My answer, especially for the last few months, is ... too often. I seem to just pop into a store since I'm in the area, and going in for just greek yogurt often turns into some fruit, feta whatever. It takes time and all this shopping is a good chunk of money so I'm going to try to cut back. Again. Can someone say pantry challenge coming up. : ) It isn't real warm yet, but waiting for the train, with groceries, on a super hot day --- that is some incentive to not shop right there!
But at the same time, sometimes I may go for more than a week or more without shopping. Clearly no consistent plan.
So I'm going to try to keep out for the rest of the month, other than for veggies and and milk.
How often do you go shopping? Do you shop at primarily one store? Do you typically get the groceries yourself, sometimes get it delivered (ie Instacart, Peapod etc), or use one of those pick up at the store options, order online? And do you track or have a good idea how much you spend each month (for me I try to track, but I know I don't include all things, uh, like the Vitacost order I got last week and ...)

For me, it varies a lot. I have a main grocery store in town; I also shop at the local farmers' market, Costco, Shop-Rite (best prices but not close), stores with specialty items (Kings, Whole Foods), and I sometimes do a grocery run on my work lunch hour. I probably hit a store twice a week.

What BarbaraL said. Costco is usually once/month. I check the circulars and go to local stores (LOL, we only have 2) if something is a fabulous sale. I usually go once/week to the local co-op/health food store for stuff. Our farmer's markets (we have one on sat and wed) are so high priced that I laugh when I read people should "buy locally" and farmer's markets are the best place to shop. NOT here. There is a grass-fed meat guy every other week and I used to go there when we did not have venison. Otherwise, I try to stock up so I could, in theory, skip a week or two and still have plenty to choose from.

apecrisp, I couldn't agree with you more when it comes to picking up extra items in the grocery store. It's so easy even with a logically written list following the layout of the store. Just yesterday a quick run to our local grocer resulted in an excessive cost at the check-out counter. My only excuse would be the weather. With all the storms popping up here you're not sure when your next shopping trip will occur. We have no grocery store within walking distance any more. What we once had closed down and was replaced by a Big Lots = no milk. When I have my act together, about 50% of the time, I write a menu for 7-10 days, take inventory of pantry/fridge/freezer and write a long, long list. That can keep my grocery shopping to once a week - by car and often a 30 minute drive each way. Any fragile groceries like fresh fish or lettuce need to be on the menu within a day or two. Still, like wallycat, I tend to stock up depending on the circumstances. We once lived where snowstorms might close the roads.

It depends on the type of products I am going to buy. If it is anything like vegetables that are necessary to touch anywhere outside, surely, it is necessary to go to the market. But if it is anything like fish, caviar, any other delicacy, it is better to buy from the reliable supplier that you are sure in (like Fishandcaviar). My main concern is connected to the necessity of many standards keeping. And it is rather simple to destroy the reputation of such online shops.
