Yikes, I need some help and ideas! I will be visiting my sister for Thanksgiving (out of state) and her sister in law is hosting.
Everyone brings something. My sister is making stuffing.
I don't know their food likes.
I'm a basic cook so don't do pastry etc. No to cranberry.
I mentioned a salad but she was lukwarm (I know salad not always a thxgiving thing). I mentioned that Apple, Walnut, Dried Cherry in Maple Dressing.
Ironically I was thinking applecrisp which she said, good, but then said someone bringing desserts. So not sure what that means.
Many thanks!!

My suggestion if you will be traveling to get to your sister and you say she does not bake/basic cook, would be to bring a portable dessert like a bar cookie e.g. a pecan pie bar, pumpkin bar cookie, apple pie bar cookie etc... You get the idea. It would not be a technically difficult recipe, has the fall/Thanksgiving flavor vibes, would be easily transportable, and would not require oven/kitchen facilities when you get there. Other ideas....???an appetizer of some sort like a layered dip, roasted flavored nut mix, or some other finger type one bite item (quiche bite, spinach balls, brie cups, deviled egg etc..). Hope this helps. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing!

I'm sure there are similar recipes using different cheeses, etc.... Makes a nice appy or side dish/salad type offering.

Haha, I love that reply! Someone else is bringing dessert! Of course, because someone else is already bringing everything. Can you ask again? If there is a gap in the menu, would she tell you?
No to cranberry! My heart!
Like Karen, I went to appetizers: What about the Greek-layered hummus dip? Roasted, sugared nuts? A pumpkin cheeseball and crackers?
What about an arranged tray of roasted veggies? It doesn't have to be traditional and it should be something you feel comfortable making.
I cannot imagine that people would turn down some apple crisp either. Or what about a loaf of that applesauce oatmeal bread you like?

Will you be making your dish at your home and traveling with it or will you make it at your sister's home? If you're traveling with it are you driving or flying?

Agree with McGee... most things you'd have to buy locally after you get there, right? chances are best with appetizers but you still need to know if an oven will be available. my guess it would not. or refrigerator. How about a couple bottles of wine …. nuts, cheese, crackers, some fresh fruit, hummus. even those things will need a little prep, not easy in a motel room.

You could bake assorted nut breads at home (Banana-Nut, Apricot, Pumpkin, or Apple Strudel, etc.) and a Cream Cheese Spread. They travel really well, and actually improve if made ahead. They would be an addition -- not meant to replace dessert.

This is a good appetizer, put in middle of platter and surround with cut up apples and crackers...looks nice and tastes good... Pumpkin Cheese Ball INGREDIENTS 2 (8-ounce) blocks extra-sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 (8-ounce) container chive-and-onion cream cheese 2 teaspoons paprika 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper 1 broccoli stalk Red and green apple wedges or crackers Combine Cheddar cheese and next 4 ingredients in a bowl until blended. Cover and chill 4 hours or until mixture is firm enough to be shaped. (I used my hands to mix this up and then formed the pumpkin shape prior to putting in refrigerator) Shape mixture into a ball to resemble a pumpkin. Smooth entire outer surface with a frosting spatula or table knife. Make vertical grooves in ball, if desired, using fingertips. Cut florets from broccoli stalk, and reserve for another use. Cut stalk to resemble a pumpkin stem, and press into top of cheese ball. Serve cheese ball with apple wedges. Note: To make ahead, wrap cheese ball in plastic wrap without stalk, and store in refrigerator up to 2 days. Attach stalk before serving. YIELD: Makes 16 appetizer servings PREPARATION TIME: 30 min. COOKING TIME: Chill: 4 hrs.

Since you're going to be flying in, I think something like sugared or spiced nuts is a good idea--easily made ahead and transportable, and you won't have to worry about potentially competing with someone else's time in the kitchen.
