I was checking out the site and discovered you can "gift" someone. The first gift I clicked on was for a $2.99 monthly payment for the site.
If you click on someone's profile (not your own) you'll see the gift option.

It looks like you can gift someone Proboards Plus, which allows you to post advertising. I believe the basic version of Proboards is free. I know I didn't have to provide any credit card information to join, nor do I plan to.

This forum is free for the folks who set it up and for the members at this point and we are planning to have it stay that way. Administrators can choose plugins to enhance the site and they begin to cost money after we use up some initial credits. We aren't there yet and I don't think we will be. We've disabled attachments for the site; if we choose to allow attachments, we get a small amount of space to store the attachments before it will start to cost money. So we decided 'no attachments'. So, we think this will stay free for us.

When the administrators asked us to read the Proboards rules we agreed to when we joined = Until I read their Rule #13, I hadn't realized that each of us could be charged a fee, and that we understood that fee could be raised at any time. I posted this one morning about 2:30 am and immediately checked it to make sure it didn't need editing. At 10:00 am the post was missing.
From Admin: I know that I did not remove any message from you, LeaHamm. I don't believe that Bev did either.

Only if the moderators are taken over by their evil twins and decide that they want to monetize the site. Since our moderators have only exhibited great signs of generosity with their time and knowledge, I don't foresee this ever becoming a monetized site.
Proboards has the capability of being monetized, but it mostly used as a free forum platform.

Now if you provided your cc info I suppose that could be a different story. I notice at the bottom of the page there are ads and if you click on the link to remove them, you have to pay a fee. I can live with the ads so again, I didn't provide cc info.

We opted for the FREE forum (means we will have to be happy with advertisements and a few other limitations). They offer various 'plans' to groups -- again, ours is the FREE one.
Great Food Forum is free to use. No money has been asked of you (or of your volunteer managers). No credit card number requested of you (or us). When we set up this forum, we selected the FREE one offered, which means we get ads.
