Desperate to buy new King Size bed - recommendations? (977 views)

Moving and need new bed. Had issues with last bed...even though it was expensive. Instant indentations, valleys and hills (even though it was a very firm mattress).
Anybody LOVE their king-size (or any size) bed? I don't know where to begin looking.
I would like (but doubt we will find) one that can tilt up at the head of bed.
Do Temperpedics get hot?
BTW: We put Sleep Number in our motor home and I don't love it.
THANKS!

We have always had queen sized beds but DH thrashes and I am a light sleeper. Last year, DH built slats (twin-xl sized) and we pushed them together and got 2 twin-xl mattresses. It looks very much like the new motorized beds in terms of appearance and size (makes it king sized when pushed together). I use a king sized fitted sheet and no one would guess there are two mattresses. SO much easier to move, flip, make up, etc...and notice so much less movement on the other side. I wanted to recommend the one we got, but it isn't a wow. I just read a review and I think Costco came up number 2. I'll go dig for the info and post back here if I locate it.

I am considering a new king also...seriously considering Nectar, a mattress by mail...it has a 365 day return guarantee, and a great warranty. I figure I can give it a good trial run...check out their website...everything I read sounds very convincing...I probably wouldn’t have even considered them but a good friend has been sleeping on hers for over 6 months and loves it...

Did you buy it yet? I am hearing so many good reports about beds bought online. I haven't done anything yet. Looking into Parklane (stores), heard they are great. However, I think they are under new ownership (Bed Mart?) and have different manufacturer. Called and they tell me $275 to them if we return top of bed, $100 if return platform. Yikes. I ordered it and haven’t received confirmation that it has shipped...in the meantime I have had another friend order a Purple mattress at the recommendation of another friend. I had considered them but they were more expensive and had less of a return guarantee...both Nectar and Purple have very positive reviews...will post after I receive it and get it set up...

Thanks so much Wallycat! I am just now finding the time to really sit down and read through these links you have shared! Time has been flying! We are moving, buying house, selling current house, now looks like daughter is buying it...chaos abounds. We get the new place end of next week and bed shopping will start in earnest sometime then. (We think we'll paint, remove carpet in bedroom there, so bed may be last thing we do on the long chain of things to do.) I appreciate your input! And I love the idea of getting two part bed (to link together). That's been one of my wants -- dreaming about the ease of moving it in, cleaning around it, etc. Catbatty We have always had queen sized beds but DH thrashes and I am a light sleeper. We have a king with a pillowtop. I can't sleep on it for more than a few hours. the pillowtop retains heat, a deal killer for me. it is an expensive Beautyrest. I sleep in guest room on an ancient mattress that doesn't over heat. when time comes I'll replace it with another queen in the approx. $1000 range. in warm weather, DH doesn't like the pillowtop either due to over heating. I would never ever buy another pillowtop. or memoryfoam. Yuck. gross feeling.
I tried using the recommendations from CR last time we looked for mattresses and didn't find they helped. all were newer model #s, never matched what was in the stores. the expensive features were things that didn't work for me, so I'm a cheap date. we get along better when I sleep in our guest room. as we got older we both have sleep problems. separate mattresses same room is fine too.
another thing was the box spring. some mattresses are very VERY tall to begin with, and with a tall box spring I would need a step stool to get up and down. I'm about 5'2" so low end of average height range. be sure to watch the total height is workable for you, and get a small profile box spring . another potential problem is the mattress protector they will try to sell you. some of them are extremely warm. a lot of the mattress info last year mentioned coolness technology so I am not the only one who found newer mattresses WAY too warm

Hello there, I faced that same thing when I changed my home, mattress is the main thing in your home, I faced back pain problem because of mattress, and my doctor suggested me to change my mattress, so I recently changed it, and bought king-size mattress through Brooklyn Bedding coupons, and I love it.

We bought two long twins. (TwinXL.) From Tuft & Needle. (We bought The Mint version.) It's been almost two years since we moved and bought them. We LOVE them! Zero back pain while in bed, since buying them. Easy to clean under because it's two beds. (Light weight makes them easy to move and separate...but sturdy and they sit close together so we notice no gap.) We began with sheets fitted for them, each beds own. Recently however, we found our favorite king sheets fit it and using those are so much easier to make bed. (And like Wallycat mentioned above, you can't tell it's two beds when they are side-by-side.) We feel NO MOTION when the other person gets in or out of their side. So, I'm so happy to say that we have no regrets about ordering them. Best bed we've had in years and I have had back problems for years. Beds, some of them, have been excruciating for me. Sleep well all.

Hi all, Regarding mattresses that get hot: Tuft & Needle say their beds don't--Consumer Reports says not entirely true. (Least, that's where I think I read that. It also ranked mine (Tuft & needle's The Mint) as one of the top bed choices overall.) In my own experience, sometimes I've noticed some heat in mine. I'm not sure if the reason is: I over-pile it with comforters and blankets when I first get in and then later in the night, it's too hot. I push them off and the mattress feels hot until some time passes. (Or perhaps I don't notice because I'm back asleep--nothing keeps me awake. I can go to the bathroom, come back and am out immediately.) SO, all this leads me to a thought! Back when I was going through menopause and got SO hot at night, I bought one of those little cooling mats...NOT the kind you lay on, but just a small mat that you place hand, arm, or elbow...or whatever on. I learned that just having SOME PART of your body cold like that brings down the hot. WORKED LIKE MAGIC FOR ME. (i'VE NOW PASSED MINE ON TO MY DAUGHTER.) At the time I bought it, it was fairly expensive. But nowadays, I have seen similar thing at PET SUPPLY STORES. I will bet you donuts that those of you who get overheated at night will be helped by one of these cooling pads. I was SO happy with mine.

Catbatty, We just recently bought a king size nesco mattress. Dreamworks. It IS all memory foam, but one thing I notice is I don't feel my DH tossing and turning. When he does reposition..I don't feel it at all. I've always had a Sealy or Serta mattress so it is a little changeup.
Heat~yes...I have noticed they are warmer.~Something I had never thought of~but I'm a coldbaby. I use a heated blanket through the winter because our bedroom is the coldest room in the house.

Any comments on the purple mattress? I'm eyeing it up. We ordered an organic, "green" and supposedly decent company for our twin-xl but after 5 years, DH's mattress is buckling (he is not heavy; more underweight than anything) and the company "My Green Mattress" refuses to stand by their warranty. Sure, they'll sell us another mattress at a discount. I told them I don't trust them anymore and would never buy from them again. If they lie once...blah, blah.

I am still really happy with our king size (two TwinXL pushed together) from Tuft & Needle. Can't say enough good about em. My sleep has never been better. Zero places that sag or lump. REALLY comfortable. Both of us are super happy with them. GOOD LUCK, WALLYCAT.

Not sure. Doubt it. Their MINT version is what we got back when and I read a few months back that of the T & N mattresses, this was rated the highest. I'd sure hated to influence you and be wrong. I hope you research it.

I checked with my friend who bought a purple mattress 3 years ago...she said she and her husband love it. Said they really feel the difference after traveling and sleeping on other beds. She said she thinks it’s a dream 2 model and has a pillow top, it’s not super soft...

Wallycat, are you seeing any shortages in terms of choices or supply? A store here is talking about a foam crisis, but that's the only place I've heard of it. We have been thinking about a new mattress for a while, but our lab slept on our bed and we decided it made more sense to wait until she was no longer with us. We lost her at the end of May and the Covid spike started in late May-June here. We haven't done any shopping, but I'm starting to think about it.

I've complained about this before, but here goes again. we have a beautyrest king pillow top. I hate it. have not spent a whole night on it. the pillowtop holds heat like nothing else. since we got the mattress however, DH decided he needs the head of the bed elevated for reflux symptoms. strike #2. I cant sleep like that. so I use the guest room. the King though is so heavy I can't change the sheets. the sheets don't stay on the mattress and need to be clipped in place.
if I had to do it over again, and maybe that will happen... I would go the two twins route. he could elevate his side, I could leave mine flat. the mattress would not weigh as much as a loaded semi. I could wash sheets without getting a committee together. elevating the head of the bed involves stacked landscape bricks underneath the frame because it's ridiculously heavy. washing the sheets requires pre planning... twins would be much better.

Beth, in terms of general shortages, yes, particularly CAT FOOD, of all things!! I went to walmart a few weeks ago (our monthly run to Sequim to go to walmart and costco--there are no big box stores except a mcDonalds out here in our town) and the shelves for coffee were empty. Also the pet food.
Traildoggie, DH snores and thrashes around so I finally (5 or so years ago) suggested the two twin set up. It is a dream. We used to have a queen, so this is (two twin together) king sized, and feels super roomy. His thrashing is less noticeable and I can keep king sheets for the fitted which makes it all look like one mattress ---not that anyone cares or is checking, LOL.
The "My Green Mattress" place was offering latex free, flippable (so easy to flip a twinxl)with organic stuffing, wool, cotton, blah, blah...sadly, their 10 year warranty is fake and they refuse to honor it, even with all the pictures I provided. They tried to "slip me up" with asking about platform beds, slat sizes, etc. and we passed it all so they simply said too bad. So many mattresses out there have latex and/or foam. I think foam would be super hot and unpleasant which is why I asked about the Purple mattress. It is supposed to be gel-like so it never completely conforms and dents and possibly sleeps cooler. But I simply don't know. I was watching a special on the Japanese channel showing artisan products, like a futon (a real futon, not the americanized versions) and it made me want to throw everything out and get that, LOL.
