I was going through my spices and there are a few bottles that I haven't used on a long time.
So how do you use ground turmeric. In what kind of recipes? I have no idea what it tastes like. I think I've only used it once or twice. Good thing it was a free sample since not making good use of it. : )
Any spices that you want to use?
I pretty much use most often: cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, maybe oregano and ...
Thanks!

I never used turmeric much either until the last few years. Now I use it a lot. I would describe it as slightly bitter, earthy, and pepper like flavor. I use it in my chicken soup but here mainly for color so I usually only put 1 t. in a big pot. It makes the soup look so rich and we do eat with our eyes!! I also use it in Asian and Middle Eastern dishes. I love Hawaij spice mix (I make my own) which has turmeric as one of the components. This spice mix is also great in chicken soup and Gundi, a Persian chickpea dumpling soup. Turmeric is also a part of many curries. I have a pretty good spice pantry and I tend to make a lot of my own blends like ras el hanout, berbere, baharat etc... and some of these include turmeric as well. It is also great with lentils, especially red lentils, dals, and other bean dishes.

I find turmeric bitter and if I add it to my Indian curries, it can sometimes take on a life of its own. Interestingly, when I use curry powder, which has turmeric along with a few other spices as a blend, I think it makes things taste richer. Like using chicken soup instead of water...I sprinkle it into tuna salads, egg salads, curries (of course) and some stews.

Turmeric is one of the most used spices in Indian cuisine BUT it needs to be used cautiously, otherwise it will overpower the food. I never use turmeric raw; always cooked, and usually just quickly stir-fried in a little ghee. For a simple Indian spice mix, 1/2 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp cumin, 1 1/2 tsps coriander powder. You can finish the dish with a sprinkle of garam masala, which will add extra depth to the dish; add chiles or chile powder if you like the heat, stir-fry onion, garlic and ginger for a base; add yoghurt to make the sauce creamier, etc.
Curry powder is a mixture of many spices - usually heavy on the turmeric, mustard powder and fenugreek to make it yellow in colour. It´s really a quick fix, resolve anything mixture, and as it´s ground in an industrial grinder and jarred , the flavours tend to dissipate after about 4-5 months.

Turmeric powder is one of the widely used spices along with the Chili powder, ginger paste and is added in mostly every dish. I usually used it in Chinese soups, pastas and many more dishes, but If I discuss about its taste then it is having a quite bitter taste that's why it is added in food in small quantity as compare to other spices.

There is one recipe that I frequently used to cook because of its scrumptious taste which is Turmeric Rice and chicken which doesn't require the addition of many ingredients in it. Ingredients include: Take 1/2 kg of chicken, add 1tea spoon of salt, 1/4 black pepper, 2TB spoon of butter,1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric,1 chopped onion, 1TB spoon of ginger paste, and marinate the chicken thoroughly and then cook it for 30 mins and then add rice into it. Hope you will like this dish.
