written list of questions to ask when I schedule it.
I do most of my entries on the desktop and don't like the phone app much, but maybe that's just me. there is a scanner embedded in it that I didn't try yet. I will use it more after I get more meals entered. so far I am not having good connection between desktop and phone, so entries on one don't necessarily show up on the other. the desktop is windows, phone iphone. have not used the ipad yet but will try it next week if Dh will let go of it for a minute.

I'm wrestling with what food plan to focus on this year. I've done well with WW in the past, but kind of lost my mojo last year. Working long hours, so convenience is more important than in the past; plus, I have to reduce my beloved carbs due to health issues. New year, new challenges.

I've been off on a work related trip to our home we are building. travel this time of year is more challenging with the snow and ice but we got 'er done! got home to find my refrigerator died and ran a limited amount of water onto the floor. about half the freezer stuff was mush and got tossed , the other half were things that could be refrozen like nuts and bread products. the refrigerator wasn't warm yet, but not as cold as it should have been so I think most of its contents are Ok. bought a new frig this morning and will have it by tomorrow sometime. Not the greatest string of events for a diet but I feel like I maintained OK. the big indulgence was a pint of haggen daz mango sorbet... 4 nights for 2 people. How's everyone else doing?

We had friends who were out of town and came back home to the water line to the fridge broken and caused floor damage, etc. Hope the new fridge works out well.

BarbaraL - I can relate. When I first joined WW, I was so focused and ready to do it. I got to where I am able to maintain, but old habits are creeping back, and I want them to stop. I know that a lot of it is the time of year, as I do so much better in the summer, but I need to focus again, now! I don't really think it's the plan so much as it's the mental readiness to do any diet plan and for it to work. For me it's about tracking and measuring what I am eating. What I am eating hasn't changed. I'm not suddenly going out and eating fast food. It's the eyeballing the portions that isn't working. I used to be good at eyeballing, but not so much any more. : I need to keep that scale on the counter at all times.

we have hardwood floor in the kitchen so the water warped the surface a little. so not totally benign but not bad enough to get it refinished. we turn off the water to the icemaker when we are gone but the bucket of cubes melted and ran down thru the dispenser. the new frig came yesterday and it is nice!. our old one was 15 yo and had been acting a little funny lately, set the temp down... but then it seemed fine. so surprise, totally DOA.
I have no illusions that I lost anything... I can barely lose with an hour of exercise daily. sitting and driving for 11 hours on 2 of 5 days was no big calorie burner. I really watched what I ate but did not track . we had too much 'stuff" going on and I did not put WW on the ipad yet. DH uses it way more than I and dropped it a few months ago & put a ding in the glass. (so glad I didn't do that!) we loaded most of our stuff the night before we left and when I pulled the ipad out, the glass had cracked in about 6 or 12 new places. like the temp change made it run just like a windshield. not sure if we will repair or replace but works ok for the moment. I don't like tracking on the iphone. anyway, I ate light... lots of salads with salsa dressing, limited servings of lasagna and vegie pizza with big salads. will get back to tracking either today or tomorrow.

We're both theoretically "on" WW but struggling to get back to where we were. Good news is that we did rejoin our gym before the first and I am thrilled with the progress even if I don't get there as often as I want. Big improvement in balance and reduction in creaky joints for me in just 3 weeks. Wiped out by allergies right now but hope to get back soon. New year, new focus, new potential - that's my mantra. DH is fixing a WW recipe tonight-grilled halibut filets on top of a warm potato salad topped with a sauteed bell pepper and onion slaw.

Val - I have a crack in my iPad screen as well. It's only noticeable at a certain angle and it's just a diagonal line. It's over $100 to replace the screen, so really not worth it for me since it's not a big deal and mine isn't the latest one. Your's sounds like it will be harder to use as you touch the screen more, it's bound to affect the cracks.
Soupandstew - it is hard to get back into that mode. Starting with the gym is a good start. On Sunday I started tracking again. I woke up and said "this is the day". So far, I've been at 26 pts per day (using old PP program). I'm also making sure I walk on the treadmill for 21 days straight because I really do find if I do something for 21 days, it makes it more habit for me. I don't foresee any travel or anything that should interrupt this goal.

WW has a new coaching feature with the first session free in the first month. I didn't sign up for it right away, but just did for tomorrow. squeaking in on the last day. we were gone last week, no tracking although I behaved myself. that is one thing I will focus on is getting my phone set up to make tracking easier. I am doing way better than last year with recording data.
caffe latte be careful with temperature changes if the screen has a ding. it was not that cold here, maybe 30, and the car was in the garage. the next morning when I got it out to use, the small crack had gone nuts. no sharp edges though. it was likely temp change.... either the cold at night did it, or rapid rewarming as we drove. we only paid about $399 for it, so no way will we pay $299 to replace the screen. DH uses it more than I do and he's the one who dropped it. they are so slippery! I always used it in a leather case even if the buttons are harder to reach. it had some texture to hang on to.
Soup & stew congrats on getting moving again. I do an hour of something almost every day. some days much more. I track it on a paper calendar and it is very rewarding to look at the months get filled up with only a few rest days. I get much more positive reinforcement with a big wall calendar. the WW program has better choices for activity now. even has spinning in there.
caffe latte glad you are getting back to tracking... you did so well before. I thought if you reached goal weight, that you got to be a lifetime free member. do I have that wrong?

Val, the lifetime status for WW is only for in person meetings, and not online, so I don't qualify (or that's how it was). I guess online people can lie about their weight and goal where in person you can't. I'm happy using my non-ww app for the time being. As for tracking on the iphone, once you get the hang of it, it does become easier. I used to record meals ahead. If I knew what I was having for bfast, I would record the night before. Any changes are easy to correct.
My iPad is always in a case, so the crack was surprising, even though I have dropped it. I can see how temp changes can affect it, especially cold. There are shops the can replace the screen for less than Apple, both mail in and in person. Also, you can always sell them on ebay with a broken screen - people who know how to fix them buy them, repair and resell.

Yep, that makes sense. it would be easy to fake achieving goal online and end up free forever.
thanks for ipad info. we will keep using it as long as it works and there are no sharp spots. ours is 4th generation if I remember right.

I've been staying on track, eating 26 - 32 pts per day and walking on the treadmill. I still keep Thurs. as my weigh in day and I was down 1/2 lb. I will use my new scale next week, and will weigh on both for comparison. My old one could only weigh to the .5 lbs while the new one is .1 lbs, so it is more accurate.

I've completed 7 days of treadmill walking, and still tracking points. We were out at lunchtime yesterday and indulged in some gyros at a Greek restaurant we came across. It's always hard to calculate how many points these things are, but I just use what's in the database and estimate. I remember in the past I could use my daily and weekly points and still lose, so all is not lost. I have until Thurs. to get any extra sodium out of my system, which was also a scale killer for me.
I hope everyone else is doing well. For those reading, feel free to drop in and just chat. You don't have to be on a program to participate.

Where is everyone? Just posting to say that I have been diligent sticking to eating well and walking daily. I think I got to the place in my brain where I'm on and auto mode (for now anyway). I try to keep my phone on me at all times so that I can see how far I am walking or steps I am taking so I have a somewhat accurate log. I'm rethinking eating foods based on points (such as snacks) and opting for lower pt foods which is what I was doing before. The scale is on the counter and being used all the time too.

I'm around caffe latte. sticking close to plan and exercising. weighing and eating a lot of vegies. nothing is happening. not gaining, not losing. sigh. I have been stressing a lot lately about politics. not trying to discuss it here but I am having significant trouble sleeping and just being anxious. Not sure how I will get thru years of this and stay sane.

Not sure how I will get thru years of this and stay sane. Not sleeping and anxiety isn't healthy, but I hope it's just temporary. I'm not a worrier or easily stressed, but I do know what you mean about politics. It's really scary what's happening, and even scarier that there are still so many that support what's going on. I wasn't raised to think that way, and I sure haven't raised my boys like that either. I told DH that I would gladly be 4 years older today if we could just skip these 4 years and move on from it. Aside from that, I'm still being diligent tracking and walking daily. I haven't had anything sweet (except for fruit) for a few weeks now and I do have some tempting things around. In the past I was able to say no to these indulgences, and being able to do that now really tells me I'm in it again. I should be in the middle of my weight range again this week, so I'll do maintenance after that and start increasing points.

I enjoyed Melissa Mccarthy channeling sean spicer on snl. I am still giggling about "moose lambs". I haven't laughed that hard in a long time!. can't wait to see what rosy ODonnell can do with Bannon. caffe latte, I know what you mean. I've never been so concerned about unstable leadership and the sanity of OSCP(our so-called president). I think this goes beyond personality disorder. he doesn't deserve to be called by name. I' d donate 4 years to jump forward too.
I don't remember if I ever posted this recipe. I got it from Fitness mag. it's heavy on points but tasty, fairly quick, no exotic ingredients. I pruned back the fat but ate more than a serving so I took the 16 points. I ate light at lunch so fit into 30 points. www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipe/roasted-sweet-potato-quinoa-and-fried-egg-bowl/
I'm in the midst of a clean up and re filing of all my years of recipes. I don't use books much anymore. I use hanging folders in general categories, then plastic sleeves. I can pull a recipe and not worry about it getting wet/ spattered in the kitchen.
ETA we are getting our ipad screen replaced. found a place that does it fast for about $100.

Our ipad screen started to shed bits of glass so we got the screen replaced. $120 with a one day turn around. friend of ours works near a place show does screen replacements so she dropped it off and picked it up. beats trying to do it ourselves via u-tube, and no reason to replace the device itself. it is never just the device. a new unit would need a new carrying case, new chargers, and I'm not sure if we would need to re-buy the add on software we have. this was a good option for us.
I am not losing and I've been tracking and exercising, so I am dropping my points below 30 for a few days to see what that does. I mid 20's yesterday. had a blackened chicken salad for lunch yesterday, used salsa for dressing, and ate the other half for dinner. my jeans are looser. I missed Friday weigh in. decided to move it to Monday to follow some lean point days. I need to see some change in numbers this time. I woke up so hungry in the middle of the night I had to eat a small handful of nuts but still maybe 25 points total for the day.

I thought I had replied last week, but I must have not pressed reply and then closed the browser. Good news on the screen repair. You wouldn't need to buy or replace any software with a new ipad, if you use the same apple ID. I've replaced a few phones over the years and the apps always transfer. I would never try replacing a screen myself - my fingers couldn't work with something so delicate - would be crooked probably. My screen has been the same for months, so I won't be replacing it. I've been doing well with my treadmill walking and completed the 21 day challenge and am still going down there 5 - 6 days a week. We have a Precor treadmill that is about 13 years old and is really great - worth the money spent. One issue now is that the incline buttons work only on program mode so you can't manually change it - speed works no problem. We had someone come look at it yesterday and it would be about $500 to replace, plus installation costs. A new similar model is over $4000, but still not worth replacing because something else could go wrong with it. I just set it to random program and let it decide my incline. The repair guy said that he doesn't repair Precor's all that much - the cheaper makes, all the time. I'm still tracking but maintaining, so that means minimum 32 points (old program). You really need to eat your points - not below. I am experimenting and weighing daily. I find the days I go below points, I am always up or the same the next day. The days I go a couple above or at my pts, I see a bit of a drop. Now that I have a scale that weighs to .1 lb, I see the daily fluctuations compared to when I used the old .5 lb scales. Oddly, we only drink wine on the weekends, and I go over my points (about 40 pts), and I find I weight the least on Monday (the last 2 weeks I did). If eat something that is higher in sodium, then I will see a gain for a few days. You should try weighing every day to see what your body does with extra points one day. Don't be afraid to go over points - they are there to be used. If you are counting activity points, and I am sure you are earning a lot, you should be eating some of those, especially if you aren't eating WP. I know on the old program, you aren't supposed to eat less than the minimum points, which is 26, so I am sure the new program would be the same (at 30 is it?). I have never been hungry doing WW. We had weather in the 60's this past weekend, and we are supposed to see those temps again this weekend - maybe even 70 on Sun. they say. I want to grill so badly if it's that warm. We've been up and down in temp lately that my migraines have been bad. I enjoy the high temps, but hate the fluctuations.

I am finally down 2.2 lbs. I had lost 1.5 way back in Dec so I'm happy for the moment. I counted in the mid 20's for points for a couple days and maybe that jolted me into showing a loss. I felt thinner and my jeans were looser but there is nothing like reinforcement from the scale numbers. I'm not surprised, I need to get radical to lose anything. always been that way.
we also have a Precor treadmill. our third one. on the first one the belt wore out. repair would have been costly. the second had a defect where it sparked after I ran for a while. they looked at it, couldn't figure out what was wrong, and I asked them to replace it. you should have seen the repair guys face when I held my hand near the console while running and you could see a spark jump! I don't use it as much as I used to. use the spin bike more often. we have lots of equipment ...our indulgence, since neither of us would trek to a gym. we just got back from mountain biking for 2 hours. a lot of work but a lot of fun too.

Congrats on the loss Val! Looser clothing is always a better indicator than the scale though IMHO. I can't imagine seeing sparks on the treadmill console. Precor does make great equipment though. We have a bowflex too, but I just can't seem to get into it. DH uses it though, so good investment for him.

Looks like you all need some company . I've been threatening to join this thread for months but just couldn't get myself into a weight loss regimen but I think I'm finally there and I'm jumping in with both feet . In November I joined Jazzercise but due to laziness and bad weather, I only made it there a couple of times until this month and I'm happy to report that since Feb 1st I have now gone to Jazzercise about 9 times and I've dropped 3 pounds. I'm not joining WW or anything else like that for now - I'm just eating lower fat foods, doing portion control and EXERCISING which seems to be key for me. While I'd love to lose weight quickly I know from experience that it never works long term so I have set September as my target month to lose a total of 30 lbs which I think is realistic. Hoping to check in here at least weekly to keep me on track and for much needed inspiration.

Welcome McGee - looking forward to your posts. Congrats on the weight loss and sticking with Jazzercise! When you find something you like, it makes it easier. I'm haven't officially joined WW, but I use an app that counts the old points plus that I used to follow. There are a lot of free apps to count points or calories if that's something you want to do. It really is all about portion control and making better choices. Some weeks you will have losses, and others you will have gains. I've found that the weeks I gained, most were followed by a larger loss the following week, so don't get discouraged. 30 lbs by Sept is doable. Sometimes it's easier to take your goal and divide them into mini goals. Instead of focusing on the 30 lbs in 6 or 7 months, set smaller goals, such as 5 lbs a month, or 10 lbs by Easter, or whatever you want it to be. Looking at the big picture can be discouraging for some people. I used to read some of the forums on WW and read that a lot - especially from people who had a huge amounts to lose. We are supposed to have at least 6 days with weather in the 60's. I want to grill so badly!!! Everything tastes better grilled, IMHO Hope everyone is doing well. Soupandstew and BarbaraL - join us again! ETA - I forgot to mention that I weigh everyday and only count Thurs as my weight for the week. Well, today I am 1.1 lbs lighter than yesterday (figures ) and who knows what the scale will show next Thurs. Our bodies really do what they want to do. I didn't do anything different the last few days. So for those who only weigh once a week, it's possible you are losing, but the day you step on the scale isn't telling the whole story. Just a thought.

Hope everyone is doing well! I know that I am doing well when I am not looking for snacks or sweets. I find the longer I go without them, I don't crave them. I have cookies and sweets in the house since DH can't/won't live without them for some reason, so they are around, but I am even thinking about them. After dinner, I don't eat anything. I have a cup a herbal tea at night (such as peppermint or hibiscus) and that works for me. If I find I need something else, then a piece of fruit works too.

caffe latte we have a lot of exercise equipment after doing this at home for > 30 years. some things get more use than others depending on season and what feels best. I've been doing more metabolic workouts lately ... faster cardio moves using weights. and then regular weight workouts. also the spin bike pretty regularly. haven't used the treadmill nor elliptical much lately. they will rotate back into favor in the future. DH and I don't use the same thing. he doesn't like "metabolic" workouts I've been doing. I get foot irritation from too much time on the spin bike. He does more outdoor garden work than I do. As long as you do something, it's all good.
he also gets to eat lots of raisins, M&M's, sweet bread, nuts. chocolate. I don't. I need to have them for him but I just don't eat them myself. My big indulgence is the bottom tip of his nightly ice cream cone with about 1 TB of home made ice cream in it. I don't track that. other wise I cut out almost all " goodies". I don't miss them unless we are doing a hike or a ride and I get hungry. then a Kind bar. haven't had one in weeks now. weather has been crummy and relaying on home workouts.
Mc Gee, that is the one thing I'd suggest is finding a way to add something you can do at home when it's too difficult to get to a class. It's really nice not needing to drive somewhere or have good weather to exercise, if you can work out something.

Val, my DH also does all the outdoor work which is great because I hate it. Do you use a heart rate monitor or watch? I carry my iphone all the time to track steps/miles, so I don't want a fitbit or anything that tracks activity, but am thinking about getting a heart rate watch for when I use the treadmill. We never got the attachment for the Precor and was thinking it would help to know what zone I was in.

Weird, I thought I responded to your post caffe latte.
I use a HRM, old Polar chest strap one, that works with elliptical and treadmill. I have several of these. they work on the spin bike but not right away so I don't get accurate numbers there. I've been told that no monitors that count steps work well for cycling but have not tried it myself. I can tell my heart rate pretty well without a monitor, but am thinking about a fitbit or something if I can find one that gives me useful information from riding.
I've been exercising a long time and can get a lot of work done at a HR of about 130. that is sort of my long term endurance "setting". can do all day at that rate. for me "all out" is about 150-155 and I can't maintain that for very long. I used to have a polar watch that tracked HR only but it died years ago and I didn't replace. I think chest straps are more accurate than wrist monitors.

We never did get the chest strap with the treadmill. I remember it was extra and DH said he wouldn't use it. I know they are supposed to be better than wrist montitors, but I don't need an exact number to be measured. I know a lot of fitness gadgets aren't accurate, so it's best to use the numbers as a guideline. I'll look to see what's on Amazon. Even if it's an older model, it would suit my needs for now. I don't want to invest a lot of money into this.
Apple health has cycling distance as part of the app. Have you tried that or another app?
I'm still sticking to tracking and doing well with measuring and portions. I don't find I am hungry and I load up on a lot more veggies when I track I have realized.
Hope everyone is doing well.
