I get a lot of recipes from the Eating Well website but something happened recently to the recipe pages. There is a lot of white space and when the print option is selected, many more sheets of paper are required. I used to be able to print a recipe on one page. Now, it takes four or five pages. I don't know if it is Eating Well or my browser. I've tried another browser and gotten the same result. Am I the only one?

Someone mentioned this same thing over at the Mastercook discussion group. Like you, they tried using other browsers but those failed to fix the problem. What I would do is highlight and copy each section to a text editor page, make edits, and then print from there. (UNTIL THEY FIX IT, LET's HOPE.) Richard, catbatty moved my thread from the food thread over to this category. yes, the new EW format is nuts. I said exactly the same in my post of several days ago. I don't know how to compress the ridiculously spread out format. I use Edge. one day it was all normal, the next day everything spread out over 4-5 pages. I can't figure out a way to print. I tried copying to Open Office thinking I could edit it to remove the space but cant do it. I tried emailing it to myself and cant change anything that way either. I wrote a note to the editor complaining. have not heard back. If you figure a way to do it, please report back.

OH? Is it photos of the sections, I wonder? I should go look. So buried in stuff at the moment. Tables?? Weird.

Please post an url from Eating Light so I, too, can go see this. I DO BELIEVE YOU...that's 3 of you I've seen post about this. But curiosity makes me want to see. I did try once just now...and no problem copying it out. Don't know why. www.eatingwell.com/recipe/270980/frozen-grapefruit-margaritas/?printviewI went to PRINT and then highlighted the recipe and copied it out. Here: Frozen Grapefruit Margaritas Rating: Unrated Swap out some of the usual lime juice in your margaritas with fresh grapefruit juice for a refreshing spin on the classic drink. Red grapefruit makes for a particularly pretty cocktail. Unlike many frozen margaritas served at restaurants, these cocktails have no additional sweetener. By Paula Forbes active: 10 mins total: 10 mins Servings: 6 Nutrition Profile: Dairy-Free Nut-Free Gluten-Free Low Fat Vegetarian Egg Free Soy-Free Low Added Sugars Vegan Ingredients 3-4 grapefruit ¾ cup tequila ¾ cup Cointreau ¼ cup lime juice 3 cups ice cubes Kosher salt (optional) Directions Step 1 Slice 1 grapefruit into thin wedges for garnishing. Squeeze enough of the remaining 2 to 3 grapefruit to get 3/4 cup juice. Combine the juice, tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and ice cubes in a blender; puree until smooth. If desired, rub the rims of 6 cocktail glasses with 1 squeezed grapefruit half, just enough to wet them, and dip into salt to lightly coat. my printer will take 3 pages to print the simple drink recipe. above the print window, it shows how many pages it will take www.eatingwell.com/recipe/267229/cabbage-lo-mein/?printview this is from an email this morning. it takes 5 pages to print it. everything is ridiculously spaced out. pictures don't print. I have a normal home HP printer reasonably new. I tried sizing down the print to 50% but it makes print tiny, uses the same number of pages. there is empty double space between each line of print.

The only way I've been able to overcome the white-space issue when copying is to paste into MS Word and then go through several formatting steps. It does work but should not be necessary and I cannot figure out how to get rid of the squares in front of each ingredient line.
Printing directly from the webpage, as Traildoggie showed, is not something I will do.

Traildoggie: I used Mastercook's online recipe importer tool to grab it for you (below). I was testing to see how IT would handle the new EW problem. It did really well. I only had to remove the word 'advertisement' that showed up in an empty space within the directions section. SO, until they fix this problem, either use the Mastercook import tool, if you have it and THEN print...or find some way to copy (perhaps from their PRINT window) to some text editor and edit and then print. Me, I usually use various user-made tools that clean up recipes prior to import into MC. I have a program called NoteTab (they do sell a free version)...and I copy stuff to there...and make edits there and THEN print things. Please holler anyone if you want me to grab you some more EW recipes that won't easily print or edit/print for you. ~ Catbatty * Exported from MasterCook * Cabbage Lo Mein - EatingWell Recipe By :By LAUREN GRANT Serving Size : 4 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons sesame oil -- divided 3 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 12 ounces boneless -- skinless chicken breast, cut into 1/4-inch slices 8 ounces lo mein noodles 1 teaspoon chile-garlic sauce 3 tablespoons vegetable oil -- divided 5 ounces mushrooms -- thinly sliced 4 cloves garlic -- minced 2 tablespoons chopped fresh ginger 1 bunch scallions -- thinly sliced 2 cups small broccoli florets (about 1 large crown) 1 red bell pepper -- sliced 1 cup snow peas -- halved 4 1/2 cups thinly sliced napa cabbage (1/2 head) 3/4 cup unsalted chicken broth 1 teaspoon cornstarch Step 1 Combine 2 tablespoons sesame oil, soy sauce and crushed red pepper in a large bowl. Richard, I'm not a MS Word user...but I suspect that saving in PLAIN TEXT would be helpful...to some other text editing program. In my Notetab program I can highlight the ingred section and press a key that makes the ingredient section move to flush left margin. Anyway, you might want to try saving to Wordpad or Notepad that come with Windows. I bet Eating Well is getting TONS of response from online readers!! I wonder if they are frantically trying to fix...instead of enjoying relaxed holidays. Bet they are. Let me know if I can help you grab any. Catbatty, you may be on to something. I tried copying the recipe at the beginning of this thread and pasting it into Notepad and that was successful. All of the Eating Well formatting was gone. But we shouldn't have to go through all of that. Why did they change?

I do not have Mastercook or Word. I don't see anything called Wordpad or Notepad or anything similar. I have the word processor part of Open Office, a free program. I cant see how to edit /remove spaces. I tried selecting and removing sections I didn't need but it didn't work. the ads don't print thankfully.
the nice thing about the EW recipes was they were easy to print. (nutritional info never did print) if I wanted it, I wrote it in after printing. I stopped pulling magazine pages for recipes because this was easier to see, read, and file, I can write notes on the page. . printed pages held up better than tear outs from the mag. they run recipes I missed or never tried. I don't want to put recipes into a computer program.
If this is not resolved I will probably drop the magazine. don't want this ridiculous amount of paper wasted and not file-able. it is too frustrating.

Traildoggie, There must be some plain text program on your computer that you can use. Windows has them built-in. Maybe you use a Mac. I've never. Don't know what they come with. One idea would be to subscribe to the hardcopy mag and copy on copier...to get paper copy that is clean of junk. (I doubt you want to try that...but just trying to brainstorm here.) Word processing programs, like Word or it's clone, have special codes in them...those things can make for issues when wanting just plain text. Friends of mine who use Word to first look at a recipe, then go on to save-as Text...which removes all the behind-the-scenes coding. THEN, they import into their recipe programs or make printouts. Otherwise, all that hidden special coding mucks up the process and won't allow proper importing into recipe programs like Mastercook. THAT's how I know to go with plain text for most things I do with my own recipes. Thanks Wallycat for mentioning that those extra sections can be removed by checking them OFF. I'll give that a test, too. Traildoggie, you might want to give that a try, too. Richard, I hope saving to text has fixed you. Again, I'm happy to get you recipes so let me know of any. (If Windows users, look in your programs for Microsoft Notepad. Should be there.) You can always grab a free copy of NoteTab. I love that program and have used it for decades. www.notetab.com It has a nice 'pasteboard' feature...you turn that on and anything you copy or cut will be grabbed to it. Saves money because don't have to buy one of those copy capture programs that I always used to attempt to use.

I think you can even email it to yourself and set the email to plain text, then highlight and print "selected" and you should be able to get just what you select. Plus you'll have a back up copy in email--create a folder and move them all there. Just brainstorming with Catbatty.

I found something called OneNote. (thought it was a music program). will see if that works.. will test and see. also will try the email to plain text I didn't notice before. the nice thing about the EW recipes that get delivered daily is they might be from this months magazine, or maybe from 5 or 10 yrs ago. its a nice mix. many have reviews attached. did not buy Microsoft Office with the last computer. Wordpad or Notepad aren't included. I used to copy from the magazine but I don't save mags past a year. dark colored pages especially do not copy well, as recipes that jump pages.
I may not be here for a day or two. DH is having a routine medical procedure. I will get back shortly. Thank you for working on this and for your ideas. I'm not done .... If it gets too fussy, I will drop the whole idea. I like the recipes but there are limits.

Still around this morning. DH is getting a colonoscopy tomorrow ( bad family history) so you would think we'd be used to this but the prep is worse this time. The One note program is not available, linked to an expensive Microsoft package thing. this is a decent not fancy HP desktop. when I bought, I was assured it had a word processing program, in writing, but it does not. I added open office. I will go fuss with open office and see if I missed something.
when I uncheck the check boxes in email for images, sale items, nutrition, (ads don't print) I still have a 5 page printout.

Hope all goes well for hubby. Your HP should have plain text editors. They have always come built into Windows computers. Look down at lower left corner of your screen, there is a Window icon there, left-click on that and type in: notepad That should bring up your plain text NOTEPAD program. It's an editor (free), but without any fancy coding (found in Word and fancy word processing programs) that can mess up recipes sometimes. We'll be thinking of your hubby and hoping he gets great reviews at doc.

Understand 'Im sure there are basic things I am probably not aware of. one thing, HP is DH's system, mine is a Dell. the screen is HP.
Ive tried copying the email to Open office. it seems like one recipe comes with all the coding that went with the entire email a vast amount of stuff, recipes, pictures. I started selecting and backspacing this off, but this is not reasonable.
the window icon gives a list of programs, that's where I've looked, no Notepad. anything related to Word does not work without an expensive subscription. that's where I found Onenote but it doesn't work without buying the expensive package. cant find anything that sounds like it is used for text. interestingly, I printed a different recipe off an EW email yesterday. worked fine, printed in one page, but back to the cabbage lo mein, and it's 5 pages. Thanks so much for your efforts.
editor@eatingwell.com <editor@eatingwell.com>; I have written to EW 2x now. cant imagine others aren't aggravated with this.

There are other FREE plain text editors you can install. If you have Windows computer (I know nufin' about MAC computers) you should have plenty of choices. Microsoft products come pre-loaded on computers, the basic ones...not Word...but there is a WordPad that should also be on any Windows computer. If you can't find Notepad or Wordpad, you might want to load up some others that are online. I've always had several of them (for various reasons). I'll go see which ones I have or have had and will let you know. I'm guessing that any HP or Dell will have all you need though. For some reason, you aren't seeing them. Instead of eyeballing, try typing into that Windows icon thing. That should open up any programs you have...well, the list of them. Another I do if I'm unsure what is installed on my computer, I click on that Windows icon and I go to Settings... and look for Programs (add/remove) and that will provide loooong list of everything that is loaded into computer and activated.

Whoops you are right. when I type in wordpad a window shows up. it does not show in the alphabetical list.
so I copy the recipe in question into this and then try to edit it? is that right?

Yes, try that. Do the edits, BUT THEN SAVE-AS and choose the plain text option. (Wordpad is not truly a plain text editor, but should do the job when you save to text.) IF that fails, then we are back to looking for Notepad or some other similar program you can download and install. I WILL GO PLAY WITH IT ON MY WORDPAD, TOO. HOPE I'm not misleading you on this. CORRECTION: If you don't want to save the recipe to your computer, you don't need to save-as text (using Wordpad). Just make your edits and print. I just tried that and it works. I now have fairly concise printouts of two recipes in my hot little hands! Whoops you are right. when I type in wordpad a window shows up. it does not show in the alphabetical list. so I copy the recipe in question into this and then try to edit it? is that right?

Yes! I got it to print in Wordpad! its hard to clip off the extra spaces and not chop off words that need to be there. I will look more closely at recipes before deciding to print them, that's for sure. I got a spinach salad on 2 pages, probably could get it to one page if I get good at eliminating extra line spaces. it appears not all EW recipes are set up the same way, maybe some of the emails are older format and wont need this treatment. I will fuss around more with open Office too, seems like that should be able to do this but my first tries didn't work.
Thank you!

You are so welcome!! Open Office is not going to help you. Sorry. It's a free "open-source" replacement set of apps (instead of paying $$) for Microsoft's Word, Excel, etc. No plain text program there. (It's fine if you are looking for a way to get MS like programs, but doesn't sound to me like you want those kinds of programs. I don't use them, for instance. For recipes, I stay in plain text. No hidden coding wanted when doing up recipes to save or put into my recipe programs, or to post online. I have no need for Word or Excel, etc. Some folks DO. I have friends who like working in tables in Excel, for instance. Or who put out newsletters and need fancy formatting features.) I love my program called NoteTab (not Notepad)...and most of my friends who prep recipes for Mastercook, etc programs use it because it has lots of stuff we need and some of our favorite recipe programs are programmed around it. (Meaning, were written (coded) using various aspects of Notetab's 'clip' feature. Long story.) We buy the fancier version of it (still cheap), but it also comes free and I highly recommend it to all. But, btw: while I was looking around, I downloaded and tried that one I mentioned - Nexpad. FREE. For Windows 10. It has built in VOICE TO TEXT... PLUS, the REVERSE - Text-to-Voice. In other words, you can dictate into it and it will type, or you can type and have it read back to you. (Or paste some text in and have it read that to you.) I have lots of friends who want one or both of those features and don't want to pay big bucks to get them. This is first time I've ever seen a text program come with those things. WAY WAY COOL. Plus, the maker has another free program that pulls text out of photos. SO, I am in pig heaven playing with those. Would never have found them without you. (Or would have taken much time to someday run across them. SO THANKS TO YOU!) Yes! I got it to print in Wordpad! its hard to clip off the extra spaces and not chop off words that need to be there. well yes, that's me. not paying for Word/Excel, etc. no need for them. this little program looks like it will work if EW doesn't come to their senses and fix the havoc they have wrought. the previous EW format was always annoyingly going to a second page for no reason, and not printing the nutritional values, which would have been a use for the second page. Thank you!
I am not interested in voice to text. very basic, words on paper so I can easily add notes if I want or toss if it isn't good, basic directions. Not complicated!. thank you again for all your efforts. I will be back to whine if I have troubles. DH is suffering thru the day, so we both get to suffer, and off to the procedure after an entire night of more awful solution ( 12:30 am is 32 ounces more) and urgent bathroom calls. Man, this procedure is way beyond what it used to be.

That's the norm now, all that liquid to drink. They stopped using pills (which weren't so bad...just monster sized). My girlfriend was just complaining on phone about having to be tested again and it's the amount of the stuff that she will have to drink that bothers her. (She has a previous test not all that long ago and she's dreading drinking so MUCH again -- said they give tall, big men same amount as little bitty lady. She can't see why. Bugs her.) For some reason, my husband didn't mind the amount at all (big tall guy).
SO, to me it sounds like you will be able to get by with just Wordpad, if it lets you edit down the junk and then print what remains.

Yes, I print and delete usually.
multiple ways to rinse out to the satisfaction of your gastroenterologist. the Golytely prep is the oldest. least palatable IMO. slightly slimy fishy tasting ginormous jug of liquid. been there, done that. Ugh. the newer ones use Miralax, the OTC laxative powder. Costco has larger bottles, called Laxacare. you need to measure the right number of grams. kitchen scale is the way. DH has had 5 procedures now. this time they wanted a low fiber diet 4-5 days ahead, then clear liquids day followed by 2 bottles of miralax, one at dinner time and an entire second one at 12:30 am for a 7 am procedure. so 2x as much as previously. Miralax is 238 gms of powder dissolved in a 32 oz of Gatorade. zero sleep last night. I got some, not a lot. I believe big people and little people still have similar dimensions to their colon, need the same amount of internal 'power wash". we are successfully done and back home while he sleeps off the drugs.
thanks again for coming up with a decent solution.

Traildoggie, I'm glad that both your DH and the printing are working out. I hope all is clean and b-9 for your DH.
Just as an aside, no, all people do not have the same dimensions (length) to their colons. My last colonoscopy here in WA, the doc was peeved (like it was my fault) that I had, as he put it, extra feet of intestine. That the colonoscopy took longer because of it. Interestingly, I have a friend in WI who also has extra feet of intestine.
Wonder if he and his doc discussed the Cologuard fecal test. It is not the old, old fecal occult test that they used to do; this is based on genetics/DNA. For some people, this test actually works better because a rare subset of people get cancer on their right side and that one is typically missed. If the Cologuard finds anything suspicious, the docs do extra careful colonoscopies and usually discover the right sided cancers. The Cologuard is supposed to be 92% efficient in detecting cancers and best of all, no prep. It is covered by insurance and if there are odd findings, insurance will pay for a follow up colonoscopy.
