Amazon is having a sale on their Fire tablets: the Fire, Fire HD8 and probably a slew of their products too. The Fire is 33 instead of 49, and the Fire HD is 59 instead of 89. I don't know if this is fairly common, or do they have similar sales -- with this being perhaps a bit better since Cyber Monday.
Sooooo. One of my questions is how is it for reading books. I know you can read books just like on a Kindle (love mine!), but I was curious in terms of clarity, glare etc or are they basically the same or at least not a big difference (I love the clarity/readability on my Kindle).
If you haven an Amazon fire, which one do you have? Are you glad you bought it? You use it mainly for?
Would you recommend another tablet over one of the FIres? I'm not interested in spending lots on a tablet since I have a laptop (albeit bulky) and a Kindle. I would be using this mainly for traveling, long commutes, and for accessing recipes when cooking and who knows what else.....
I have enough Citi reward points that I can get it for just a couple of dollars.
Thanks.

If you love using an e-reader, I don't think you'll love using a Fire as an e-reader. There is definitely glare. For e-reading, it's hard to beat a paperwhite.
I have a 4th gen HD 7. I like it alright for what I use it for, but it is NOT the all-purpose tablet I was hoping it would be. I do use it a lot for recipes and pepperplate- it's nice that I can take my recipe collection with me. I also use it to keep up on my e-mails when traveling, and I have a few game apps that either the kids or I play. The camera is terrible, and it doesn't take much to suck down the battery life. Maybe the newer ones hold a charge longer.
I do like it, but it's no ipad. I'm not sure I'd use an ipad enough to justify the expense, so I make do with my Fire.
Price-wise, those are about the best they get.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I haven't bought it yet, and hey it hasn't even hit my shopping cart. Yet. But I agree, the price seems right for what I need. And, thanks for the info on the reading, I'm a huge fan of my Kindle largely for that reason.

I ended up buying since I wanted to get what seemed like a good sale price (of course they could have simlar deal again and again). I will think about it and could always return it to BestBuy. I just bought the tablet, if I get the Amazon case through Amazon -- I think that one is 34.99 which is more than 1/2 of the cost of the tablet. I know there are tons of other ones out there too, I just wanted to get the tablet for now.
Thanks again for the feedback.

I bought a 4 pack of them, with cases, from QVC last month to give as gifts to the parents and inlaws. I'm debating whether to return them or not. I opened one up and really don't like it like I do my iPad, but these wouldn't be for me, and I didn't use it, so I'm on the fence. Let me know how you like yours.

cafelatte,
If I keep it, I will post a review. I wasn't even thinking of getting a tablet, but then I saw all the press about the sale. I bought mine at BestBuy so I can easily return. I wanted to get the sale price while I ponder. Ha.
What didn't you like about the Fire? I I don't have an iPad so can't compare.
Thanks

I think it's because I have an iPhone also and if I add an app to one, it automatically goes on the other. The fire tablet was only the 7" and it is smaller than the mini ipad. There wasn't anything wrong with it itself, just personal preference and what I am used to. I am sending them back since the parents live far away and if they have problems using it, I can't help them over the phone since I am not as familiar with using it to help. One less headache. How do you like yours?

cafelatte -- I just got it today but haven't opened it yet. It was a definite impulse buy and I haven't decided if I am going to even keep it. I gotta admit I got sucked into the sale price.
I think you are right returning it, just not a good fit for you all.

If I didn't have an ipad, I probably would have kept it for myself since I wouldn't be able to compare it to anything. For the price, you really can't go wrong. I use my ipad way more than I ever thought I would. I travel with it, play games, watch Netflix at times, browse the web, find recipes on it, etc. It does not replace my laptop for typing, but if I invested in a keyboard, it might.

cafelatte -- That is what I'm thinking -- the convenience alone of using it in my kitchen, while traveling or commuting..... I though the $59 was a good price. It is ironic that depending on the cover, it could cost more than 1/2 of the actual kindle.

Covers are crazy expensive. You can find cheap covers on ebay or Amazon, and maybe even TJ Maxx/Marshalls, but it's hit and miss there. The ones I ordered came with a silicone case. The Fire seems durable and less breakable than an iPad.
