I cringed when I got to my #18 cookbook. It's an old copy of a Women's Day Collector's Cookbook from 1973. The cover is missing and it's pretty beat up. But it came to me from my grandmother's things, so I keep it for sentimental reasons over anything else. Today I am spending a bit of time without my splint, and things are looking up in that department, but I'm still not doing much with my left hand. So I thought I'd go out of the box and head for the section on beverages. Add in the ingredient orange, and I have found a recipe for Spiced Iced Tea that sounds intriguing. If I get another chance this week I will look for a recipe from this book that includes basil also, but I think the iced tea will be a tasty addition to my afternoons. Spiced Iced Tea 1/2 cup sugar Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon Grated rind and juice of 1 orange 1" Cinnamon stick 1/2 teaspoon whole cloves 4 cups hot double-strength tea Put all ingredients, except the last two, and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. bring to a boil and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Strain, add to tea and chill. When ready to serve, pour into tall ice-filled glasses. Makes 1 1/2 quarts..

The citrus juices come through loud and clear, but I'm thinking five minutes isn't really enough time for the cinnamon stick and clove to release much of their essence. Still, I'm sitting here sipping it hot, and it's a lovely little toddy. As it's about time for the gremlins to parade the neighborhood, I might rummage through the liquor cabinet and see if I have anything to splash into it. I think it will make a very good iced tea as well. I just used plain old Lipton tea bags, brewed double strength. Next time I'll use a nicer black tea. Or even a green or rooibos would be lovely. This is a nice cuppa!

I did not splash anything into the tea. It really was very good hot. I refilled my cup a second time and thought that it would be a delicious "mulled tea" to serve up punch bowl style with some lemon and orange slices floating in it. I really, really liked it. To booze it up, I think a splash of Bacardi Limon would be the perfect touch and make it more like a twisted tea.
I did save some to have as iced tea today.

I'm just not wrapping my head around the idea of orange flavor in with tomato and basil. I can "almost" see it, as basil has a slight licoricy flavor to it, and that makes me think of fennel, which goes great with oranges. But the tomato part is tripping me up.
I think you are brave for trying it.
We get a bushel of navel oranges every year from a local high school. I always intend we'll do some fun things with them, but then we start eating them and they are SO delicious that before we know it the box is gone and I'm wishing we had another.

Oh cookieee...another week has gone by and I still haven't played the game...I intend to...really I do. I have made a few new recipes from my to-try pile...but I see that is starting only next week. Well next week I won't be cooking--I will be served. I am cruising next week! Out of Port Canaveral. Hopefully I will get on track and do some posting when I get back.
