I just switched up some of my services and now paying $158 for cable, internet, land line (just like to have) with Comcast. My cell phone is separate.
I'd love to trim those costs (I was paying more when I had Verizon and Comcast) so no surprise I saved with bundling -- but we all know how the costs will then often jump the next year etc.
I always hear about cutting cable but in some cases ditching it and getting other services is often not much of a savings. I tried to see if I could cut my internet costs but limited in providers in my bldg so I "think" I'm stuck with Comcast (unless other ways not familiar with). I looked into Starry but they don't service my bldg.
I'm going to call Comcast and see how much it would be if I cut cable (and hope they would offer me a good deal for me to stay) or get any other discounts/specials. Youtube tv is around $65, sling is I think $30. Just heard of Pluto. And there's Hulu + and on and on.
Thanks!

We have used YouTube tv for over a year...and other than the price increase a few months ago are quite happy...we get the local stations, a condition I had when we decided to give up cable...and while Cox tried to tell us we needed to raise the speed of our internet to be satisfied we didn’t do it and have not experienced issues...

Thanks for replying. I was also thinking of YT tv (and I want local TV too).
When I asked Comcast awhile back of having just internet and not a bundle of internet and cable. I don't think it was much of a savings once you add the YT TV. Perhaps I wasn't getting that good of a deal --- it is so frustrating all the different packages that offer (what the offer for new subs etc). I did get a stellar deal years back when I just had cable -- just a quick ask and I saved $$ (and some years just a small savings (and for all I know I was overpaying with the discount).
Did you have both cable and internet with Cox, and then delete cable once you went to YT TV?
I read all the time about people cutting cable and saving often a good amount of money each month. Would love to know how they do it. Perhaps they had a super expensive cable package. Of course there would be more savings if I went with some of the other streaming services like Sling.
Thanks!

Our neighbor uses Hulu and gets local tv and is happy with it......I am not sure there is a cheap way to get rid of cable and still have streaming with local stations and save a lot...but I don’t regret changing...we did have cable, internet and phone with Cox...and we had the lowest internet speed and a big bill every month...

I had considered Sling until I found out it was a subsidiary/part of DISH. Those people are evil. Actually had folks call my home and scream at me, call me vile names, swear at me just because I dropped their service. I was going to come back the following year, like Costco suggested, to keep costs down, but now...no-ever-effing-way.
We also tried an antenna set up for just local channels but we live in nowhere'sville (even though very pretty) so no service. One canadian channel.
For those using Youtube and/or HULU, can you expound on it...costs (average)? Do you need an antenna? DH's biggest gripe is he is spoiled with DVR functions so it would require an outlay on that before we did anything.
We pay about 50 for internet and 79 for directTV. I purchased a stand-alone VOIP phone set up. There are no landlines out here.

Hi Wallycat,
Don't quote me on the accuracy.....
Youtube TV is $64.99 "Your favorite channels, unlimited DVR space, and more - without the hidden fees" 85+ channels =64.99, no contract"
Hulu + Live is similar at $55.
Both the above, offer live tv etc, not the same as what we think of YT or Hulu,
So more and more people are trying to cut the cord from the traditional cable providers and use the streaming options above (there are other ones as well) since often a great cost saving and also always the person to customize more on what they are looking for (for those big tv watchers)
If someone say was paying say $150 for cable, and then they went with one of the above, the savings would be big. Of course, prices subject to change.
The issue that I have with my provider, is that if I take away cable part of my package, my other costs go up for internet etc.
If someone was looking to really cut costs there is Sling TV (one of their plans would give me I think all the channels I would need ---- MSNBC, Food Network etc etc. But they don't give local channels (I can get a local NBC probably based on location). But if someone had an antennae they could get locals.
Now if someone was really looking to save $$, there are cheaper options like Sling TV. For example there Sling Blue package is $30/month, no contract, 3 device streams, free 10 hour DVR (I think you can get more, some of the channels: NFL Network TNT Fox News MSNBC CNN Investigation Discovery History Channel AMC
But they don't offer local channels -- but there are other ways to get that if the person wanted to.
Can you tell me about your phone setup. I often get poor cell reception in my bldg (I think because concrete) --- I do have a landline thru Verizon that I don't use often but it was part of a package. I wonder if something like Magic Jack or Vonage would work?
Thanks!

We started with Obihai but that got sold and now I don't know if it is still available. It was a one-time outlay to pay for the interface and then we used our google-voice, which was free. It worked great for a few years till Obihai got sold and google-voice no longer supported it. Thankfully (and I never know how long it will last) the interface works well with a recommended service, Anveo, which is $40/year. I can now use google voice with google hangouts on any computer or cell (if you download the app, free) and have wifi. I think with the two you mentioned, you will be paying a monthly fee and I have no idea what the costs are.
