I think I make good food choices for my main meals, but my snacks (especially when I want more of sweet in the evening) could use some improvement. I want to cut back on the sugar (but I'm ok with having some, just not as frequent). And I need more variety in what I eat in general.
In the summer, simple.... love summer fruit, not even tempted by cookies, chocolate etc.
I'll munch on veggies. sometimes some nuts. I need to ban chocolate kisses or those mini Dove chocolates since I'm not one of those, oh I'll just have one or two. Let's see how long that lasts. I often eat when stressed, so a big bag of chocolate is very tempting. I might bake some banana bread to freeze (I think I have a recipe that uses all oats that I liked). Hummus is a go to. Sometimes a Kind Bar. I should get some popcorn to pop but I don't want the microwave bags. Seltzer with lemon or a big ol' glass of ice water does the trick .. since sometimes you are just thirsty not really hungry.
My new thing is to sometimes have an apple with this powdered PB/chocolate(for a bit of a chocolate fix) that I got on Vitacost. Loving it. 3 g sugar. 1 g fat. Just peanuts, cocoa, sugar. It was an impulse buy, had great reviews, and I needed a few more dollars on my order. I do tend to just grab an apple. but sometimes I want a bit of choc.
So what are your go to snacks? Do you eat between meals? Something after dinner, or are you done for the night? Sweet? Savory?
Thanks.

I try not to snack but that isn't always possible, especially if my meals are smaller. I occasionally cave in to a cookie or a slice of pie, but that is very rare. When I snack, I try to make it somehow beneficial and easy. If I crave salty, I love red pepper slices spritzed with vinegar and salt. ANy veggie will do. I've kept artichoke hearts (costco's big jars) in the fridge for quick and simple snacks. Cheese is also a favorite. Costco (do we see a pattern here?) is selling dehydrated beet slices that are sort of sweet and sort of savory. My new sweet snacks...do not laugh...are prunes. Prunes increase bone density so I try to get 4 prunes in a day (much more and I'd not be able to leave the house, LOL). Costco also sells dried mangos with no added sugar that are very tasty. If I want to actually "make" something, I make popcorn. Whole grain, simple and you can season with plain salt or spices of your choosing..even cinnamon/small amount of sugar to make fake kettle corn and get a sweet hit, if that's what you're craving. And last but not least...I get the individual servings of Kirkland hummus.

I tend to snack but not as much as I used to when I was younger. I think for me it is a habit that started as a kid. I was thin and my parents were always trying to get me to "eat something!" To this day, I have a snack before I go to bed and I know most of the time this is out of habit and not true hunger. I accept that and will continue to have my "evening constitutional" as DH calls it until the day (if it ever happens) that weight becomes an issue. Knock wood....still don't have any problems there. Anyway, when I was younger, pregnant or nursing, I snacked constantly. Now I'd say aside from 3 square meals, I have one mid afternoon snack most days, a treat after dinner, and something before I go to bed. In the afternoon, 9 times out of 10, it is usually some sort of fruit that is in season. After dinner, I like a little sweet. I usually have a small scoop of frozen yogurt/ice cream and one small cookie or sometimes a fudge bar of some sort. It's often a homemade cookie (oatmeal raisin are favorites) but the 2 store bought ones I can't resist are oreos and mallomars!! And before bed, an apple with milk and sometimes if i really am hungry, a homemade energy bar/bite. But I do wake up every morning and swim at 5 am before breakfast, so my rationale is my evening snack helps fuel my swim until I get home for breakfast (likely not but hey.....a girl can try!!!!)

WC -- Thx for the ideas. I've been meaning to get some popcorn since that is way better for me than lots of the things i might pick
Karen -- I got distracted when you said mallomars. That was my favorite cookie as a kid and I I haven't had them since I was young, no clue why. I must have had a million of those growing up. Did you grow up in the northeast --- I once read that practically all of the mallomars are sold in the northeast. I would sometimes melt the chocolate and toast the marshmallow a bit over the stove. The other cookie of choice was Sugar Wafers. Not saying I would turn down an oreo.
I do think sometimes I snack out of habit. The key for me is to really limit the trigger foods for me -- since those are gone in record time. Stress is the biggie for me.
Right now I'm having a peach! I'm not always that virtuous. I love fruit but sometimes I get my fill of "boring" winter fruit. Now if I could have cherries and plums year round.....
Thx,

Applecrisp-Ha ha, too funny that I got your attention with mallomars. It is actually an interesting story. I hated/despised mallomars as a kid (not much of a sweet tooth as a kid nor a chocolate fan at all until I became pregnant and chocolate was one of my first cravings!). Anyway, my dad absolutely LOVED mallomars (he was a cookie junkie). I grew up in the midwest but moved to the Northeast as an adult. Every time I went home to visit my parents, I would bring my dad a big supply of mallomars since he could not get them there, but I never touched them myself. Well, about a year after his death, I see the box of mallomars in the store and decide to buy a box in his memory even if I only ate one and threw the rest out or gave it away. Well....um....the rest is history . I guess I inherited my love for cookies from him because aside from cookies and ice cream, i don't touch any of it....pies, cakes etc.... Just not a fan. Dh used to joke with me because I would take the one bite of a new cake or pie recipe and then he'd say to me "suppose now I have to finish the rest" and the answer was usually "yes." Karen

Karen Karen -- Thanks for sharing such a sweet story on your love for Mallomars. And all those years that you thought you weren't a fan. See now you are keeping that mallomar tradition going!
