So what's your favorite comfort food dinner? Chicken pot pie, a pint of ice cream, pasta and more pasta, or ??

Sheesh, I wrote a long thing about my new fav and somehow wiped it out. Well, anyway: our new fav is homemade bread stuffing with fried eggs on top. Weird but so good! (And with an artichoke mushroom cream sauce on top.) Yeah, our own invention. The good: made with whole wheat bread toasted in oven AND quite decent even if only olive oil -- husband tries to sneak OUT the butter on me -- for the sauteed onion and celery. The bad: using butter and canned mushroom soup for the base of the artichoke cream sauce. (It was a desperate move one night, and now I am sold on it. YES, I know about how we've all given up cooking with canned Campbell's...however, for once it has overcome my own objections! The sauce, for some strange reason is permeated by the quartered artichoke taste...which is a very good thing. Surprising that the flavor of them dominates like it does. A good surprise.) This meal is my comfort food/guilty pleasure of late. <shockingly naughty and worth every guilty bite>

Hi, everyone. I am glad to hear from some of you. A few days into it here in OH and it already feels like a lifetime. I miss people!!!
Buttered noodles and broccoli. Peanut butter toast. Baked potato. Popcorn.
Before things got crazy, I made sure I had a chicken so I could make soup! I also am perusing my freezer and I think scalloped potatoes and ham and turkey tetrazzini are on the menu. I should probably make stir-fry, but I will probably make breaded chicken and roasted broccoli instead. I also made sure to have apples--I've been into Galas lately--because I'll eat one of those every day. I wish I would have stocked up on M&Ms or PB cups though! I will be going to the store eventually though so maybe there will be some left.
Catbatty, I really like that Stovetop Stuffing and creamed soup turkey casserole, but experimented with making a white sauce instead of the creamed soup. Butter, flour, a bit of milk or cream, and chicken broth. Flavor with sauteed whatever or some Parm. Not shaming you--just suggesting an alternative I found good! Still need to work on the Stovetop
Applecrisp, you didn't tell us your go-tos!

Hi everyone...hunkered down here in Omaha...
I think it would have to be home made soup and fresh baked bread....current favorite comfort soup is either chicken noodle or Sausage Bean and Kale...and if I add dessert it would be Apple Pie...

Food in general, LOL, but some specifics: roasted chicken and mac & cheese are wonderful.

Mine would have to be similar to Emptynestmom....soup and homemade bread are big comfort foods for me. That and beans. This past weekend I made Stuffed cabbage rolls in soup form with little turkey brown rice meatballs. YUMMY and good during these tough times. Ice cream and cookies are pretty darn good too!!! Stay safe everyone.

I'd go for any of your comfort dinners. And Emma, who knows that could be my favorite. Topped off with some mocha chip ice cream. Maybe roasted chicken and mashed potatoes or some kind of cheesy pasta dish. Or .....
Thanks for those that posted.

Soup is comfort food to me. Coming down with a bad cold for Easter one year I prepared smoked salmon chowder - partly based on a recipe posted by KCSoccer on the old board. After enjoying that I no longer felt sorry for myself - stuck indoors with a gorgeous spring day beckoning outside. With any cold front here in Texas soup will be on the menu. This winter curried chicken soup with rice and chopped fresh tomatoes has been a house favorite.

Ironic - my Husband and I were just chatting about what our comfort foods are! For myself, depending on the situation/how unwell or stressed I am: buddha bowls/poke bowl, especially if there is an egg on top A rice and bean burrito from my co-op Saag Paneer and naan Raman noodle soup with pork dumplings (from a local Japanese place) Pho Fried egg sandwiches Grilled cheese sandwiches Take-n-bake pizza from our favorite pizza place stuffing and gravy fresh bread butternut squash soup made with vanilla beans ...I just realized this is kinda a weird list.

Call Sheriff Gumbeaux. Blatant advertising.
Sheriff is investigating, handcuffs at the ready, a cell is being prepared, soup is on the menu for prisoner (tonight's is Vegetarian Bean Soup--but we had to leave out the beans because we were out of them--also out of vegetables).

Stuffed peppers...Homemade vegetable soup....meatloaf and baked potatoes are always good. But MY comfort food is my Homemade spaghetti sauce over thin pasta.~YUM~Tomatoes are on the vine ripening as I type this. It's time to can more spaghetti sauce. This year as long as my tomatoes are prolific, I will also make salsa. We did 12 pints last year and they did not last long~@!

I've been looking for one for years and haven't found a favorite yet. I always go back to Classico's Traditional Sweet Basil Spaghetti Sauce. TIA.

so the bar is not real high here.....papa murphys take and bake pizza. or any other kind of pizza as long as its vegetarian. lots of vegies and cheese. with red pepper flakes on top. pesto. nice chewy crust. a Tostado with grilled chicken and avocado and hot sauce. I think I could eat those two things alternating every night for a long time. and crusty french bread anytime.
Ive been doing WW for quite a few months so have not had pizza at all, but tostados will fit in. I could have pizza but I eat too much of it.

Oh gosh, that storm was horrible. I grew up in Iowa and still have friends and family in CR/IC and a lot of them suffered major damage. Some of the photos I've see are just mind boggling. I lived through a tornado and the damage from this Dorecho is 100 times worse. Glad you're safe and so sorry about the power outage and loss of food .

Thanks---I shouldn't complain, we're both safe and sound, there was no damage to the house--but holy wow did we lose a lot of trees/big limbs. Even cutting up as much as we can ourselves, we're looking at $$$ to get it all hauled away. And yes, the thought of throwing out sea scallops, shrimp, duck breasts, gorgeous farm-raised beef, etc., is tearing at my heart, especially now with so many people out of working and struggling to stay fed. We're running a small generator (we have salt water fishtanks, so we have to be able to run the pumps/aerator) and hoping the house itself doesn't warm up to much--if the tanks get too warm, our only option is floating ziplock bags of cold water/ice cubes in them to try to keep the temp down and it's a very imprecise process, it's easy to lose fish/corals.
The storm damage has been sobering, even for someone who's lived through 30+ yrs of Iowa tornadoes, blizzards, etc. It was just astonishing.

Gilgamesh-So sorry to hear about the storm fallout but glad you are safe. We are just moving on as well here from Tropical storm Isaias. Fortunately we have a generator so I did not lose any food and we are all safe too. We had a big branch come down in our backyard but did not hit anything and we were trapped in our neighborhood (sort of) for 3 days. I say sort of because if you drove up over the curb on the "exit" to our neighborhood you could sneak under the wires. They still have not repaired the pole and raised the wires and this is over a week out now!! All they have done is removed the tree that pushed the pole down. By doing that, the wires were elevated enough so you could drive under them. The wires and pole were intact (albeit pole is bent over and wires hanging too low still) so they turned our power back on but I am guessing when they finally do come back to definitively repair the line/pole, they will turn us off again for a few hours. Our generator is just a small one that runs the basics (water, heat, a few lights/outlets, and refrigerators/freezers) but I think we are going to look into estimates for full house generators. These storms are becoming more frequent, more severe, and power outages longer. STAY SAFE ALL!!

Wow gilgamesh. Sorry to hear about the food, but glad you are OK. If you start cooking the most fragile stuff you might get more time out of it and then can (maybe?) refreeze it when it all comes back on.

Hope everyone is OK. I am from the midwest and know storms only too well too. I'm so sorry for the food loss. That is gut-wrenching. I'm glad you're OK though. Can you contact your home owners insurance about the loss? Some policies cover losses of x-amount from food.

Sure will McGee....let me pull out my recipe. Too funny..but that is our sauce of choice when I am out. I've tried Prego, Ragu, Newmans, generic stuff..and nothing is the same.

I’ve been reading all about it in The Gazette - Absolutely horrifying. Most of my friends suffered structural damage but thankfully none were injured. I cannot believe there hasn’t been more media coverage. I actually sent the Biden/Harris campaign an email telling them they should go visit and survey the damage because it could go a long way with on-the-fence voters but apparently they didn’t heed my advice. I also sent an email to CNN early last week telling them to cover it - they also failed to heed my advice. I did see Ashton Kutcher and Zach Johnson trying to bring attention to it. $4 billion in damage - amazing. Btw - did you see the photo of the approaching Derecho? Crazy scary. Glad your safe. Do you have power yet?
Oh, and I understand Trump is visiting tomorrow.

Gilgamesh, I take it the freezer all had to go, but I hoe you were able to keep the fish going. I gave up on our aquarium years ago -- we had a virus that spread and anything that didn't get taken out by the virus seemed to get knocked out by the medication.
Our comfort foods vary -- meatloaf, but I don't make it often, chicken or turkey tetrazzini, soup or chili, and a newer favorite I call picante shrimp -- somewhat similar to a shrimp creole but so simple. I lightly cook the shrimp in a deep skillet, dump a jar of our homemade picante sauce over it and may add a can of tomatoes. If I add tomatoes, I may adjust the seasoning with a little chili powder-- pasilla negro and/or ancho -- a little heat of needed. Served over rice. Oh - red beans and rice too. Guess I'm a southern girl.

Thanks---actually, the bottom layer of stuff in the chest freezer was still frozen solid when we finally got the power back after 5.5 days (I was shocked) but yeah, everything else had to go. We had very well fed raccoons and possums for several weeks as I tossed stuff out.
The fish came through fine (although what a pain--eventually the generator died, but fortunately, my clever husband about a year ago had climbed up into the attic crawlspace and dropped a line that runs out to the garage to a power convertor you can hook up to a car, so then we had to have one of the cars sitting running in the driveway for the last 2.5 days of the outage), didn't lose anyone. And then a week ago, the seal on the front tank popped and it started to leak. DH spent an entire day doing emergency re-patriation of the fish and all the live corals into the other tanks, siphoning out the tank, pulling out all the rock and sand, etc. We hauled the tank onto the front walkway, and he spent another day disconnecting all the electricals, the auto-dosing, and the monitoring systems. He's pretty well had it with this hobby, we've lost a lot of our favorite fish over the last 8 months or so, we think to various bacteria/parasitic infections. If he could snap his fingers and have all the tank set ups and everything just disappear, I think he'd do it in a heartbeat.
