HI all,
I borrowed a friend's pasta press kitchenaid attachment, and didn't love it - I was thinking that I'd love a hand one more, so that it could be on the counter. Any recs? THANKS!

The pasta press -- you are talking about the one that extrudes rotini, macaroni or spaghetti? Not my favorite either, but I do like the roller/cutter set. Those will allow you to do pretty much the same as a counter top roller, but I find them easier and more successful than the counter top roller I had years ago (roll and roll and roll and the pasta was still thicker than I would have liked). Is the height a problem for the KA attachments? I am tall, but someone who is petite might not be as comfortable with them if the mixer starts at counter height. No reason you can't use the mixer on a shorter table when making pasta.
If you really want a hand crank type, it seem like Atlas is the one I hear mentioned.

Tried the KA pasta press a long time ago and HATED it. It went back to the store immediately. I have the rollers and love them. I have been using them for years. I mainly use the fettuccine cutter and make big sheets for lasagna. Rarely, i ever, do I use the linguine cutter. But that is just my families preference. It's very easy to use and clean.

Thanks! I wasn't clear - it was the KA press. I'm short, and I didn't like that it came down from so high. Also, it kept getting stuck, but perhaps I didn't flour the dough enough.

I'm not familiar with a pasta press. Are you referring to a pasta extruder. I have used the Imperia pasta machine 4 years and been very pleased. Sometimes I cut the pasta by hand. it depends on what I'm making.

The extruder is pickier about getting the right consistency on the dough. We had tried another brand years ago and it was the same thing. I don't remember flouring dough at all -- yours might have been a little on the damp side
If the top of a KA mixer on the counter is too high for you, try setting it on a table. That might be a more comfortable height for working with the attachments. Some hand crank models allow you to attach a motor to them -- and there are single purpose pasta making machines that are more of the extruder type.
