I am becoming more than a little worried about both "election fallout" (violence, protests, tec) and the rise in covid infections, and being able to get to the grocery store (along with, once arriving, the store being well-stocked). I've always kept a stocked pantry (one of the results of a Sams Club membership for only the two of us....) but, should I be looking ahead and doing more? What do you all think?

I generally have a well-stocked pantry, but I have continued to build up stock of the things that I had difficulty getting earlier in the pandemic. For me, that was the toilet paper we like, the dish soap I like, disinfectant wipes, hydrogen peroxide (DH uses about a quart a week in his waterpik because of gum issues), yeast (my bulk supply is low, so I just bought a new 1 pound bag), I have built up a good supply of flour, but I am keeping an eye on that. I am baking more whole wheat breads so I need to build up that supply a little. The pandemic was the thing that got me to start cooking beans rather than buying canned beans, so I am buying more of them now. I use a lot of canned tomatoes and those were hard to come by, so I am buying more of them. I bought a bunch of rice and pasta in the spring, but we have not used them as much as I expected, so I will hold off on them. There are some odd things that we use tons of like hot banana pepper rings, those things aren't critical, but they make us happy so I stock up on them. I buy 90% of my meat from local farmers and my freezer is stocked up. I bought extra frozen veggies in the spring, but found we didn't need them as much as I thought I might so I am working through them. I'm not sure if I will restock them. I also buy eggs locally and didn't have trouble getting them, though the price went up. In the spring, I did a bunch of huge shopping trips, now I am trying to purchase a few extras each trip.
I am looking carefully at what I bought in the spring and am donating some items that I bought but did not use. I always planned our meals, but I have become a more careful planner and shopper and am using what I have learned to plan ahead for what winter may bring. I am also using the my meal planning application (Plan to Eat) to track my pantry and freezer inventory.

Not to make light, but we just got back from costco and I'm good for wine (and cheese) till the end of the year...maybe. We'll see how the election goes. I'm running out of space for all my stock. Things I bought that were not typical for me were white rice (basmati) and white flour (to make bread or pizza dough). I stocked up on canned salmon (fishing has been horrible for 2 years here) and dried mushrooms, which I can use in a variety of ways. I bought Better than Bouillon chicken stock (costco) instead of cans of stock even though the ingredients are not 100% as I prefer.
I have some frozen and some canned fruit and veggies. DH has decided he likes salads at lunch (who knew!) so that is something I try to have on hand for several days but obviously won't keep...and if we had to switch up meals, we would.
Patti, you sound super organized. I'm envious **blush**

Patti, I just watched the Plan to Eat intro and not sure how it helps with pantry and freezer...can you expound on it if you have time?
Also updating a few other items I stocked up on...Bulgar wheat and couscous, a few aseptic pkgs of non-dairy milk, cocoa powder, and made sure I have a month or two back up on my vitamins/supplements I take. Cat food and litter, also.

While I don't think we will have another total shutdown like we did last spring, I do think more targeted shut downs or roll backs may occur. And yes....even though I am well stocked most of the time, I have been trying to make sure my "stockpile" does not diminish lately in fear of things getting worse as the winter approaches. Plus winter weather can be so unpredictable so being able to get out may be limited for that reason alone which is another reason to make sure the shelves don't empty out in my pantry, freezer etc... So while I am not going out to stock up and hide under my rock, I am still stocking up a bit!

I am trying to shop less often as COVID numbers are starting back up, so we are stocking a little extra. We have always kept a well stocked pantry and we belong to a CSA so we get eggs and most of our veggies through them. We also had the opportunity to buy a side of beef earlier in the year, and since we cook for our two senior dogs since one had some health issues, we jumped on that. Generally, I'm trying to have what I normally would plus one or two on hand. As COVID numbers eased here, we have made a few senior hour trips to Costco and Trader Joe's, but those may be put on hold again. We may not always have exactly what we want, but we will have something to eat and manage to get by. Good cooks can always come up with something, right?

I guess that, because we are all cooks, we tend to have more well-stocked cupboards than those who don't. 😉 I knew a woman who shopped every morning for what she and her husband would eat that day and that I just could not understand! I am going to clean out and organize my pantry today, and the storage cupboard in the utility room that I use for overflow. I do need to buy some organizational stuff like mini-shelves, etc. but it will be good to see exactly what I have and what I may need. Definitely getting a large package of tp from Sam's though! I don't think that we will have the shortages that were experienced last spring, but it would be good to go out even less often as I already am. For safety's sake.

I always like to stock up a bit before the winter gets in full gear --- between possibly being stuck in because of snow or just not wanting to go food shopping if the weather is bad. And so not a fan of going to the supermarket before a snowstorm and deal with the crowds/empty shelves, same with pandemic panic.
My food combinations might be "interesting" during those time but that's ok. Beans and rice/couscous and whatever/hummus/pasta/TJ peanut butter cups etc --- all is good. Ha. And add in the pandemic, even more reason to have some extras on hand. Nothing extreme, just grabbing a few more things when I go food shopping. And with a small apartment, I can't really store that much --- so many might get a kick out of what I call "stocking up"
Take care everyone!
