The 24th is always, the Christmas Eve, "7 Fish / Shellfish Plates" prepared by my parents up on the northern Cape of Cadaquès, Girona.
The 25th is always a traditional roast .. And for those who do not eat meat, there is always a home made vegetarian or shellfish Pasta or Paella. Desserts are always assorted and traditional and also we are big fans of assorted cheeses and fruits. What are your traditional dishes or are you travelling to visit family ?

I don’t cook any traditional dishes year after year but growing up we always had Oyster Stew on Christmas Eve which I hated so I made myself a grilled peanut butter sandwich. Christmas dinner was a repeat of Thanksgiving with the addition of scalloped oysters.

No cooking traditions here either...I was raised athiest so zero celebrations. As an adult, I vacillate between hams or duck. We adore duck so pick that any chance we get. My first xmas with dating DH, I made a huge goose. What an experience.

We're Hungarian--ham and kolbasz/kielbasa, kiffles (apricot and nut) and nut roll on Christmas Eve and turkey on Christmas Day. We still do Christmas Eve like that, but our CD traditions have been set aside. My parents always throw a party for both sides of the family before Christmas and do a themed dinner. This year was Japanese--we had sushi (not made by us!), yakatori chicken thighs and shishitos, Japanese fried rice, and mochi (plus Christmas cookies).

Erin, first, DROOL on sushi! Your parents sound super-cool Second...I just learned that of all the language dialects I can easily pick up, Hungarian is NOTHING like any language and it is so difficult to learn!

They are super cool, wallycat I thought it was pretty brave of them and then so many of my family had already had sushi! I was surprised. Mochi was new to all though. Hungarian is most closely related to Finnish--weird, huh? Of course, same story as many families: my oldest aunt spoke it, but none of the other kids. Wish they had kept it up! I hope to go to Hungary one day.

On Christmas Eve we have prime rib, lasagna, meatballs, garlic bread. And on Christmas Day we have homemade tortellini en brodo! The tortellini was a family thing passed down and my Aunt and I now make them.

We're doing things a little differently this year. We (DH and I) usually spend Christmas Day with my mom and siblings and their families, but we decided that we didn't want to do the holiday traffic thing on Christmas. We had mini Christmas with my mom yesterday. I made Italian Wedding Soup for lunch, and Braciole and Sesame Semolina Bread for dinner. We broke with the Italian traditions and had mincemeat tarts and other cookies for dessert. We had a lovely day together. DH and I usually have an appetizer dinner for Christmas Eve. Tomorrow we will be having Ina Garten's Garlic Roasted Shrimp Cocktail, a few stuffed clams that I bought from "my" fisherman, and a cauliflower antipasto salad . There are a bunch of different cookies around from baking treats for friends so if we want dessert, we are all set. For Christmas Day, breakfast will be the French Twist bread that my family makes for Christmas morning breakfast. We usually have appetizers for lunch on Christmas day, so will will have more stuffed clams and fish cakes. For dinner, I am making Cooking Light's Garlic-Scallop Dumplings (from 1999) and Hot and Sour Soup. The dumpling recipe used wonton wrappers, but I am going to make them with dumpling wrappers. Back in the day, I used to make them a lot, but I haven't made them in a very long time and I have a bunch of scallops in the freezer. We went to a Fishmas dinner Tuesday night, so by the end of Christmas Day, we will have had an extended feast of 7 fishes. At dinner Tuesday night, we had oysters, crab, cod, shrimp, and scallops. We are mixing family traditions with other things. The long family traditions are French Twist, my dad's fish cakes which I've been making since he passed away, pizelles that my mom has made for as long as I can remember, last week I visited her and we made a batch for me to take home. Mincemeat tarts are a newer tradition. My mom used to doctor up jarred mincemeat and make a pie, but only she and my dad liked it so she stopped making it a long time ago. A friend of mine has been making her grandmother's mincemeat for a long time so with her help and some of her mincemeat, I started making the tarts for my mom and dad. Last year because of Covid, I made my own mincemeat for the first time. My mom's freezer is now stocked up with tarts for her to enjoy and share for the next few months. And now everyone in the family loves mincemeat tarts, so I make enough for everyone. I also left fish cakes with my mom for everyone to have for Christmas lunch. erin elizabeth my husband mother's family was Hungarian. He grew up with what his family called Hungarian Rolled Cookies that were made by his great aunt Jo. DH''s mom taught me how to make them. I have learned that these cookies are also called kiffles. I would make them when we visited his mom. I need to make a batch after Christmas.
