OK -- we have gone from a 16 oz standard can size to 15.5 oz, 15 oz and now 14.5 oz, but have you noticed that the rims on cans are not as standard as you tend to think they are or should be? This wrecks havoc on my can openers -- the tuna we get at Costco cannot be opened with the OXO can opener. We can usually battle it out with the older style. Then today I called DH for help and he wound up going out to the garage to get an even older one -- pretty sure it is an old swing away that I had before we were married 30 years ago. While the tuna cans seem more rounded and shallow rimmed, the can today was a very thin rim. Is this one more impact of the pandemic? Or just another manufacturing shift to tick off customers? I'm not sure if the OXO stripped it's gears trying to open this lastr can, but I think it is possible and was about to order a new one to at least have on stand by -- then I wondered if I am going to need more than one kind. Is anyone else having issues opening cans?

Beth, you are not alone in this. I have no idea what type of can opener really works with the new types of cans.

I have 3 OXO and they now rarely work on most cans. The two I have that are dreamy are Swing-away (though I do not know why it develops rust on the stainless parts when I wash, dry immediately after use) and the WMF profi (the price on amazon looks ridiculous. I'm sure I never paid that but it has been quite a few years). The WMF has NEVER failed me. Ever.

I agree, Traildoggie -- once you use the smooth edge ones, you don't want to use the old ones that leave a sharp edge. That's the one we have in the garage, not that it gets a lot of use there, but at the time it seemed like we might have coffee cans or other cans they we would use outdoors for something -- maybe want to cut the other end off.
DH opened a can of tomato paste tonight without a problem, so it doesn't appear the OXO stripped its gears. I don't need to buy anything just yet, but I may still take a look. I would like to be able to use one can opener for everything, so I might look at the WMF -- not a brand I am familiar with.

I need a few can openers. we have a vacation cabin and a camper. I have a (one or two) can opener each place. I donated all the "thru the lid" ones. too easy to whack yourself on the edge and they didnt work well anyway.
I'm not sure if this type is more expensive? they were all around $20. I like the pull tab lids that are showing up more but will still keep a decent can opener around. each one I have works a little differently. don't toss the packaging before looking at how each one works. most have a pincher to grab the lid. I would not buy anything else. there are so many its hard to tell what to try, but I would start by focusing on ones that cut the lid off and don't go thru the lid.

for the can openers that open from the side and leave no dangerous edges....do the contents spill out easier/unintentionally as you are cutting??

no. never had that happen. I have at least 4 different ones, each a little different. I was having problems with the "thru the lid" openers so in my dare-devilishly fearless manner , tried a different kind of can opener. there are many that will work, hardest is deciding which you want to try.

Wallycat, I've never had anything spill out of a can based on the way the lid was removed. There is a certain amount of space at the top of the can, usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
Traildoggie, it isn't the size of the cans that I'm having an issue with. It is the depth, thickness and shape of the rims that either doesn't allow the blad to reach and cut the can or on the other end of the spectrum doesn't give the opener enough to grip. Some are one extreme and some are the other. AND some are just difficult. But I do not share your affection for pull tab or pop top cans. They are convenient when they work, but a pain when they don't --sometimes literally. I had a can that didn't open properly -- wound up heading to an emergency room to get stitches for the gash that cut down to the knuckle bone. I was lucky that it was on the top and not the sides where the tendons or ligaments could have been cut, but it was plenty ugly.

Beth that is terrible! I agree sometimes they are hard to pull off all the way and can get stuck at half mast. yours is a cautionary tale for the rest of us. I have not had any cans the newer can opener didn't grab on to. I don't use lots of canned foods. name brands of diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beans. occasional tomato paste, black olives, and costco chicken. maybe I haven't tried any problem foods?

We don't use a lot of canned food -- mostly occasional tuna and tomato products when needed -- we grow them and get them from our CSA -- put up some of thoise, but we run out and I like canned crushed tomatoes for pizza sauce and do not make tomato paste. The incident that sent me for stitches was a pet food can when we were trying to get away from dry food to see if a lower carb diet would help one of our dogs with her weight. We switched brands and have not ahd another problem.
