As I mentioned in another thread, I was thinking about buying some T--fal pans to donate to a favorite charity (they need help furnishing apartments, and I usually go for getting the kitchen stuff) -- One of the pans a 5 qt Covered Jumbo Cooker, I thought would be a good multi purpose pan but then I was wondering if it is too bag. The people that will be getting it have the pretty basic electric stoves. I haven't had such a large pan, my largest electric burner is about 7 1/2 inches. I know a large pan wouldn't fit (not enough clearance on my back burners, but would fit on my front burner).
It says in the Macys blurb ..... 5 Qt. Covered Jumbo Cooker, Measures 22.25" x 12 13/64" x 4 1/16"
It is on a great sale price so I wanted to get it and a few other things. But I wasn't sure if a similar pan, but a bit smaller would be a better idea.
So what's the scoop with matching burner to size of pan. I know "they" say you shouldn't ideally put a pan smaller than burner, but what if pan is much larger. May not cook as evenly ..... I would imagine unless you have a super mega deluxe commercial stove, the burner has to be smaller, but of course varies by how much depending on the stove top.
Thanks

The burner size matching thing I think is mostly for gas. If the pan is too small, the flames will lick the side of the pans and discolor them. I have induction and a few pans that are bigger and it really depends on the type of cooking I am doing. Once the pan is hot, if the edges aren't on a burner, the pan still stays hot. In some ways, it is better because I can stir and move things to a less hot (if that occurs) spot. My largest burner is 11" and when I had gas, it was 12. I don't know what electric is these days...I don't even know if they make the old coil style.
What a sweet and thoughtful, wonderful thing you are doing!

Thanks Wallycat. I bought the pan since it was such a great deal and I could always return -- 9.99 after rebate for a t-fa 12+ inch jumbo cooker. Bit I'm still curious about pan size/burner size in general. I still wonder if it would be too big for them, if they have an average electric stove. I don't think that pan would even fit on my back burner (let alone how well the heat would be distributed in the pan given the burner) -- I don't think it would have the clearance without hitting the back of the stove.
I've always heard about the burner size on gas stove (just like you said, watch the flame etc), but never much mention about that must electric) stoves. I I have no idea what is "typical" for electric burners, my largest burner is about 7 1/2 inches.
And I also got a set of Corningware (the same stuff that I bet 90% of us have in our kitchen, the French White) since super deal after rebate.
Macys had some great deals, almost tossed in a Cuisinart hand mixer since less than $10 and ....
Buying kitchen stuff is always fun!.

What a lucky family. I had a traditional gas stove in Wisconsin and that was my biggest gripe...the burners were all the same size, but if I had a 12" pan in front, no way was I going to be able to get a second large pan directly in back. I thought my induction would be better, and in some ways it is (it sits on an island) but still not ideal. In my perfect world, I'd have a big old wolf with a griddle but after cleaning induction, I may never go back to gas. Always a compromise, no?

What a great gift idea/donation! When I had a more traditional stove many years ago, the large burner was always at the front of the stove, so larger pots or pans weren't an issue. Also, the edge of the burners are not up against the back, as there are always a few inches of space there. I agree with wallycat, it matters more on a gas stove than electric since you don't want the flames up the sides of the pan. Since you aren't buying for a specific person, it's hard to know what type of stove someone has, and I wouldn't worry about it. Somebody will appreciate it.

wallycat -- I wouldn't mind that stove too. : )
Caffelatte -- I have two "large" (ha) burners diagonal on my stove. And I could fit a large pan on the front since nothing to bump into. I just wasn't sure in general if a big deal that a 12+ pan could be used on a burner that is just 7 1/2 inches (that is what I have so guessing pretty common for many apartment type stoves). But the heat does go to the outer part so.... It was a great deal (and I was tempted myself to use when cooking up lots of veggies) so I got the pan to donate.
I got some great deals, but not as good as this Black Friday deal on Sur La Table's website. Whoever scooped this up before it sold out scored a great deal, a Staub Le Grande Oven with Glass Lid, 7.4 qt. for 99.96, suggested retail 549.95. I wonder how many they had. Way too big for me/no where to store it.
Thanks you two.

I am wondering if you have received the pan. My guess would be that the measurements included a handle and that the width at the burner was about 12 inches. That would fit fine on my burners or the large burners of most stoves, I would think.

Beth,
I received the pan yesterday -- and it is BIG and lots bigger than my largest burner! It will certainly hold lots of food. It is a more than 12 inches across and about 3 inches deep, and it looks like it tapers in a bit at the bottom, and I mean a bit. It has IMO a bizarre shaped helper handle.
I am going to donate it ---9.99 after rebate for a 12 inch mega pan from a known brand, IMO total bargain.
Thx.
