Is it just me, or do others feel the same way? I don't want to answer a survey or rate every purchase I make. I don't want to answer a few questions so you can track me even more than you do with the lure of "winning x $$". When I take my car to the dealership for regular maintenance, I don't need to be bombarded by emails, messages and mailing about the service. If there is a problem, I will let you know. When I am calling Comcast about my crappy internet, you should be thankful I have decided to not answer your survey at the end of the call. Chances are, I have been on hold for awhile and would not be as positive as you want me to be. And to the Lawn Care Co, I still have weeds on my lawn. I have answered your survey, complained, and it still does no good as you haven't come out to check the problem. Last treatment was yesterday, you are cancelled for next year!!! So there. Who's next.

I totally agree! I've started saying no to pretty much all survey requests. I shop online a LOT, so I get them a lot.
Along the same lines, when I'm shopping in the real world, no, I don't want to complete a credit card request today and no, I don't want to give you my e-mail address for every single transaction. The e-mail thing is really annoying. I get e-mails two to four times a day from Kohls. No lie. I shop there every once in a while, but multiple e-mails every day? How much do they think the average person shops? And then multiply that by all the stores that I shop at on occasion and it's a whole pile of daily e-mail sludge offering me coupons to come shop there. So I've started saying no I don't want to give them my e-mail address or phone # if they ask.

My motto is "Don't contact me, I'll contact you". To review an online purchase I would have to log in. No way! I do shop a lot at Amazon and they have all my info anyhow. For unwanted emails I search the text for "opt out" or similar. It's often well hidden in very fine print at the bottom. If you know it's there you will find it To the best of my understanding you can refuse to give your phone number when paying with a credit card and I've successfully denied so far. Send my receipt by email? No thanks. I'll save forests in other ways. Now if I could only stop all those catalogues - and it's not for lack of trying. Edited later: Survey exception. A great company helps us trim our tall trees once a year. Those trees were not well cared for by previous owners, some even planted in ridiculous places. The tree trimmers are masters in the art though service a bit pricey. Knock on wood but so far we've avoided big losses from storms. After each visit I gladly answer their survey and always allow them to use me as a reference.

Really, I must share with you what I consider to be the all-time worst survey request. It was from the hospital, relative to my sister's recent stay, listing an August 6 discharge date. This survey like so many others, assured us that completion was strictly optional, but that only the patient should provide responses. I threw it away. I was not pleased when the second request arrived in the mail a week or so later, scrawled a note on the papers and returned them to the hospital in the enclosed envelope. My message was something like, "Patient is unable to comply with your request having passed away in your facility on August 5." Come on hospital. Why are you sending out surveys to deceased patients?

I've done the e-mail receipt thing once at Sears. It sounded like an okay option, though I was trying to figure out if they had more theft that way. I could totally see walking out of the store, bag in hand, being stopped and saying "Oh, I had the receipt e-mailed" . In the amount of time it took me to think through this no receipt thing, they'd bagged my purchase and THEN the machine printed out a short stubby receipt that said my receipt had been e-mailed and put it in the bag with the clothes. Seriously, what was the point of e-mailing the receipt if you're going to print one out anyway? I don't get it.

Gail, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your sister. I hope someone actually read your reply and made changes to their computer system. I am sure there is a box that can be checked that doesn't send them out to patients that have passed away.

I'm with all of you on the survey ick as well. Even reading the reviews on amazon is so all over the map that it only confuses me on purchases rather than help me.
Gail, I am so sorry for the loss of your sister. You would think the hospital would have been clued in. I was routinely getting surveys and reminders for mammograms....ummmm, really ...from the place that surgically removed them both!!! GRRRRR.

Gail, I'm so sorry about your sister. As for the hospital, words fail me. wallycat, I'd call those reminders unethical.

Gail and Wallycat: Words fail me. The machines have made for much insensitivity these days. When they do things like this, it's gotta feel like being slapped in the face! We have to find a way to get HUMANS to be involved again or our world is going to be a very offensive place. To both of you, I'm sorry for what you have been through. <Edited to remove my rant about political emails after I -- doh!! -- came to and realized that my comment had nothing to do with SURVEYS. I was just ranting because this thread brought it out in me and I wanted to join in on the ranting. Sorry>

Lest everyone who'd been kind enough to express condolences think I was an ingrate, I was out of town, then down with the flu (anyone who saw my response in the "do you get a flu shot" thread has my permission to laugh at me.) Anyway, thanks all. I really did appreciate the kind thoughts.
