I'm always looking to make more eco friendly choices in my house. I do the the typical ones like .... use cloth napkins for years (and I really don't get why this is not more common, so easy, just toss in regular laundry .. and hey if you want use paper sometimes you are still way ahead). I try to use dish towels, rags etc instead of paper towel but I can absolutely be better about this! Store leftovers in containers with lids so no plastic wrap etc. Soups/sauces etc in the freezer go in Pyrex or tupperware type instead of plastic bags. I bring my reusable shopping and produce bags (for the bulk bins too) when shopping.
But, I'm trying to work on my cleaning supplies. I mainly use: Method multi-purpose cleaner, vInegar/water in a spray bottle, and I do have one bottle of a "regular" multi purpose cleaner if I want something stronger. But that is still lots of plastic when I toss the empty bottles in recycling. Using a concentrate that I mix up might be the way to go. Or use a cleaner that sells refills. I've never used Dr Bronners. Do you have a favorite go-to cleaners?
And then there is laundry soap. And that big ol' plastic container into recycling. Again I need to look into brands that are more concentrated etc (and of course there are some brands that have more eco friendly ingredients too). Are the tabs a better choice? Powder? Do you have a favorite brand?
I use very few plastic storage bags, however sometimes I might use one to freeze bread, wrapped portions of chicken for freezing etc, and I try to reuse many times (just label the bag that I had wrapped chicken). So not top focus for me right now but has anyone used Stasher brand silicone bags or something similar? Any recommendations for more eco friendly storage bag?
Garbage bags. I need to look into. I've only bought garbage bags a few times and just use the plastic bags from CVS, when I get my groceries delivered, and reuse random shipping bags from packages etc (I'm like McGuver). It is harder to get plastic since not allowed in some areas near me -- which is great so I need to look into choices and my stash will dwindle I did find a reusable/washable trash bag but that wouldn't work for my trash since I have to throw my garbage in a bag, down the incinerator --- but I think it could work great for a small recycling bin or for not super messy trash like an office etc. www.planetwiseinc.com/planet-wise-reusable-trash-bag.html Plastic bags made of recycled material?
And don't start with the bottles of shampoo, conditioner, hair products. And ......
I know there are certainly other things I can do around my home that are more eco friendly and better ingredients too, so I will continue to review and change some things. I am a big believer that it all adds up. If we all make changes, every bit helps!
Any favorite eco friendly products/tips? Anything you'd like to change up? Or have a hard time making a more eco friendly swap?
