so I didn't try this. I didn't notice these a few weeks ago. Jennie O frozen turkey with no defrosting, comes in an oven bag that you stick in a roasting pan without defrosting and its ready in 2 hours.
This idea sounds wrong but I did look at one and haven't decided if I should try. Has anyone tested this product? I read reviews and they seemed to be either 5* or 1*, almost like they were not reviews of the same product.

I'd try it if there were dark meat available. Haven't seen this in our stores out in the middle of nowhere, yet.

Wallycat, I didn't see these at thanksgiving a couple weeks ago, and it was the same store, QFC in Stanwood. not far across the pond from you. they had several versions, a boneless turkey roast type of thing, and I think turkey breasts on bone. not sure if the full size turkeys were the same format. I will look closer next visit.
not a carnivore, I do turkey once or twice a year , and the defrost time is so long! the thanksgiving bone in breast was in the frig for a week and was still frozen and ended up in the sink, no doubt spewing toxic / fatal bacteria everywhere. it would be nice to stick it directly in the oven if the end product is OK tasting. if no one has tried these, I might give it a go and be the guinea pig for once.

The Kitchen holiday special had alton brown discussing thawing....cold water submerge is faster and circulating water, even faster....but his bizarre DIY probably over my head. My biggest concern would be what ingredients were "added" to it. When DH and I feel like turkey, we get the hindquarter or just plain thigh. Easy to cook; not too much leftover and perfect for cooking ease. I'll have to check out QFC. There's one here and one in port hadlock. Thanks!

we don't like the same things... I didn't notice if turkey thighs were available. that's the part I wont eat, would toss if I bought a whole turkey. different strokes and all that... the other issue is gravy and without a whole turkey you don't get much to work with.
the Stanwood QFC is a big busy store. I don't know if they had this turkey "format" at thanksgiving and I didn't notice it, or if it's a new product. some reviews compared it to "cafeteria" chicken. some said way too salty. made me wonder about quality control in producing it. I think most turkeys have some liquid injected. I will say be cautious on cooking instructions. the breast I bought was done WAY before the suggested time. it was overdone at 15 min less than the minimum roasting time on the package.

Indeed, different strokes. I'll muddle through white meat but gravy, uh-uh-no-way, LOL. We stopped at the PT QFC after we finished at the range and I saw a lot of jennie-O but not the in-bag style you described. I'll keep checking though it sounds like the final product isn't a rave.

we enjoyed a second roast turkey breast, think it was Honeysuckle brand? might have been jenny-o. when I looked at QFC this week, all were gone. in fact all turkeys were gone except for the newer versions that are roasted in a bag without defrosting. there were whole turkeys and breasts. there was another brand besides jenny-o but don't remember the name. so DH wanted another, so got one for new years day, so I will report in a day or two on how the process went. I like turkey especially left over for soups and casserole dishes but I guess you must get it at thanksgiving to Christmas or they disappear.

I've had the Jennie-O turkey a number of times, it was my mom's favorite turkey to make due to the minimal effort involved and it was fool proof. It smells good when baking, tastes good, and it just the right size for a small group that does not care for meat on the bone or dark meat. I'm not sure I ever took a look at the ingredients but no one ever complained about it. They usually sold out pretty quickly in stores so when my mom found them she would buy a few.

I bought one and its going in the oven as we speak. the stores didn't have any of the "standard" frozen breasts, just these direct to oven kinds. I hope its good! thanks for the optimistic words. ETA ... it was pretty darn good! got done way sooner than it should have. about 2.5 hours. maybe there's variation in size? I'm surprised, it was good and so easy. I'm not big on gravy so skipped that. I would do this again. amazingly easier without the tedious defrost step that takes a week. had potatoes, roasted butternut squash, brussels sprouts , green salad... and it was dinner. I did not even need to wash the roasting pan! there is an envelope of "gravy" but I don't care for any gravy so I can't comment, I tossed it. it was saltier than I would make, but not unreasonable. there was a bit of liquid in the roasting bag after. would be messy if you don't notice it in time. we are doing a bathroom remodel right now so I needed something without a lot of hands-on time and this worked great. this was a boneless breast, not that big and would serve maybe 4-5 max. we are not big meat eaters here. its hard to judge because the package doesn't let you see how big it really is.

this worked nicely. when I went back to QFC they had a large number of "direct to oven" turkey products. I bought another one in case they aren't available all year.
